Walthamstow once had the longest outdoor street market in Europe. These days it's still full of life and variety.
Joolz and Simon discover many interesting places on this walk around Walthamstow. There's lots of food including sushi, Caribbean, Polish doughnuts with alcohol and Indian pizza (it has to be seen to be believed!)
See where the first British motorcar was built and and where it now resides in the Vestry Museum full of the archives of the residents of Walthamstow.
There's London's oldest house and a remarkable collection of neon lights at Gods Own Junkyard.
There's also the Walthamstow Civic Centre which is an impressive building and of course Lloyd Park which is the home to William Morris.
It's quite apt that my tailor is just around the corner from someone so famous for his textile designs!

Charles would be one of several: Caroline, Carolean, Carolingian, Carolinian. Until last year when Charles III came to the throne, by convention, Caroline referred to the reign of Charles I and Carolean referred to the reign of Charles II. Carolingian by convention, had referred to the reign and dynasty of Emperor Charles the Great of the Frankish Empire, Charlemagne. There's no official word on how the current reign of Charles III would be referred to, but Liz Truss has referred to it in Parliament as Carolean when she was PM.

I loved the blue plaques that showcased the ordinary people that lived in this houses in the past. Paying homage to the regular folks who also made history in their own small way
I was born in Walfamstow and we lived in a terraced house in Forest Road. In 1966 or thereabouts it was sold and we moved to the coast. I don't know how much it sold for then but in 1997 in sold again for £69,500. According to the websites that know about this sort of thing it's now worth £713,000. That's mental.

Yep my uncle lives in Waltham Forest and his is worth around that also and he purchased for a similar price in the 90s.

The first 7 years of my life were spent in Walthamstow way back in the 70s, went to Coppermill school infants with one of the members of East 17 - for the life of me I cannot recall which one :)
The silver jubilee party held in Morland Road (where I lived) is one memory that instantly comes to mind.

Loved this❤ Walthamstow wasn't what I was expecting. Really vibrant interesting and tidy looking neighbourhood, amazing lack of the scourge of the Graffiti craze that has taken over much of London and other Cities.
I worked in Walthamstow for 17 years. Also placed some of the stones in those lovely mosaics you saw. I now work in Hampstead, in a place that features in the background of one of your other videos.
You probably don't remember but we met shortly on Charing Cross road on june 16. I was so nervous to meet you so what i said probably didnt make any sense apart from "I follow you on CZcams" So happy I met you that day! My first time back in London since 2012 and than I get to meet my favourite CZcamsr.😊
Yes! You finally came to Walthamstow! Absolutely loved this one, you've uncovered a few things I was completely unaware of while still showcasing a house our friends once lived in. You also ventured very close to our house so was a little disappointed we didn't run into you! 😊

I went to school in Walthamstow 1959-1964 at William Morris County Technical High School----now sadly demolished except for part of the upper playground and the old Cookery & Art block. Know the area very well. Our swimming baths was in Hoe Street, but looks as if that's gone too. Happy memories.
I was there 1957 to 1962. My form teacher for years 4 and 5 was Mr Bartlett (mathematics), a really nice bloke.
Great video Joolz. Walthamstow the centre of music culture - I always think of the Barron Knights "Live in trouble" when I think of this place - "Long ago, outside a chip shop in Walthamstow, lived a rocker called greasy joe...."
Agreed. That was in my head through much of the video and I was waiting for Joolz to pass a chip shop and give it a mention.
A sister of mine married a Walthamstow man. I visited few times, in fact went to the market for bedding which was M&S seconds apparently and still using it. Well at the end of their road was part of Epping Forest with cattle walking around. Didn't expect that!
Walthamstow was quite interesting! So many survivals from a previous age. And an enjoyable video it was.

