- The Kitchen Garden house by Owen Architecture, a project that evolved through a process of storytelling to reconnect the home to its site and create a home with a garden and kitchen designed as one.
Owen Architecture director Paul Owen explains that the feel and the story of a space is something that evolves and is part of a narrative that is created with the client. “When we meet the clients and present design ideas, we’re essentially getting them to imagine how their life would play out in the design.”
During the design process, Owen Architecture identified that the main living spaces in the house were detached from the site, meaning that the back yard was not used. Here Paul saw an opportunity to create a home with a garden and kitchen designed as one.
In furnishing the living spaces, Toby Scott says he drew on his knowledge of the clients’ personalities to bring colour and texture into the space. Pairing a brown leather armchair with a terracotta sofa and a pink rug stemmed from knowing that the clients weren’t afraid to try something different. The round rug was a response to the round kitchen island bench, which was itself an experimental move on the part of Owen Architecture.
Evolving through a process of story-telling, the Kitchen Garden House transforms an original Queenslander into a vibrant contemporary family home that is now open and connected to both the garden, kitchen and interior spaces.

Redesigning a kitchen area which incorporates the backyard is such a beautiful combination because there is this wonderful connection between meals which either take place in an outdoor garden area or that look out to a garden area whether one is entertaining friends or preparing meals for the family. The neutral palette with beige, brass, and the silver stove is a lovely pairing.

Waited through the whole video of too many detail and close up shots for a wide shot of the entire great room from the backyard so I can see how all these spaces relate to each otter. It's revealed in the final shot, but you cover it with links to other videos. Please have a rethink, video editors.

Just discovered this channel and its very visually appealing to watch and great to hear from those involved in the design process however:
- I would love to see a more broader picture of the spaces
- The background music can be slightly irritable in some shots

Epic fail in video editing. The final shot to reveal everything is covered w thumbnails. Obscure macro shots get tiring with no pay off.
Couldn't really see a good perspective of it. Would have been nice to determine how much is detached from the house.

I agree with other commentors, distant, wide angle scene setting shots were really needed to help tell this story. I felt like the video was really well shot & edited. But I think the video with the cool background music was actually better than the subject being featured. The home design fell a little flat for me. You would think with the way the video is presented, the seemingly important interviews & music build up that we were looking at some historical architectural restoration...uh, no...so, I think that might be why the house's design fell a bit of a let down. The video was better than the home design.
Better concept is that the garden will supply the natural herbs , vegetables spices that is going to be use in the kitchen design as one where you can get your own vegetable in your own design garden (self sustaining )

Your segments use a lot of very fast and closed shots that don’t illustrate much other than a tiny angle of decorations, furniture…but not the space itself.
