My Biggest, Ugliest, Good Eating Tomato - Cherokee Purple

- Cherokee Purple is a tomato that many people speak highly, both for size and taste. I decided to give it a try, and put a few of them in the dutch bucket setup. Early on, they had some huge flower clusters, which turned out to be mega-blooms. I picked the biggest one, and wow was it ugly. But after slicing into it, I realized that the folks were right. It's a very good eating tomato. And for something so ugly, it turned out to be my heaviest tomato ever. As the saying goes... " it's what's inside that counts". :)

This was a scientific process. I was trying to help my fellow man, LOL
My mouth watered and I chuckled all through your video. Thankfully spring is here!
Awesome! I'm glad to hear things have gone your way this year. It sounds like you did the proper work and are reaping the rewards. Good job.
Mr. MHP Gardener Thank You for your expertise and excellent ideas!!
My experience with cherokee Purple, is the first blooms are usually big blooms (mega blooms). Thanks
for the video, it's a great one. I LOVE cherokee purple.
Great video Bobby! Glad you liked the Cherokee purple. We love them!!
I wanted to say thank you for your videos. My grandmother is a gardener and over the winter has become wheel chair bound, and I have gone and showed her you hydroponic videos and started setting up a system on her deck where she can get to them.
Thanks John. I'm pretty happy too. I was able to do a lot of planting yesterday..corn, beans, squash, and the first 75 tomatoes. It was a very good day. :)
The purple variety of heirloom tomatoes by far have the best flavor... The taste lingers on the palate like a fine wine... Oh... my..!! Thanks Bobby for getting us through the winter and inspiring us into this new season..
That's great Amanda. The older folk really know how to grow some nice vegetables.
That is one huge tomato! The multi blooms are always fun when they happen. Nice job.
i almost dropped my phone watching you slice those maters. they look amazing! What made it even more amazing was the plate it sat on. My grams had those same exact plates! You brought back to so many memories of my grams food being served on that plate. ;) i miss her so much. You bobby are definitely one of a kind.
Beautiful tomatoes :) This is my first time growing cherokee purples, and I'm hoping they come out as well as yours... Btw, you have one of the greatest southern accents I've heard on youtube, and that's from an alabama native! Very impressive, sir.
LOL... yes sir, it took some time to set up the table and camera, to get things right. But it was a fun video to do. Thanks.
Nice job man, those things were beasts. The Cherokee Purple especially.
:D
Ugly = tasty in our garden..
Good to see you took your time to make up your mind with the Cherokee purple ;) Also great to get an experts opinion too Bobby...
Have a great one...
Thanks... I was very happy with the results.
I had a sad day today until I saw this video. Made me happy 😃.
Those Cherokee purples are scrumptious!!! Keep it up Brother.. Always enjoy watching
Cherokee Purple are the BEST, in my opinion so far! I was going to skip planting them this year, but now because of your mater porn, I have to get some in the garden! I have realized how much I will miss them if I don't get em planted. Thanks, my friend! Big hugs to ya, Catfishchic
thk u for the up date that sooooo goood , I'm working on my own bucket system now and thk u for all help and keep the good work up and have fun doing it .
I have most of mine already set out too. Hopefully this weather gets straightened out and we can all have a good year.
I love this video ..... here it is 2 years later and it still cracks me up. Growin Big Beefs and Cherokee Purple's cousin the Black Krim this year. Miss your vids ..... hope all is well ...... take care.
Thanks. We've had quite a bit of sunshine lately. Looks like Spring is finally here.
great day in the morning!! those mater's look great!
It had a beautiful blossom early on, just huge. I kinda figured it would not make a pretty mater. But, it still tasted ok. :)
I happened to pick up some Cherokee Purple seeds yesterday at the store and glad I did, looks like a lot of people like 'em!
Lol! Great day in the morning! My husband says that! I can't wait until mine starts producing!
NICE... Thanks for sharing Bobby.
This is the first year that I'm growing a garden. Your vids are very inspirational.
Bobby, you ain't RIGHT!!! You cracked me up and made my mouth water. Them's some huge maters. You should be proud.

