It's a harsh somber and heartbreaking reality and savage one for the innocent creatures born into this what should be a utopia for them. I honestly I am a meat eater I humbly admit that as a honest man and I make my only apologies to the dear lives who were solely born and only knew suffering and a existence that was for the sole purpose to be minimally catered to and poked prodded branded and tagged to reach culling/slaughter age or weight all for the almighty fucking dollar and consumption. Those precious creatures I dearly apologize to and I'm grateful to their sacrifice so I could have meals I state that for any vegan freak outraged by my comment and feeling the urge to call me a hypocrite or question my heart and the sadness my heart deeply feels for these creatures. That said the animals that are these days primarily since the dawn of industries and mass production corporations they were before this period was dear animals that were cared for and raised on ranches and small family farms to be a sacrifice to feed the family some were used for labor tasks in daily tasks to get by in life but these animals were meaningful and valued part of a family. Now the shit corporations do is absolutely not the natural order for the lives of animals like pigs chickens and sadly horses to it really tears me up to know a innocent animal is born into a savage ass world not a clue to the horror they are in store for bundled into cold and metal and concrete places with numerous others like themselves and if they are fortunate they in facilities with humans or policies that require the humans to treat them with dignity which actually their treatment is for the sake of humans in the end as well stress produces toxins to taint the meat but if they are lucky they aren't brutally mistreated. The rest suffer from birth to slaughter that enrages me to unreal levels it's the very best humane thing a human can give to these animals is a bit of kindness and care these animals like the female breeder animals I feel are done the harshest like sows they are artificially inseminated by guess what humans with a damn device then forced all around stall to stall then to a fucked up farrowing crate that for most is so small the sows can't even really stand and at least savor the very little bit of precious moments with their babies instead they get shocked or beaten to be forced to stand once a day due to them becoming lame fear of losing that fucking money uhh. They as well sadly and can't at all help it crush and kill their piglets some suffer for minutes trying to squeal while suffocating under their 600 pound mother and the sow sadly knows they are crushing them but can't even stand actually or do a damn thing for their babies either then soon humans the great animals they are right come snatching their piglets seen people sick fucks yanking piglets up by ears legs wherever they grab them it don't matter but they toss them some toss piglets several feet across the air to carts some smack the metal stalls or hit the concrete and sadly some are gravely injured and most are tossed into a dark corner or into the farrowing pen by their mother to slowly die and fucking rot while most of the sows know it and actually cry tears at the fading whimpers and cries of their piglets. Then they are soon forced back to the insemination stalls for another wonderful fucked up pregnancy the vicious cycle repeats several times for sows most end up with horrific prolapses where they have a huge cyst like growth protruding frim the vagina that I know is unbearable and gotta do all the other wonderful shit i said along with it to eventually once they can no longer birth pigs anymore get painted with cull or kill on them and most cant even walk to their slaughter and are beaten viciously simply cause they are just drained of life they are dragged beat and some forklifted to slaughter. The boars fuck a thing that looks like a warhorse while a jackass pervert is there to collect the cum for insemination if it's one thing these places could do is allow the boars and sows to do is let them naturally get it on ya know enjoy what we humans so greatly enjoy that being sex that should be done damnit. These animals deserve to at least be allowed to live a typical farm like environment fed properly and sheltered cared for treated with compassion and allowed to live some life before being butchered for food mass high speed unreal cruel slaughter is sick as fuck honestly and it's something that breaks my heart.

We need to get a handle on the overbreeding. That’s a big contributor to the slaughtering of horses. Backyard breeders breeding horses that are such a conformational wreck they won’t live comfortably past 8 years old. I don’t disagree with harvesting animals for food either but the way animals are raised and killed by mass producers is sickening. We can do better but people that think the meat industry is ok the way it is are a big problem. I don’t eat any meat from the grocery store. I harvest meat myself (venison) or go to local farms when I can see the conditions and how the animals are living.

People are design to eat meat with veg. Our whole system is designed to do that unlike say a cat who is strictly a meat eater. There are no study finding we are strictly herbivores. Infact people eating solely plant food have to supplement their diets daily because they can not get everything form just plants. I can prove new and old medical case studys about this. If you like me source it.
Now with that out of the way. I do believe we should eat local ethically raised or grown food. I personally raise rabbits and quail for my meat. I buy local lamb in the fall form local farm. That Ive been too. None my meat is treated badly like this document showing.
Biggest problem isn't people who are buying horse meat. It's the back yard breeder. Thoroughbred alone each year are having over 200,000 register foal born. Now include quarter horse, paints, drafts, Arabians, grades....list goes on.
Problem is what we do with all unwanted horses now and all the once being bred every year?

