    Absolutely brilliant video. I am a low handicap golfer, but have always struggled with chipping. Watched this and realised that I was killing my game around the greens with the hands forward and downward strike you mention. Have put these changes into play the last few rounds and cannot believe the difference. Worth 2 or 3 shots a round to me this! Now my chipping may finally match the rest of my game and help my mission to reach scratch! Thanks a lot and keep up the great work!

      @@USGOLFTVshow Question though. Can you just keep the clubface square and still get effective forgiveness from the bounce on chips? Or do you suggest opening the face to expose more bounce?

    • @USGOLFTVshow
      @USGOLFTVshow  Před 4 lety

      Michael Ricciardelli keeping the face square works well. Our suggestion is to open the face up slightly at address and keep it the same throughout the motion...

      Watch the Lee Trevino video about chipping , he talks about the handle (butt) of the club should always be ahead of the club at impact, not saying this lesson is wrong just watch his video..He talks about drinking a case of Coors light when winning a tournament. Thats the wright video.

    This is the best chipping instruction I have ever had. All of the mistakes I made were related to those 3 mistakes that person after person has given me. I didn’t even have a chance to practice this technique before I played the next day. I used all three instruction points during that game and never missed a chip. Everything went up onto the green. I thought I would never figure out chipping. It was killing my game. I feel so great since I learned to chip I want to play all of the tip and feel confident that I will never chip again and see the ball got 2 feet in front of me! Thank you so much!!!

      Great teaching, one observation all teachers forget on chipping is to make a wide arc, back and through the ball. Yes neutral shaft and bounce, but if you pick it up, that’s a soggy chip or knife coming

    Todd, thank you for a most enlightening lesson. I have always played the ball way back in my stance with the club leaning forward, and now I know why my wedge has the loft of a 4 iron! I tried your advice on all my iron shots yesterday, not just chips, and got an immediate improvement in loft and direction. I hit a 9 iron from 115 out that actually went straight up in the air and landed 8' from the pin, then in for a birdie. What a game-changer!! Thanks again!

    I have been a trainer in other fields, not golf. I have always had a saying which is: "Training that does no produce a change is about as good as a parachute that works on the 2nd bounce. For me, a regular joe amateur golfer, this is the best chip shot guidance I have ever seen/heard. I watched the video, went out in the back yard and practiced the methods and techniques taught. I have played twice since then and both times reduced my score by about 8 to 10 strokes. Without question, my shots around the green were more controlled, more accurate, and closer to the cup than in the past. I know it is likely I will still chunk from time-to-time. But, I truly believe this skill set will remain overall a game changer for me. Thank you so much for making golf more fun for me & of course, lower scores. Best Regards.

      I agree 100%. I've been studying the golf swing my entire teen & adult life, 20+ years and this is the best instruction on this topic that I've ever come acrossed. The way explains bounce and delofting is brilliant. I know a lot of the tips that come from tour Players, too often approach the subject as if their audience has the luxury of practicing and hitting hundreds of shots a day. So they often teach the hands forward/delofting method. He's the first instructor I've seen explaine how that gives less room for error, and how and why 99% of us should use bounce and loft to our advantage! It's succinct and simple, yet brilliant!

    Great tips, tried them out this evening and got so much better results now I'm no longer doing the things I'd previously been taught. I'd always played the ball back in stance in an effort to hit down on the ball. For the first time I can remember, I wasn't afraid of having to chip, usually I'd be putting wherever possible, even through rough!

    That short chip shot you said to move your hands back as you take the clubhead back ... is actually like a putting stroke , and works well for me . 👍 longer pitch shot are no different as long as you use the bounce , and follow through at the target. It's simple, easy to repeat and effective 👌

    Excellent lesson. Golf club heads are made for a reason - to put the ball in the air at specific angles. Delofting a wedge is counter-productive and self-defeating. Let the golf club head do its job!

    I believe there is a significant difference between chipping and pitching.
    The best chipping key I've found in my 55 yrs of golfing is to get the ball rolling on the green as soon as possible. If edge of green is 1/3 the total distance to the hole 8 iron, if edge of green is 1/2 of the way to hole W, and if edge of green is 2/3 of the way to hole Gap/SW.

    Wow! I am a casual golfer that struggles with chipping. I always thought that I just needed practice to hone this shot but don't golf enough to do that. The comment about, "If you make those 3 mistakes", and I had all those habits, that you are, "Going to need a lot of practice," really resonated with me. I can't wait to square everything back up, take those mistakes out of my game and try the motion tip out! I can get around the green or on the green in regulation. However I almost always walk away with a bogey, or double bogey, chasing the ball all over the place. Well done!