You are great man! I love what you are doing over there! I am trying to grow tomatoes in DWC system...first seedlings were a bit leggy...so I transplanted those in another pot buried until the two seed leaf and its growing now, very healthy...
Those tomatoes look amazing! I wish I had enough sunshine to grow some of those.
My favorite! I'm growing Brandywine this year as well, so we'll see if it can beat the flavor of Cherokee purple.
Cherokee's are sweet. I have two plants on my front porch in big pots. I do not have a garden since I like in town.
you are hilarious trying to figure out if you like it or not . you would think after two bites it's obvious. I was laughing away when you was trying to see if you like it or not.
when I was watching, I was laughing just waiting to see how many people would think he was being serious.
You don't have think if you like a girl or not. Same thing with tomato.
Congrats on the 2+ pound tomato :) I used to get upset with you for eating those yummy things on camera and teasing those of use who have short growing seasons but the sun has come out the temps are in the 60's and 70's, I have been working in the garden for the last 3 days getting things ready so I am one happy boy and even without a fresh tomato I am smiling with you, have a good on Bobby.
I agree... and well worth the effort. Thanks.
Hey Glenn, in my dutch buckets, I use straight perlite. Thanks.
Hahaha.... I did a taste test video last year, with the focus on the tomato. Folks said they couldn't see my face. I fixed it this time. :)
Great video, I had to go out and see if I had to remember to start some of those C.P. tomatoes when you mentioned them in an earlier video. Thank goodness I had, they are my favorite too!
mhpgardener Thank you for all the work you put into these videos. God Bless!
My mouth is watering! I can't wait till mine come up!!
I'm from South La. You've got a little cajun accent there. I know you were friends with Webcajun. I just discovered his channel and can't get enough of his videos. He lived not too far from me. Good video.
lol, that was a great video, dats sum good lookin' maters brother, No bread No manase, that slow motion slicing looked kind of, well... My son thought you were hilarious Bobby... We enjoyed that as much as you did, Have a Blessed one Buddy.
been watching all your vids. very informative. I'm starting my own hydroponics farm this November. All thanks to your vids.
Thanks, I'm glad the videos have helped.
You ain't fooling me hahaha that sure looks delicious. Thanks for video
Ordered some of those Cherokee Purple seeds today. I have about a month and a half before I can plant anything, and my whole garden is elevated(buckets and containers) high enough so my dog can't lift his leg on them. Gotta do whatcha gotta do. My biggest problem is getting enough sunshine - garden is on the western side of the house. If I can, I will move some of the plants during the day so they get enough sun (a real pain), but as I said earlier ....... you gotta do whatcha gotta do if you want to grow your own. If I had the room, I would put the containers on a hay wagon and just move the whole lot as the sun moves. LOL!
First time i tasted a Cherokee tomato, i was hooked and yes, they are that darn good!
Excellent. I just started setting my plants out on Saturday. They won't be producing until about mid-June.
Nice work Bobby.
Great video! I like how you're "not sure" whether you like the cherokee purple. After my disappointing tomato year in 2012, I wanted to make sure I did it right this summer. So I mulched, fertilized, and pruned the branches near the ground early on. Now this year, despite the tremendous rains here in northern Alabama, I have a bumper crop of 17 tomato plants, including my first-ever cherokee purples. And I love the purples! They are consistently rewarding me with 1 to 1.5 lb. tomatoes!
Great video and one that I know you had fun with!
Loved that taste test!
Black Cherry, Old German and Black Russians are also very good heirlooms. The two black ones are like the Cherokee Purple, and the German one is light and citrus-like. Excellent flavors.
Cherokee tomato sure is Gnarly looking thing, but by they way you had to keep on testing the flavor of that tomato it must have been pretty darn good.
Best taste of all in my opinion they can well also
Best tomato in my opinion.
I try to have a bit of fun. Thanks, the weekend is off to a great start. Lot's of gardening work today, finally. :)
Wow looks great. We will have garden fresh tomatoes soon in Dallas,TX
I'll be planting a few more for my fall crops. Hopefully I can get them regular shaped.
You are a real inspiration my friend. I just put out all the pepper plants that I grew from the peppers you sent last year. Only thing I couldn't seem to get up from seed was the Datil. I got one plant out after putting down about 20 seeds. All of the rest are coming along real good. Don't have any clue on what made a difference on the Datil.
Anyway thanks for all you do.
I got Cherokee Purples, Yellow Pear, Big Rainbow, Chadwick, Green Zebra and a few more varieties out. Hope for best
You're such a tease!! LOL Oh this just ain't fair I want a taste! Hopefully soon I'll at least be harvesting some cherry tomatoes! Have a great weekend!
Thank you for all your videos. I miss Donald. I really hope you carry his boots. He was awesome to watch as are you. Purple Cherokee are my favorite. Lord willing lâche pas
lol Bobby you made my day on that cherokee lol I just kept laughing... I needed that God Bless! Got me 4 beef steaks about 1 ft high and won't be long before they will be going in buckets.
I like your demeanor. Good video. Thanks.

