  • On this episode of Station Cribs we travel up to Indiana to ‪@CarmelFireDepartment‬ Station 44 to take a tour inside! This station is just a couple of miles North of Indianapolis. Carmel Fire Department covers 52 square miles and over 100,000 full time residents. Station 44 is one of 6 stations in the Carmel Fire Department. They did a great job designing this station with Axis Architecture to keep the classic and traditional look of a fire station. This beautiful station does a great job covering the Carmel area and makes sure that it's residents are very well protected. We want to thank them for having us out! This is the most incredible single engine house I have ever seen in over 40 years in the Fire Service. When the video started with an aerial view, I fully expected to see a ladder and even a rescue in those quarters. The main point to me and will probably be unremarkable to most people is Carmel staffing numbers. There are absolutely not many Departments their size staffing 5 on their ladder companies.

    Love the brothers and great firehouse but boy in the FDNY we do things different. We used to have water bugs the size of small weights in the showers. Old buildings. Only 1-2 shifts. 11 guys per fire house unless the chief and aide. Mostly 24 hr shifts. Kitchen is the therapy room. Rough crowd for sure.

    One thing I would like to know when asking how people can join the department is what if you already have Fire experience and are already a Paramedic. Would one still need to go through the 6 month training? If you could, would you be able to ask that question when the topic comes up in future videos? Thank you in advance! Awesome videos!

      @CarmelFireDepartment Před 2 lety +1

      We still send everyone through the training. Obviously if your a certified FF or Medic you wont retake the state or national tests, but recruit school is important. There’s no telling the quality of training someone received. Some folks may have taken Billy Bobs Backyard EMT course. We want to make sure your trained to the level we expect all our people to be at. Building camaraderie with your hiring group is important too, and based on the grades throughout class determines your seniority upon graduation.

      @CarmelFireDepartment Před 2 lety +1

      It’s actually 344. As the area has exploded in growth, a new numbering system was needed as we run with departments from many departments from 3 different counties. All of central Indiana adopted the system. 3 signifies the county (Hamilton), the first 4 means Carmel, the last 4 is which station from Carmel. Prior to this numbering system it wasn’t uncommon for us to have mutual aid coming in to assist, and have to ask who specifically it was. We had stations 91-93 to the east & west, one from neighboring Zionsville and the other from neighboring Fishers. It is now 291 vs 391.

    Do you also have the problems in your country that violence against emergency forces occurs more often? Here in Germany it often happens that firefighters are hit by cars because people want to work or they are verbally and physically attacked! That's why I wonder if it also happens in the U.S. that there is no respect for emergency personnel? Because we all just want the same when the alarm goes off and we jump into the vehicles! We want to HELP!

    • @CarmelFireDepartment
      @CarmelFireDepartment Před 2 lety +6

      Statistically we’re at 65% EMS, so certainly more than fire / other. Not all 6 of our stations run an ambulance. We run all our engines ALS, and carry all the same medical equipment as the ambulances. The two closest ambulances (Station 341, 345) are both within a few miles, so we felt it was fully acceptable to temporarily move Medic 344 out for a few months. There was not room in the temp house / structure for both units.