    Another well deserved thank-you! I have struggled with chipping for years, and had been progressively placing the ball back further in my stance. I had even switched to using my 56 degree wedge a couple of years ago to unconciously compensate for that ball placement. Oh my, what a difference following your advice. I just took chipping lessons from a LPGA teaching professional. She told me to do exactly what your three mistakes are. So I'm going to try your way!!! 20 years ago on the very fist time I ever played golf, I hit the ground so hard, I tore the cartilage off my rib cage. Didn't touch a club for 20 years! Finally decided to try again 2 years ago. So the hitting down on the ball is difficult for me to do. I really like the term descending. I think that will help me a lot. Great video!

    I find that the thought of moving the handle really helps as it assists me in making better contact with the ball and not 'flipping' at with my hands. If I move the club head first, I have a habit of using my wrists and hands too much resulting in inconsistent ball contact. Great explanation of the chipping process.

I fell into the "hit down on the ball" mistake with my irons and wedges for over 15 years! and it's a problem for a lot of us that were either incorrectly taught, or misunderstood the concept because of the flawed wording. The "Descending, down and thru" is a game changing concept. Pepe, your comment about the type of turf is a good one. Different turf conditions will make bounce your enemy or your friend depending on the situation. The knowledge to understand how we as golfers can change the loft and bounce of the club is vital in these situations. Thanks for watching and the comment. Hope the info helps!

    • @speakeezie
      @speakeezie Před 7 lety +1

      Got to disagree there. Hard to middling ground is just when you can use the bounce but obviously one has to hit the turf a fraction before the ball with the descending stroke. Wet or soggy conditions are trickier because the club head doesn't bounce. It digs into the turf. In those conditions a different technique may be necessary!

    Yep This works !!!! I've been doing this already and in effect it is a movement using the shoulders in a fixed pendulum motion. The shoulders rather than the hands ( most people I see get too handsy) that are making the shot in a single plane and it's more accurate in every way. It's the same as when I putt I use the shoulders and never break the hands there, this results in a secure pendulum , my feet are always in line with the hips and no more.

    Good video. I have subscribed and will take a look at some of your others. Last year I took some lessons from a pro here in Las Vegas and he covered chipping in one of them. He told me he was going to tell me his secrets of chipping and taught me to move the ball back to the right toe and to put my hands in front of my left knee. With this method a sand wedge had the loft of a seven iron. I think your method will be a little easier for me to use. It's so much more natural. On another note, on chipping, and I'll look for your video on that part of the game, I was taught ever so many years ago to get the ball on the ground and rolling towards the hole as quickly as possible. Now I see some professionals, especially the ladies, carry the ball almost to the hole with a shot that lands softly and has little roll. But I guess it's a golfer's personal preference. Take care.

    Todd, I really enjoyed your chipping video. The mistake that I see a lot of my amateur friends make is stopping their hands, creating a situation where the club head passes the hands and causes the leading edge of the club to hit the ball instead of the face of the club. A bladed chip is one of the reasons a lot of amateurs forward press their wedges. They haven't learned the skill of having their hands lead, or arrive at, the ball, at the same time as the club head. Once they understand your fundamentals they're going to need to spend time practicing before they will be able to grasp the proper technique.

Chirs is absolutely right - the video and instruction are great, the tips are correct. And precisely because the game is difficult and very confusing at times, dear coach, please use the CORRECT terminology - a pitch shot is typically done with a pitching wedge, hence the name pitch, a chip is very close to the ground - hence "chip and run".

    Very confusing to first watch Phil Mickelson video on chipping explaining hands forward and ball to back foot. Then see your video ... I guess practice what works on the course. No substitute really for repetition and adjustment.

      Michael H good post...there have been many references to Phil’s hinge and hold style on the thread and no doubt Phil is one of the all time greats! Our only request is give our ideas a shot and see for yourself what happens...you may be surprised. Be sure to let us know how it goes. Thanks for posting! 👊

      So most amateurs use a lot of hands,so most teachers teach hands forward to take the hands out ,if you watch your video you know your on hands are ahead of the ball at contact so yes this is confusing to most players

      Dana Adams furthermore, Phil’s instruction allows to control your club by using aggressive descending blow. This will help you control your distance plus consistent solid contact.
      When you using forward press, it will free your swing from staking into the ground. Most importantly, you will have to position your ball front, so that your swing will pass through ball instead of hitting it fat...

      Phil also always opens the clubface on wedges, (not addressed in this video but I'm sure there are some lessons on that. Can't teach everything in one video). With hands slightly forward, if you open the face you introduce both bounce and loft back into the shot.

    Quarantine practice time - get out the chipper... The shaft lean and loft are great tips for sure - but the thought of sliding the butt end of the club has changed the arch of my swing... couldn't get the right bounce if I "pin" the butt-end to my stomach and lift the club... it needs to slide away a bit... Brilliant. Thanks!!!!

    Watched this yesterday. Practiced about a half hour and played 18 holes. Had 2 chip in shots and almost a 3rd!!! I'm going to watch this video once a week so as not to forget! Thanks!
