David came up with the idea that we should try doing a no buy month, only buying the essentials, like food, but not buying anything that we don’t truly NEED for 30 days. So we tried it! And what we realised after this little experiment was that there is good news and there is bad news. The effects of this month are both positive and quite a bit negative. Have you ever tried this? Or are you too much of a shopaholic to go even one month without a spur of the moment cheeky little purchase?
    I talk about:
    - budget tips
    - why you should have a no buy month
    - how to save money
    - what i spend money on
    - my thoughts on shopping
    - what to buy second hand
    - shopping high
    - the effects of a no buy month
    - how often you should spend money

I am surprised that you actually dislike shopping because you own the most gorgeous clothes and home decor! would you consider making a video specifically about how to shop "right" (to prevent the re-buying loop) ? I admire your approach a lot and the combination of 'quality over quantity', simplicity and patience seems to truly be the key

I wouldn’t say I’m addicted to shopping or anything. But the reason why I enjoy shopping is because I feel like each clothing piece or accessory that I get is allowing me to be one step closer to who I am. There’s always been a stigma of men being into fashion and I feel like I can truly show who I am on the inside on the outside when I wear my clothing and accessories. I finally get to go to the stores and actually browse and put together outfits and weigh which thing I like more and touch the fabrics!

It's a control thing. I tried a no buy month and it gave me so much anxiety. I spent a decade dirt poor so it brought me back to that mindset of I can't spend mo ey because I have no money and it started affecting other areas of my life. Suddenly I couldn't have ingredients in the house unless I knew exactly when they would be used. I felt anxious going out with friends. Being able to spend money on frivolous stuff is like a little reminder that I am at a place where I can do that and that I don't have to spend so much time thinking about money. It all felt like someone who had recovered from an ED trying a diet that required tracking. It took up so much brain space and was all I could think about

Jenny, I love your space over here. I started a no buy year for 2024. You ask about people who enjoy shopping and how we feel...but I think for me I don't actually enjoy it that much, but I fell into this habit of buying things especially after seeing stuff to want on social media. But the real reason for the shopping was because of other things like being lonely, frustration at lack of progress on personal projects and lack of ability to be present and do "nothing" in the moment. I started posting videos to keep me accountable in my no buy, but I realized that it's not the shopping I miss. I have to work through the other issues. So, there's lots more for me to explore this year as the challenge goes on.

You clearly have a lot of beautiful, high quality and unique clothes. You must have researched and bought these items, a great number of times. You say you dont like shopping for clothes and yet have so many nice clothes, I would love to see a video on your shopping process. Trust me, I get the decision fatigue and am often overwhelmed by the amount of choice. Plus we are advertised to more, and more effectively, than ever.
I think it is easier not to shop when you already have an excess of beautiful expensive things that you already love. I feel the need to shop and curate my style due to societal pressure to appear unique and stylish and put together. Anyway blah blah blah, love your vids xxx

I know this isn’t an option for everyone, but living about 1.5 hours away from the city. In a small boring town has been the ultimate game changer for me. I might not socialize or have exciting activities on a daily basis, but the experiences I do have are well planned and feel like absolute luxury compared to my time living in big cities.

I think I end up shopping at the end of the week or weekend because I want that shiny new feeling to make me feel like the stress of the week has been worth it. I’m proud of the fact that I typically just end up window shopping, not wanting to be wastefully consuming and impulsively parting with my money (I owe a lot of that process to YOU, Jenny, you taught me to be a thoughtful shopper!). But I go into the shop hoping that THIS time there’ll be a dress or a sweater or something for my home that makes me feel like a million bucks, that treasure hunting feeling you talked about. Usually I end up thinking, why didn’t I just go home and rest rather than chasing a fancy and being disappointed? So I’m trying to prioritize going home and taking care of myself or tidying, since while less shiny, it usually means you’re taking better care of yourself in the long run. It varies slightly for books for me, though. I’m a librarian so I can get many at work for free, but I still greatly enjoy purchasing and owning books in my personal collection. Even if a book I bought doesn’t end up thrilling me, in the end I’m happy to have supported an author, a bookshop, and the publishing industry with my purchase. ❤

I am currently in my low-buy year. I have the addiction to buy something from Vinted, every weekend or after work if I have time I like to go to a second hand/vintage shop. As you said I would spend my free time shopping and on the second month of low-buy year I realized that I don't have much hobbies to focus on and I just get dopamine from buying stuff. Currently I am trying to build a new routine and rediscover my childhood hobbies or just trying something new.

