    At 8.04, Guscott checks his run to make sure he just misses being able to catch Lomu and therefore make a real tackle on him, but he makes sure he is close enough to make a gallant-looking attempt. I can't imagine international rugby players of his calibre being scared on the field, but clearly he was - imagine what a beast Lomu must have been?

    • @rh5466
      @rh5466 Před 3 lety

      That's pretty harsh, John. Guscott doesn't play wing. Where was the England wing marking Lomu? Why was Guscott obliged to speed out to the sideline to get to Lomu? He checked his run because there was so much space and Lomu could have easily stepped in side given Guscott's obliged sprint. The tackle was ineffective not because Guscott checked his run (which he had to do), but rather because he got his head on the wrong side in the tackle itself. Witness Japie Mulder in the '95 RWC Final. Mulder took Lomu down on the sidelines because he put his head in front, not behind.

    • @frankslade33
      @frankslade33 Před 3 lety

      @@rh5466 I watched it again, I still think it was because he was not exactly overly keen on a head to head with Lomu, that the check in his step was an involuntary manifestation of that.

    I remember watching this on the telly. Probably England's best performance of the tournament, very disappointing to lose it. Probably inferior fitness showing in the last quarter - plus we could have done with keeping the ball out of Lomu's hands.

    • @rh5466
      @rh5466 Před 6 lety

      It was actually a very good England team, featuring a number of core players in the 2003 triumph. That includes Johnson, Dallaglio, Wilkinson, Dawson and others. Even the players that didn't last to 2003 (e.g., Guscott, DeGlanville and Healey) were very good players. Jason Leonard too. Look at the tackle by DeGlanville on Lomu at 1:03. DeGlanville also scored in this game. In his career he wasn't the flash presence of other players, but the man was total commitment. He'd tackle anything if he was wearing an England shirt. This is why he was captain, and it was a good choice in my opinion.

    • @powerbite92
      @powerbite92 Před 5 lety

      De Glanville wouldn't and couldn't move the ball. Great at solo crashes, terrible at distribution, see how many times NZ move the ball down the line in this video, England didn't even once. England up the jumper rugby and bad midfield distribution is why they lose world cups.

    Can someone tell me what happened after Jonah Lomu scored that amazing try at 8:13 and suddenly that scuffle started between him, Umaga and some English players? What was the reason for that, because I couldn't see what really happened?

    • @chewie2240
      @chewie2240 Před 8 lety +3

      +dvchel Yeah what happened was that after Lomu scored he had Dallaglio on top of him and as Dallaglio was getting back to his feet he pushed Lomu's head into the ground which caused the scuffle with Umaga and some of the other ABs.
      It wasn't a malicious act by Dallaglio, it was just frustration that Lomu had walked through England again after all the work they had done in the build up to the game to find a way to stop him.

      I recon that those comments are self explanatory. I am half Italian half Kiwi, and I watched the game in Milan. I had a couple of English people saying they were sorry while spotting me on the street with the ABS jersey on afterwards the game. I have full respect for British people but sometimes some of them like to cross the line of politeness and become pricks. As happens with Italians and (much less) with New Zealanders at times. To be honest I feel really disappointed with the defeat, cause I felt NZ never expressed their true potential and were outplayed for 75 minutes. But we will raise up back, as we did after 2007, which lead to a 12 years international domination. It was a pleasure speaking to you briefly here, wish you all the very best with your passion and career brother!

      genius level would have been to leave cullen at the back, wilson on wing and bring umaga in to centre. Hart is an amateur. no way would i have moved cullen from his spot. i would have wilson at 13 before i move cullen. watching back some of the 99 footage wilson was good in the tri nations. but then got exposed defensively at times at the 99 rwc. lost count how many times cullen backtracked and saved wilsons ass.

      TBH I would have selected Alama Ireremia at center and Alatini at 2nd 5 and played Cullen at FB , Umaga and Lomu on the wings. Wilson on the bench.
      Can you believe that Wilson was only 28 when he retired in 2002 ?

    • @jydaflyest
      @jydaflyest Před 7 lety

      TheForge10: I remember Wilson took a sabbatical after the Super 12 in season in 2000, and rejoined the ABs back in 2001. I didn't know he was only 28 when he retired, but ain't nothing wrong with walking while you can. Remember when he ran down Joe Roff in the 2001 Bledisloe game? That was epic. Also, I agree with your choice of Alatini/Ieremia in midfield, with Lomu, Umaga, and Cullen at the back 3. Wilson coming off the bench wouldn't have been a bad idea at all. John Hart botched this tournament, and you'd think after 1998, when he miraculously kept his job despite going in winless in the Tri-Nations, winning the RWC was the only way he was ever going to redeem himself.

    • @TheForge10
      @TheForge10 Před 7 lety +1

      jydaflyest
      I know why he left rugby. Before Wilson's father passed away he wanted him to go back to cricket, which he did with mixed results and a couple of games for the Blackcaps.
      Cam you believe Alama Ieremia was in the squad and he was a specialised center/2nd 5 but Hart got clouded with having Lomu , Umaga and Cullen all playing at once.

      This was a very good England team -- show some respect. As good as NZ was? No, perhaps not; at least not at that precise moment in history. But just a couple years later the core of this '99 team went to NZ and beat the All Blacks in their own back yard with only 14 men. Then they hopped the ditch and beat Oz. Then they went to South Africa and beat the Springboks. All three major Southern Hemisphere teams, in succession, away from home. They invited each of them back to England in the autumn and beat them all. Not easy to do, to beat all three southern giants home and away. And then of course they went back to Australia in 2003 and won the World Cup. And how did NZ fair in '99 and '03?? Some (not necessarily me) would say they were pretty much the laughing stock. In fact, an argument could be made that it was the kind of "hilarious" arrogance that saw the ABs lose so much in that era.