I’ve never been to Walthamstow, but I’m definitely visiting now. Such lively locals. Plus, the classic pie and mash shop that’s now a sushi restaurant has given me a great business idea to open a hybrid Sushi Pie restaurant 😂
Would the pie have sushi in it or vice versa?
My Dads family all came from Walthamstow. My Uncle & Aunt ran Smiths Toy Shop in St James Street back in the 60s. Elmfield Road.
I was born and bred in Warfumstow, and was actually born in one of those Warner flats by the park before moving at 9 months close to the High Street. I remember the live eels in a stall outside Manze's. In the High Street there used to be the Palace Theatre, where many music hall stars performed. Demolished in the early 60s. At least the Granada was saved - it did in fact become a church for a short time before public pressure put an end to that. My father claimed to have driven the Bremer car, and there used to be a photo in the museum of him standing beside it. London buses used to be built in the town, and you can dine in a tube train carriage there now.

Great video! I was born in Walthamstow in 1950 - I think my grandad had a stall in the market. I remember there was a live eel stall where they would go on wriggling after being cut up! Monoux used to be pronounced Monocks and the th in Walthamstow pronounced as in 'thought' rather than in 'the'.
Makes more sense.
I love the George Monoux debate. As a Walthamstow lad I always say "Monocks" like the rest of E17 but my wife from Tottenham pointed out it's French. Now that Joolz has said "Monoux" Mrs B has won our "bet".

I was brought up in Walthamstow, born 1945 in Thorpe Combe hospital. George Monoux was always pronounced 'Mono' as in monogram, monochrome etc. Never anything different! It is a French name, so is pronounced as in the French language.
The George Mono(ux) school (for boys) was considered to be the 'brother school' of the Walthamstow High School (for girls) that was/still is, in Church Hill, Walthamstow. Agreed re 'th' being pronounced as in 'thought', unless you are a Cockney and want to say Walfamstow! :-) But the term 'cockney' only really 'officially' applies to those born 'within the sound of the Bow Bells' in London! A 'true cockney', that is. So that narrows it down a bit. I believe there is some connection between Walthamstow and Waltham Cross and Waltham Abbey in Essex, but can't remember what. Walthamstow was always considered to be in Essex, but that got a little lost when Greater London happened and it got a postcode etc.
Was there 25+ years ago and it was depressing back then... .I really didn't think it could of got any worse until I watched this video
Lovely & interesting walk about Walthamstow, Joolz. I loved seeing the owls, and in particular, that which perches within the Orford Social Club, which is identical to the owl on our family crest: Sapere Aude - Endeavor To Be Wise.
Always enjoy your videos (the book is great as well!) Having been born and lived in Chingford all my life I am familiar with Walthamstow. There still remains, as you showed, some very pleasant and historical locations.
So interesting, I used to visit my grandparents, who lived inConnaught street, the toilet was in the garden and we would bath in a tin bath in front of the fire.
. My grandfather grew all their vegetables in the small garden and the front, tiny space, had flowers. I would go to a small park at the end of the street. My grandmother took me to the town hall for concerts. I can remember walking up Hoe Street. They are good memories. Thank you.
My Mum was from Walthamstow and it was lovely to see the market (where I used to go a lot whenever we visited my Nan and Grandad who lived in Rectory Road until the late 70s). One of my earliest memories is of being in Manze's and watching an old woman eating stewed eels. My Mum and Dad were married in St Mary's church too.
I lived in this district when I visited London for the first time this year. What a lovely neighbourhood it is.

In the early 1970s, there was a shop in the high street called '118 Boutique,' where my friends and I purchased pairs of custom-made leather platform boots. These were in the style worn by glam pop artists such as Slade, 'The Sweet,' Elton John (I noticed he was still wearing platforms at his recent Glastonbury appearance). The quality of these real leather boots, in whatever colour you wanted, was very good; they were made on the premises to our own specifications. I recall paying about £25 for mine.