I am a recovering shopaholic. It's a high and then a low for me. I got into debt from it and one day said enough is enough and created my own business and paid it all off in about 3.5 years. I still shop but pay cash. I also save way more than I spend. I learned the hard way. Cait Flanders from Canada wrote a great book on this subject called Adventures in Opting Out. I was somehow addicted to shopping from age 15-38. I used to order from online shops on a weekly and sometimes even daily basis. Only later I realized that there was certain emptiness inside me. After my daughter was born, a year later I separated from my husband (who had a severe depression), moved to another city etc. End of 2019 I decided I wanted to try a low buy year. So I prepared and for the last time ordered some necessary items like comfortable underwear. At the same time I started a large clear out over several years. Rules I defined were similar to yours with one exception: I allowed myself one unnecessary item per month. At the end of the year I was surprised how easy it was (when the urge to purchase something suddenly had disappeared) and how good I felt to for the first time make a mindful purchase decision. So actually yes, I had bought exactly one piece of clothes every month (had ordered more and sent back all items except one). Finally I found out that even this one item was unnecessary... So starting from the following year I introduced a no buy year and am still sticking to it. I kept mostly very high quality designer items plus sustainable clothes in my wardrobe that I actually started using. Now I very rarely buy a piece - mostly when traveling. Feel so much better especially since it's so important to care more about our nature and how to preserve it. 🤍

My spending does sometime bother me, as I start the month with a good bank balance and then I think I can buy all the things. Half way through the month I panic and need to totally cut back so I can get the essentials. I sometime also go down the rabbit hole of buying all the things on a theme. Went through a period of buying ‘bee’ themed stuff as my nickname became Queen Bee. Completely ridiculous and wasted so much. I get a much bigger buzz (excuse the pun) reselling my stuff now, so make that a goal. Definitely going to try a dry March and see how I get on. Thanks for the inspiration. Keep on keeping on. Queen Bee

Adhd is my reason for impulse buys tbh. But I've also started a lo-buy year. I'm being more mindful and really thinking whether I need something or if I'm just getting it for the sake of it. I have however loosened a rule for myself. If I've been wanting something for a while and it is suddenly on sale ( a significant sale) then I'll get it.
I've wanted a specific vinyl record shelf for a good few years and it was always super expensive and I eventually got it for black Friday at like 70% off. Between waiting ages and then getting it much much cheaper, it brings me joy every day.

I had a couple no buy years! It was very good feeling. I definitely feel our purchases need to have a good motive or use out of them. As a teen, once I got a job, I would spend my whole paycheck on things I did not need and it was so bad. I have raised my children differently and taught them good finances and raised them as minimalists. My oldest has a job and only buys himself ice cream once in a while! That is it!

I am very into color shades. And ”my” shades are quite rare. So when I go shopping I am hunting these shades. And if I see them, and like the garment, I buy it. It gives me a kind of ”safety”, like now I have it! I know I’m going to love it and use it for a long time. I feel calm and safe. So I would say that feelings are the most dominant factor. Like I had caught an animal in the forest hundreds years ago 😅

Looking through the comments, I'm relating to so many other viewers. When I was younger, I had a problem with thrift shopping. "What's the harm in spending a few bucks for something lovely?" Cue the repeated decluttering sessions as many of the things that seemed lovely during the shopping/hunting high didn't always stay that way in my eyes down the line. Not to mention how I'd often compromise on fit, quality and how the item worked with my current closet because, well, it's such a great deal and isn't it cute!
Jenny is timely as always as my no buy started this month and I'm planning on sustaining it for six months. While I'm seeing some benefits and noticing interesting habits of mine, like the urge to pick up an interesting book or another box of tea every time I'm out despite my overflowing stash of both To Be Read and To Be Drank, I've also experienced an influx of not too cute expenses. Multiple birthdays, car troubles, running out of items that make sense to buy in bulk, you name it.
I'm sure it'll get easier. Like Jenny, I'm thinking only so much can be cut before it makes more sense to focus on bringing income in.

