glad that ya liked it, its been my fav game for years. the beginning has been modified a few times, but I believe they keep it as wonky as it is for nostalgia's sake. don't know how far ya are into it by now, but you'll see how they struggle to find an image as they add new chapters.
i can try listing some of the confusing stuff:
1st, the currencies and shops: there's gems, then there's b-chips for outfits, there's actual outfit card currency for outdated outfits, battle pass coins, guild coins, roguelike coins, regular coins....i been playing only for a year now and its recent that i understood properly all of it. the best way to learn them would be to go to each shop and see what currency they use, specially when they add "event shops" and even more currencies.
b-chips, gems, and there's another one i cant recall, those credit card related currencies you can ignore for now. in order of importance and in simple terms, 1st is Asterite, you can do a lot with it and farm it weekly. Next would be Battle pass currency cause those expire on Bp reset, but without buying extra Bp access, ya get too little to worry too much about it, but to know it expires is good enough. last, to keep it simple, is Honkai shards, those come very limited and are used to improve weapons and weapons is where the majority of dmg comes from. I learned the hard way of how scarce they are when i had 12 by playing for months and realized i needed like 40+. there are quite a few other currencies but you can at least just collect them passively and figure out how to use em later. final note: ....yeah, is stupidly confusing with the amount of currencies, that will just take time to figure out, period.
2nd, battle suits/equips: ya might have figured this one by now but i have seen plenty getting confused here. story wise, Kiana goes to fight a MECH, she can equip a PSY suit, or fight zombies that are BIO, then equip a MECH suit......but the game don't make these "actually equip able", you just get a whole new character for it, or as they called it, "character card", and that's supposed to represent each iteration. that's why there's so many characters. stigmata are.....a pain to read all the way through. what's best is to look for a button on the details of them that says "best on" and tells you for who was the stigmata designed for. instead of like relics and artifacts that you device your own plan, these are more tailored to specific characters. as a rule of thumb, a limited banner character would function properly if its has her designated equips, anything else will just not work as right no matter how many spare stigmata and weapons you have. there's also the community meta that has cracked what works and what don't throughout the years....but that's a whole other conversation.
last, just to keep it short, the foundry: there is a way to patiently farm for decent stigma and weapons that are not the best, but work if you don't have their gacha ones. the only thing i can say is that it takes a looooong time to farm for very powerful stuff. is best to leave it alone, but if ya can you could get acquainted on how to navigate it for future use along with its...specific currencies >..>';.
Although ya mentioned that you would play off stream, I would love to see you play Part 2 that unlocks at Capt. Lvl 30, specially since it dropped this year and it was meant to be like a fresh start that didn't needed the introduction of all the previous chapters. It was Part 2 also what introduced the use of keyboard mouse, fun fact, so it was all wonky play for 40 chapters till recent, lol. Also, in the tactics class menu if ya recall how to get there, you can combo test almost every character, and that would be another nice thing to see you try out.
regardless, if ya are still playing, welcome aboard captain. hope ya can see where the anticipation and love that seeps into Genshin and Star rail originated from and more, and that you have fun with it all the way.

32:33 I would recommend reading the mangas Escape from Nagazora and St Freya High. Some chapters will include links to their associated manga. Reading those will help with much needed backstory!

Early team comps were mono-elemental, so you would make teams of only Fire, only Ice, only Lightning, and only Physical. They've since branched out, though: You've got the Herrscher Trio (Herrscher of Finality, Herrscher of Origin, Herrscher of True Reason) as the first real mixed-element team. You've got Azure Empyrea, Reverist Calico, and HoTr who can support other elements (except for Physical), and now you've got Senadina, Helia, and Coralie mixing Lightning and Fire. Next version will release Thelema, who is Ice, and works really well with Senadina and Hela or Senadina and Coralie. They'll also give a free Herrscher of Origin again, and her gear will be available through the battlepass.
For other teams, you can build out some from the Asterite Shop, although gearing them will take time. You can do one elemental team and one Physical to have things covered pretty okay at the start, because resources will be very limited.
I would recommend Valkyrie Sandstorm and Terminal Aide 0017 for your Physical team. Susannah does Bleed DMG, and PROMETHEUS specializes in Shieldbreak. You can use them with Starry Impression from the Starter Manual, or Cosmic Expression, also from the Asterite Shop. It takes 20,000 Asterite to unlock each of them individually. The Starter Manual gives you Herrscher of Sentience if you want to pay real money, but you absolutely do not have to do this. Besides, they gave her for free in the previous version, and they could do it again.
If you don't want to leave Ice to be covered by Thelema, you can get Sugary Starburst and/or Reverist Calico from the Asterite Shop, Li Sushang from the War Treasury, and Herrscher of Reason was an option in the choice box, and she's also in the War Treasury, as is Herrscher of Thunder. You don't have to rush to invest in your Ice Team at this time.
There is no good way to build a Fire team off the start. You can get Chrono Navi, because she's a great support, and Sirin is in the War Treasury, however you would also need HoTr for this team. It's easier to just have Coralie cover Fire DMG as part of Sena's and Helia's team.
By the same token, Sena and Helia cover Lightning DMG. However, pairing Sena with Golden Diva and Lunar Vow (gacha only) supporting her also works well, and I find Lunar Vow to be lots of fun to play.
Unfortunately to start to make battlesuits strong, you at least need their signature weapon, which is gacha-only. Fortunately, all new battlesuits will have stigmata you can forge. Unfortunately, if you're unlucky like me, you'll likely get their full stigmata set before their weapon anyway.
If you have questions, you can always ask in the chat. People will answer, whether in-game or in stream.

I always play this with a controller.
Given how new battlesuits have been using a completely different meta from in previous parts, I would recommend putting your effort into earning enough crystals to pull on the new battlesuit supplies and their equipment. Sadly, Senadina's first banner has passed, but you can still get Coralie from the Part 2 story. You can also save up for Thelema, who works with Sena, Helia, and Coralie. There're also a ton of A-rank supports you can unlock from the Asterite Shop, including Helia and Coralie, and from the War Treasury, including Li Sushang and Sirin. Never, _ever_ use your crystals on the Dorm Supply. You'll get cards you can use to pull on that. There're just too many S-ranks on it to guarantee getting the one you want. And they're all out of meta anyway. If you try to get any of them, it's because you like the character and/or their design.
There are also tutorials on most of the battlesuits, so you can learn how they work, and if you like their style.
You only really need two teams to start, and you can fill out the rest later. One team should cover elemental DMG, and the other Physical DMG. There aren't enough resources to really fully build anyone else as a new player.
And follow the Starter Manual. That will help you level up faster, and give good rewards, including Starry Impression.
Did you manage to get Sena before her banner closed? You'll have to wait for a rerun otherwise.

Setting are only available after the first mission.
    I recommend using a controller...
...when I installed it, only X-Box controller were supported.
The different "Characters" in that list that look similar are called "Battlesuits", and give different combat abilities and skills; each of this can have more than one skin, which (mostly) only change appearance and SFX.
    You started the game --> get free stuff on principle, the game just started a new campaign --> get more free stuff for promo;
both will go away after two weeks or so.