An incredible suburb of London, Joolz. This program is packed full of goodies of the district. I never knew that the combustion engined motor car started life in Walthamstow, and surprisingly, the bicycle too. That market, although not the longest now, looks delightfully inviting. Best bit of Walthamstow, which is unique to it and the surrounding areas is Epping Forest. An oasis in an urban sprawl.
The neon store is awesome! Neon started to be a "thing" in my hometown, San Francisco! The Neon Museum in Vegas is very cool to visit as well!
Brilliant vid as always Joolz. As a Walthamstow resident I loved it. When you're back in the area check out the Walthamstow Trades Hall on Hoe Street. Its like a time jump back to the 70s inside.

I believe that naming houses was initially only done by the well to do naming their manor houses but it spread to the ordinary person giving his/her house a name

So much to see in Walthemstow! My friend lives there in what used to be the dog stadium. The front of it is still there but where the track was is all houses/flats. Thought you might visit. Anyway next time I visit I know all the other places to visit. William Morris house looks particularly nice.

25:15 Walthamstow Assembly Hall is also a great recording venue for orchestras. Some of my favourite LSO records were made there. Puts the Barbican to shame sound-wise.
I might be wrong but I think the reason why there are names on the houses is because they are the names of the first families that lived there and had the houses built.

I grew up in Chingford near Walthamstow 1973 1986. Walthamstow village is great, also Walthamstow only partially gentrified and still a little rough around the edges which is great. Think the art deco town hall is becoming flats. Not sure however.

Love these videos man. To me, Walthmstow is just a place I pass to and from home or to go Westfield or Finsbury Park to play football. I have never actually spent much time in Walhthamstow. I just love all the facts and stories you have about everywhere you go. It is easy to take things for granted.
Your discovery of the plaque commemorating the inventor of the safety bicycle and later the Rover Car company reminded me that the Polish word for bicycle is Rower, pronounced with a "v".

Fantastic video! Loved the Tailor part. My Great Grandfather was a tailor in Walthamstow in which is now the antique shop on hoe street (of which he inherited after his father). Also live there now and saw a glimpse of you making the video in the village.
That brings back so many memories...spent the first 17 years of my life in Walthamstow and recognise so many of the places visited. I used to love going to the Granada for Saturday morning flicks for kids...first thing I ever watched was Escape to Witch Mountain! I managed to get back there a few years ago for a school reunion and managed to have pie and mash in Manzes before it changed over...the old gold till was still there at the time too. The village looks great with the change to cafe culture...I feel another trip coming on :)

Wonderful meander through Stow there. I lived in Chingford for 7 years and came through daily as it was my local tube. I remember mini-holland (low traffic zones) being rolled out, its so much better now! You also chose a cracking pub to end at.
Love your work Joolz. How about an episode on the tube of the most historic stations. Either that or in my region New Malden (if that still counts as London)

The (old) town hall was a frequently used recording venue post-war. EMI in particular recorded many orchestras there.

Another fabulous trip down memory lane! All these different areas of London are so well worth exploring, and you and Simon do them justice, you find such a lot of interesting stuff. It's always worth looking up as you walk around, there are some lovely features on these buildings. That long street market looks just great!
Love this. I went to school at what is now the Holy Family Catholic school on Shernhall Street, and one of my routes to & from was via Vinegar Alley. I was always under the impression that the Watch House was there to provide shelter for the poor sap who's job it was to look out for grave robbers, who were in the business of cadging cadavers for the medical schools.

Walthamstow. The most surprising place in London. Genuinely had no idea it would be so interesting.
Visited Vestry House museum today... absolutely loved it! Glad i did as the lady in there said its closing on the 22nd Dec for a year or more for an "upgrade" to attract more visitors. I don't know what that means but i hope it doesn't ruin it. If you want to visit you better go soon!!!

It was the longest market. On a Saturday it was chockablock from hoestreet to st James Street. But the council decimated it. Built blocks of flats on all the car parks so nobody could visit by car anymore.
Wow! I just moved from 90 Billet RD Walthamstow last month after 14 years, its great place to live.👍