I did a no buy month after Christmas where I noted everything I wanted to buy and it was surprising how by the end of the month most of the things on the list I did not care to purchase! I now write down every purchase I make to keep myself more accountable and I have a wish list for things I would like to purchase which are non essential, if by the end of the month I still want the wish list item I will then treat myself to it but at least this way I am more conscious of what I am spending and I am not purchasing crap that I will not use ☺

It’s hard but we’ve got to try: read, write, walk, watch movies, taking breaks from technology, go see small villages depending where you live (I’m near Florence, so there’s different Tuscan villages I can see not all interesting but still) and also learn to experience more often uncomfortable boredom so that with time it gets easier to bear its unpleasantness.

For example I can spend all my salary in first few days. But I really like beautiful clothes and style, and since I don't have much clothes I always feel like I need smt desperately. I live in a small mountain town. We have some cool amenities but there's a lot we can't get here. I tend to stock us up with mail order seasonally, then take a break from buying. . . it sort of goes in cycles. While I love the flexibility of being able to buy sustainably-made goods from small producers around the world, I find the mail/packages constantly streaming in stressful. So I take breaks. But I don't do 'no buy' months per se. That feels too much like harsh dieting rather than a steady moderate diet of healthy food.

Hello - interesting conversation. I like “window” shopping - especially in foreign cities with interesting boutiques - not necessarily to buy something but to be inspired by it for a project… whether an outfit or an art or design project. The act of “shopping” for an item is a lot more utilitarian which involves a lot of research and cost comparison. But, again, window shopping in beautiful boutiques is like going to an art gallery. In some cases a person may find a “must have” but that is rare. Libraries are where I have great fun and digital magazines from my library. Also if you “dress-up” but have good walking shoes or boots and have a homemade beverage to go, it becomes a really great “free”event. Or go with a friend and grab a coffee or a drink after… ❤Love your insights! Thank you.

Overall, I also don't really enjoy shopping and would definitely never waste a day off on it or a day in an interesting city abroad. Yet, I have found shopping excitement while I buy second-hand furniture, cutlery, glassware and so on in charity shops because of the unexpected objects I find there and the low prices. That really feels like treasure seeking and because of that feeling I also sometimes go home with treasures I do not use enough and had better left for someone else to find.

Hannah Louise Poston has some excellent content about shopping and consumption. She did a no-buy year in 2018 but the impact informs her life choices even today. She's a creative (a published poet) and she also reviews makeup in the loveliest way. Highly recommend her channel.

I am definitely "addicted" to thrifting for clothing and decor items. I try to rein it in, though. I've really been more intentional and picky since October of last year. I try to follow little rules like not buying anything in thrift/secondhand shops that I won't wear within 1 week (excluding off season items). It's really working so far. I don't have a problem enough to make it a budget issue, but I feel ashamed of my past closet purges (2 big trash bags every 8 weeks is not okay with me).

For me shopping becomes a problem when I'm buying for my fantasy self, kind of like escapism. There is definitely a hangover when you realise that an item is no good and you regret buying it.

once in a while i love to go to a vintage market and love the feeling of the haunt. usually i set a very very low budget, 10 dollars tops and walk almost all the market (i live in Argentina, the things use or vintage are very cheap for the rest of the world xD).

I think shopping is for Some a social thing. Also most people I believe like to see something nee. The excitment for something new a new beginning lifestyle change. Most addictions are a rush that is Really hard to ignore if you have do not have a clear vision of what you want t archieve. Thats also why we keep on buying and have the hope to score that onething.

i keep a relatively minimal wardrobe, but in 2023 i decided to expand the variety a little (30 items --> 42!) as well as improve my workout clothes. now, i have to strengthen the self-discipline muscle so that i'm not on a runaway train. i've decided on a 6mo no buy-so far so good! it's an easy return to my old ways, but i'm sure if i hadn't consciously decided to do so i would be spending more.

I was addicted to thrift stores shopping! This was not super costly but I kept decluttering my closet as things accumulated quickly. I stopped going except if i really need something but do I? How many clothes do I need? I have one closet and I am keeping it that way: not overspilling in other parts of the apartment. However when I travel, shopping is not my priority at all but I will go in a random shop if I am attracted to it....