Your tomatoes look amazing! I grew Cherokee Purple last year (and Black Krim) and they were so delicious.
Love the cherokee purple.I planted 17 plants. They are good to can them also.
Got me laughing out loud here. So funny. Awesome video!
i had trouble getting my purple cherokees to fruit last year. any tips? i had two of them that made awesome looking plants, but i got very little production. they made tons of flowers but 90% of them would dry up and fall off. the few tomatoes i got off of them were the best eating tomatoes i have ever had.
Nice videos, just started following you & your adventures in growing
Gettin busy with a tomato. Love it!
Yes...I grew a few of them last year. They were some healthy maters.
Cherokee Purple, The only tomato my grandpa ever used to grow! I love them!
Cool, sounds like you're doing a great job.
Thanks. That was a new angle that I was trying.
I love all of your videos.
Cherokee purple is one my favorite tomatoes. The flavor is unbelievable, a little thicker skin, color is amazing.
I'll try to remember to start some for the fall crops too.
Cherokee Purples are the prime rib of the tomato world. :)

What is the yield of big beef, geronimo and cherokee purple per plant grown hydroponically?
i like your style! subscribed! im a DWC grower with 4 strains going right now. Beefsteak, Green Zebra, Costoluto Genovese and Black Krim
It's a good one TJ, well worth growing.
Wow! That's awesome. You made me so hungry, and I hope my Cherokee Purples turn out half as big and delicious as yours. God Bless!
You wrong for that! I sure could use one of those tomatoes right there! Mouth is watering son! Nice review, thanks
Haha... I remember hearing that in school myself. If you bring it, plan on sharing it.
This is an awesome sight! Yahweh has truly blessed you. Thanks for the time and effort you put into each video...although in this one you seem to be having sooo much fun!!! I know alot of work went into the "preshow preparations"
Hey Z... I just started planting outside yesterday. So it'll be awhile on them. But having a greenhouse sure does have it's advantages. ;)
love your accent and growing sense.
How do you trim your purple Cherokee? I keep getting suckers out of my flower clusters! Ie flower cluster comes out main stem and then shoots out another branch! Have similar things happen?
How can you tell when the cherokee purple is ready /ripe to pick?
I grow them in my garden every year here in Auckland, New Zealand !!!
STOP! Your killing me! LOLOL My mouth is watering and I'm ready to faint.
I do have my seeds started and many tomatoes too, but it will be forever before I can even put them outside, so I hope you get a kick out of making us suffer.
I'm going to live on Tomato sanwiches when I start harvesting them.
I also love tomatoes mixed with just cucumbers with a bit of dressing, but without is ok too. See, I'm already dreaming about them, and it's your fault.
CONGRATULATIONS on the 2 pounder Whooo Hooo
now bobby that is a funny video. we are growing cherokee purple this year, we trialed them last year and decided to go ahead with it. as you say "lord willing ill see you next time". ?
Amazing. My Cherokee Purples all just had one bloom per tomato.
Great video I have about a month till I can eat some more cherokee purple one of my favorite toms.
I have a couple of Dr Wyches Yellow ready to go in the ground, probably Thursday if it dries out enough. Box Car Willie is one that I need to look at.
I like to add bell peppers and onions to the maters and cukes. It makes a very nice little salad. Thanks Sheila.
