I love how the music in the first phase goes "aww, listen to the sad choirs, aren't you feeling pity for whom you fight?" Like Sif in Dark souls 1 so the player think "Ok, this is the kind of boss that, as his health goes down, will become much weaker and will make me feel bad for slaying it, got it!", and then the second phase start, he sprouts wings, attacks much faster and in a completely erratical manner, can call lightning to cover the whole map, and the music suddenly become much more frantic, with psycho strings, as if Tsukasa Saitoh was saying "Surprise, mothafuckah!"

Kos died because she washed ashore, the Old Hunters only harvested her body for parasites, thus why Maria threw her Rakuyo into the well, she was so disgusted with the actions she commited with her weapon, that she forsook it
The kins men of the fishing hamlet killed kos because they mistoke it for a monster. The masts of the ship we see in the ocean are the ships kos sunk. They killed kos and it washed up on shore, Gehrman and Maria then came to the fishing hamlet and slaughtered all of the kins men they then harvested the embryo (orphan of kos) and used it to make rom.

I like how in the lore the best hunters are trained, people taught over time to fight the beasts. But then you, some random foreigner, come along with a varying array of experience (veteran, troubled childhood, sole survivor etc. for experience, Milquetoast/WoS/Scion etc. for little to no experience). You, the Hunter, are the one that not only kills (almost) all the other Hunters left in the Night of the Hunt, the one that slays the biggest Beasts, kills Great Old Ones, and becomes a God.
All because some weird little white dude gave you a stick and gun after you died to some creepy ass werewolf.

Don't forget that you are also gifted with immortality due to the hunters dream so whether you do or don't have any beforehand experience, you'll have the time to gain it. Just like you as a player.
I like to think, that us, the hunter - are the living embodiment of retribution come to clean up the mess in Yharham. Like a God that has taken human form. Innocent or guilty, it doesn't matter, all will fall to our hunter's tools. Maybe in the end, we were really a Great One all along.

Well, I suppose it is basically a god baby, in a strictly Lovecraftian sense of "god." It's sort of like fighting the husk of Gwyn in Dark Souls (without parrying)... a challenge, to be sure. Now just imagine what they'd be at their full strength...
It's a running theme of the entire soulsborne amalgamation. We are but parasites running through a dead world. Our battles are in earnest and amongst our kind it is a great endeavor, but the truth is that we feed on the congealing blood, the embers, the ashes, the dark after the light. We are the harbingers of what comes next, after all the legends are dead.
The weirdest thing for me was that it looked fully grown straight out of the womb.

IronianKnight A bit late to say this, but, I want to put my own opinion in. Kos, as we see here, is dead, but dead by what? No Great One would dare attack it of they knew what ungodly abomination would come out of it. So, the answer is the Hunters, the humans. Humans were killing all the Great Ones, as we've seen and possibly done with Mergo, Ebreitas, Rom, the Amygdalas, and the Moon Presence. So, Kos's answer? Male her next kin of sheer hatred, make it the apex predator, make it a Hunter itself. This is basically Kos flipping humanity as a whole the middle tentacle. Saying that they are the true monsters of this story, not the Great Ones.
There's a theory that Kos is innately dead. Like, as in she's sort of a corpse god, floating on the water and dangling threads into yharnam that seep into people's brains (you can see Yharnam in the sea of that area). I honestly like that a little better in terms of concept. Sounds more interesting than "bunch of hicks harpooned a literal god to death".

Imagine a non sweet one
This fight managed to disturb me in a way that no other in the souls series ever has. The fact that the orphan was just experiencing the world for the first time, and was given only seconds to take it all in before being forced to fight for his life is messed up. The way it yelps and squawks and flails around is bone chilling because it makes perfect sense.
Zack Smith I mean at the start of the fight he just sits their and looking miserably up at the moon.
He only starts attacking when you approach him with a giant flaming sword.
Also one theory is that this dream world was created not only to punish the hunters but also as a kind of safe space for the orphan. In the real world he might have been kidnapped and experimented on by people wearing similar clothes to you.

There's a video on youtube of a pregnant cockroach some guy put into his ant farm (he didn't know it was pregnant) and the ants attack it which forces it into labor. It gives birth to a dozen or so baby cockroaches who are immediately swarmed and killed by thousands of ants.

I love the idea that the Orphan is an Old One's attempt to understand humanity, by giving birth to a rough approximation of one.... or at least how it experiences it. The Orphan is very much like a Hunter, trick weapon and blood-based ranged attacks and all. The Orphan is what Kos saw when it looked at Hunters.

i was trying to beat orphan a few days ago, and when he was about to die he suddenly did the scream lightning attack, then for some reason as the lightning starts to appear the power in our house went out

I’m seeing that a lot of people here feel bad for killing Orphan, but I want to point out that your actually kind of doing him a favor by killing him. Orphan of Kos is stuck in the hunter’s nightmare just like Ludwig and Maria are, trapped within the body of his dead mother. Hence when you kill him, the line “Sweet child of Kos, returned to the sea.” Your finally letting him return to the cosmos to be with his mother, and thus fixing the old hunters deeds and ending the nightmare.
Imagine the strength of a full grown KOS. This was literally an infant

What we're seeing here folks is a space squid's final act of giving birth to a pissed off angel -being with a massive cancerous club-knife hand, inside of a nightmare (Which is also a tangible realm of existence), inside of several other nightmares. Never change Fromsoft.

