Superyacht sinks: What do we know?

- A British-flagged superyacht has sunk off the coast of Sicily, leaving at least one person dead and six others missing.
Among those still lost are British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, the chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley International Jonathan Bloomer, and Chris Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance.
It's believed the yacht was struck by a sudden and powerful storm in the early hours of Monday morning.
Mike Lynch, known by some as the "British Bill Gates", was recently cleared after a high-profile fraud trial relating to the $11bn sale of his software giant Autonomy to US company Hewlett Packard.
Niall Paterson speaks to our correspondent in Sicily, Ashna Hurynag, to hear about the causes of the yacht's sinking and the investigation into what happened.
Plus, Danny Fortson, West Coast correspondent for The Sunday Times, talks about interviewing Mike Lynch only a few weeks ago.

The fact the co-accused of Mike Lynch had just been killed in a car crash arouses extreme suspicion.
The whole situation is kinda sketchy, especially with the lawsuit and the other dude dying a few days ago

@@dianeosborne2147 True. But I do remember how every news story has to stress in the first line that there were British citizens on board. As if the implication is that the story wouldn't be worth reporting if it was just worthless foreigners that died.

If the mast broke off it would only of aided the yachts stability. Unless it damaged the yacht whilst breaking but 😅 think that would be unlikely! With all this tragedies facts, this is looking very suspicious 🧐 wee have cctv of yachts last position with it clearly visible and afloat, why haven't we seen the sinking? 🧐 😊
Without the mast, the yacht's AI didn't know which way was was "up".

How is it a superyacht if it doesn't offer sink insurance, such as emergency chambers?
Unfortunately if it was a bit bigger with a shorter mast , would probably be fine.

Can't cope with severe weather event when the crew has raised the keel! It would keel over quite easily. Why divers haven't reported already on the condition of the mast and the keel is beyond comprehension. Hope for survivors is a waste of time. Don't risk the lives of the divers and get a professional salvage company in there and raise/float/wench the vessel to the surface.
I think that info like that is being kept from the press/public as there will be an Investigation by MAIB (as she was registered in the UK) and her insurers.....
I don't careee, buy a better boat next time 😒

Why is the news full of this story? What about the boat people risking their lives every day. What a warped society that seems to value these lives more because they have large bank accounts. Shouldn't all life have equal value?