There's a reason the racing industry wasn't mentioned, because it has made strides in decreasing the numbers of horses bred every year, programs to ensure the horses have a good retirement. The racing industry has actually taken the initiative to make a change. It's the American Quarter Horse that is the number one horse sent to slaughter, most from backyard breeders who have no business breeding horses. It's easy and lazy to attack an entire industry while ignoring the real problem. The racing industry is not perfect, there is plenty of room for improvement, but I have seen far, far more improvement in animal welfare from the racing industry than any other horse related industry.

People can eat horses. Its fine, there's nothing special about them beyond what an individual thinks of them in particular, same as any other pet. But slaughter needs to be done humanely, increase regulation and create a formal market for it so it can be regulated by the USDA. "Wild" horses are not wild, they are feral livestock. They are not a native species and she not be coveted to the same degree as bison, antelope and other truly native wildlife. The survival of an invasive species should not be made a priority. In that respect, cattle should not be given priority over native wildlife either. Cultural icon or not (I noticed we aren't going to address all the oxen that played just as important a roll in United States history) horses were eaten in times of hardship back in the days of old, just like when this documentary was filmed. Horses weren't sacred in US history, they were valuable, but certainly not sacred. You think if a horse became lame back then we just nursed it in a pasture doing nothing for the rest of its life? There's a whole lot of skeletons in the desert the say otherwise.

There's a reason you're watching a sob story "documentary" on youtube, rather than working at the BLM or in the USDA to find a solutions. Horses can be food if people want to eat them. There is no moral dilema there. Not knowing how long a substance remains in the system does not automatically make that meat unsafe to consume. Pregnant women aren't allowed to eat many types of fish because of the natural mercury content, but its safe for regular adults to eat. There's this thing called dosages. And safety of horse meat can easily be resolved with proper screening.

is strewn with the bones of the horse.
That said...and I have had horses all my life...I am a horse lover..I do not care to eat horse meat...HOWEVER...it is not our place to deny it to those who want to eat it.
Iceland eats horses, France eats horses, China and Japan eat horses. I'd rather see the meat go to use than waste.
The biggest mistake we have made in this country..was to ban the horse slaughter trade.
WHY? Because we could control and police the method if we cared to.
The fact is..there are too many horses and not enough homes for them.
Same goes for dogs and cats...many of which die terrible deaths from
carbon dioxide gassing. The fortunate ones get a needle.
I TRULY wish all those who complain would educate themselves on this subject.
In Nevada..many wild horses just starve to death or die of thirst.
I have saved all I could..over 15 head..but the truth is, most Americans with bleeding hearts over this cannot afford a horse or a single vet bill it may bring.

"Wherever man has left his footprint in the long ascent from barbarism to civilization, we find the hoofprint of the horse beside it." John Moore (1858-1929)
There are animals that humans domesticated for sustenance, clothing and durable goods like cows, pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, etc.; and there are those that were domesticated as entertaining and beloved companions and work helpers such as dogs, cats, canaries, parakeets etc. & horses, that should be classified as animal companions and NEVER as livestock which permits them to be sold for slaughter for their meat, as horses are now classified.
The breeding of horses (and dogs & cats) needs to be more tightly controlled so there aren't such excesses in their numbers that they can't be individually cared for and are therefore vulnerable to death in shelters (dogs & cats) or in meat markets (horses).
The ancestors of these horses literally helped to establish, tame and build nations, including ours. We could not have done it without them! We owe them better as a species than to be mistreated and/or eaten!

If you have a fenced pasture & water/pond/creek in said pasture thats all the horse needs along with trimming it's hooves if it cant do that natrault you don't need everything they're saying they make it so costly to own horses you need this and blah in this and blah blah blah blah blah blah blah but you don't need all that you just need water and fenced pasture and you need to trim their Hooves if they don't naturally trim them themselves

"do you pay for your electric bill or pay to board your horse?" This is why people shouldnt be breeding animals in the first place. most domestic animals are in situations where they need humans to survive, its unfair to put your needs above theirs, and then also handicap them to where they cant take care of themselves. And yea this is a problem ancient humans created, but we can stop it by not breed them anymore or be more selfless.

    • @CHLOCHLOLP

@Carrie Kelly the problem is they arent being looked after always. People will 99% of the time put their needs before their pets. If people loved their pets like children and truly cared for them like that it would be one thing but many dont. And Im not trying to come for anyone really, i have pets too, but im just saying if we are talking on a real moral level we dont treat them with the respect they deserve.