I know this will sound a little crazy, but I use to shop Amazon (don't hate me, I live in Hawaii and things are hard to find sometimes) 2 or 3 times a month. Now I shop more consciously, putting things in my basket and at the beginning of the month check everything in the basket to make sure I still want/"need" it. Not great, but better 🤨

This was so interesting and I have to say the conclusion was a revelation! People need to hear this! Yes, “no buy”months can be great but realize and understand it may not save as much money as you may think. Of course monitor spending habits and do not go into debt for frivolous purchases, but you should definitely focus energy on creating different streams of income. If your yearly income is 40k, even if you saved as much as you could, that savings will fixed, there is no room for exponential growth. I love Jenny and her vids😅 I watch them all!

I don't buy much things in general. Most of the time I am buying something just because I really need the item and don't have alternative. But where I have to be careful is with buying food outside the house 😅 I am big foodie, and there are so many nice little vegan bistros, cafes and restaurants in Munich and I want to keep up and try them all. But prices skyrocketed here as well, so I am trying to plan only one restaurant visit per month...

Im more likely to buy food. I like trying new snacks amd old favorites. I also like getting coffees and fast food .
I find clothes hard for me to go shopping for . Im tall so sometimes its hard to find bottoms long enough for me. So then shopping becomes more frustrating.

I love the thought of becoming a new person by getting a new outfit but of course, this was and will not ever be true. But it seems that I tend to forget...
I try to buy only 6 new garments this year and hopefully only when I'm abroad so they will function as a souvenir as well.
I do this mostly with socks and underwear and by that I always get a little into travelling mood wgen I get dressed in the morning (so today I wear Swedish Jeans, an American bra, a danish blouse and a vintage cardigan.).
I spend a lot of money on my "adhd tax" , for late returns, unused apps etc...

I think my weakness is eating out. Since I’m nomadic owning things just isn’t a big thing for me. Unless it’s gear. I have a massive weakness for quality gear (all of which I save up for).
However, I’m good enough at saving I spend 3-6 months traveling off savings every year…

I allow myself to buy one new item for my home per month, this could be a kitchen gadget, a lamp, etc, but mostly second hand. this way I am slowly building my dream home. I also allow myself to finance one sewing project per month, as I am sewing my own wardrobe bit by bit. aside from that I maybe invite my boyfriend once in a while for dinner out, otherwise its mostly his turn, because he earns a bit more. Social gatherings with friend and family take place mostly at my place because I cook so well and we all need to look after our money. Currently I am saving up for a kitchen renovation. Saving goals like that help me to thoroughly question any impulse buys, because I enjoy the feeling of getting that much closer to my saving goal item much more. Also nowadays I value higher quality than before, and often that's out of my budget for a spontaneous purchase. that helps with shopping to.

I’m really interested to hear about how you guys share household expenses and money in general as a long standing couple living together. Do you each have a personal account or do you just share everything? I imagine its good to have your own account for personal savings or gifts (like the vintage earrings)? Hope this is not too personal - I’m curious because I myself am trying to find the sweet spot at the moment regarding our shared/not shared expenses. As always, loved the video, will absolutely try the no buy month, or maybe a week? ;)) Lots of love x

I used to have a weakness for clothes. Then I moved into an apartment with a very small closet and had to sort out drastically. That and a color and style consultation helped me to shop more thoughtfully. I buy a maximum of 10-20 items a year, nothing twice, only high quality (fair brands, second hand) and only when I've had something on my wish list for at least a month. Everything in my wardrobe fits together and impulse purchases out of boredom, reward etc. are no longer a temptation.

I'm lucky to have a very particular taste in just about anything. So I hardly ever find anything I really like and wish to own. So I don't feel the need to limit my shopping. On the other hand, if I rarely find something I love and the price is acceptable for me I buy it without any guilt. I haven't bought anything this year yet (other than groceries) except for new glasses because the old ones broke. Oh yes, and I "splurged" on a 4 euro lipstick :-D

I recently realized that often just the act of clicking "buy now" and ordering sth online gives me more serotonin than when the item actually arrives at my door. That's really weird. The act of paying for the item and the anicipation for it is more exciting than actually getting the item into my hands. Can anyone relate or explain this?
