  • In the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide, a doctor makes a promise to a group of women survivors who are determined to live after being infected with HIV.
Hear firsthand from Dr. Kathryn Anastos and Mary Bahizi, a survivor and the leader of the sewing cooperative Ineza, one of the many programs Dr. Anastos helped create to increase healthcare and research capacity and to build community. Dr. Anastos is a physician-researcher at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Health System. Her research focuses on HIV and cervical cancer.
Dr. Anastos launches these programs with the goal of Rwandans ultimately assuming leadership of the research and community programs she established with their partnership. Before she retires, she wants to team up with African and American colleagues to establish an institute for research and education for Central Africa, which will have a sustainable funding source to ensure that the work will continue long after she leaves.