The first time I fought him was my first Bloodborne playthrough. It took all of my blood vials, but I somehow beat him first try. My heart was pounding.
Gerry Buckets heh, me too, I almost deleted DS2 after two hours into it, but decided to keep playing it a bit more.... Best decision ever! I went from serious skeptic of the series to a new, hardcore fan 😁
Souls games just have everything I like in a game, they're close to perfection
Gerry Buckets yes! Same here! At first it may be frustrating, like you start in a place with no signs, map or anything indicating where you should go.. Then there's the combat, I had no idea when to dodge properly nor about the importance of using shield and watch out for the stamina bar.. Sometimes I would think that either my controller or the game itself were broken becaise sometimes I'd try to swing the sword at an enemy and my character simply wouldn't move at all.. Lol only later on I'd started figuring thinga out, especially during the Pursuer fight, when I finally equipped a shield and begun getting the gist of how stamina and dodging work. From then on, my love of DS started growing to the same level as my love of Metroid, Castlevania and other favorite franchises! Like you said, the game doesn't hold your hand or spoonfeed you with silly tutorials and clues. Every single battle is brutal and risky, and this prevents the game from getting boring to me! The vast number of weapons, shields, armors, rings, each of which having its purposes, strong and weak points, just like the enemies have weakness against a type of attribute, in addition to the interconnected locations with varying landscapes, overall design and traps, makes it seem like you are playing several games in one! You're stuck in a place/boss? No problem, take a different route, grind for more souls, find/upgrade new weapons and come back later when you're more confident and powerful, prepared to tackle the boss you're stuck on! Currently I'm stuck at the spider boss, so I decided to go back and went down the Gutter, beat the Rotten boss, then headed to Harvest Valley, beat the 3 Skull bosses, then I beat the Baneful Queen, had access to the Iron Keep, got my ass beaten, ran to the Drangleic castle, got my ass beaten again lol. So, there it is, 3 different routes to go through, which I can easily choose which one to go at any time I want, very very cool experience.. I still shake my head at how I missed out this great franchise for so long due to ignorance and prejudice of DS games.. Always dismissed them as dumb, boring RPGs..

There's something about this that... It resonates with "Horror genre done right." Indeed, the emergence of the orphan is visceral, disgusting even... But what's disturbing is the concept, the vagueness. It emerges, looking at the sky, weeping. It attacks, screaming what sound like desperate and painful screams as a solemn and angelic melody plays in the background.
It's been a long time since i've been able to find something to associate horror and beauty together.
Honestly the way it cries at the end of the first cutscene is perfect horror in my opinion

There were parts where I was legit scared to progress in this game, like if I was playing a horror game, something I never experienced in any Dark Souls game.

Don't want to be that guy, but he was honestly the easiest boss in the whole game, is he really considered a hard boss? I got my ass handed to me every other boss but he was genuinely really easy, never had killed a boss second try.

I remember one of the times I fought this boss. I got off so many successful parries in phase one and I got to phase two with 19 blood vials left. Orphan was two hits from death, and I dodged incorrectly to one of his jump attacks and it killed me. You all don’t know the amount of hatred and sadness I had in that moment in time.

I feel so sad for the orphan of kos when he screams for the lightning. He woke up and found his mom dead and then he turns around to the hunter whom reeks of death. He attacks with anger and soon finds himself outmatched. He screams to the heavens for help in great pain as the hunter beats him mercilessly. Rest in peace sweet child of kos, you have suffered enough.
The Commissar one idea is that the hamlet we visit is basically the orphans safe space. He isn’t being born in the game instead he was chilling inside the only place he felt protected and was forced to come out.

@@thecommissar4461 Keep in mind this all takes place inside the hunters nightmare, this is not the same plane of reality that (most) of the main game takes place in, where the Orphan was already killed by Brygenwerth who also pulled an all out genocide on the fishing Hamlet, this whole thing is basically all the horrors of the past that manifested themselves into a separate plane of existence created by the memories of these horrors and held together by the grief of the Orphan and the guilt of the old hunters.

I bought this game 5 years after it came out,it's so good. The Moment when the orphan stands at the moon and has an initial cry as a baby,but after a second becames the desperation of an old man with the sadness of a heart-broken new-born child.

Fun fact: Gehrman and the Orphan both use the same sobbing sound, and the Doll even tells you that Gehrman is a bit more at ease with himself after you kill the Orphan. This has interesting and terrifying implications.
The sobbing is merely a reused asset, the fact Gehrman is at ease after you kill Orphan is because his actions at the Fishing Hamlet have been haunting him since and knowing every Hunter (including himself) is now free from Kos' curse of course gives him peace.
Makes sense: The Orphan is the representation of Gehrman's sins.

trust me, he does make OnS look like a cakewalk (unless you use meta weapons like the pizza cutter). A youtuber did a statistical ranking and his stats exceeded the algorithm and the difficulty meter ended up being 10.53 out of 10!

Pulverizing attack patterns aside, this is an excellent boss. The arena is large and doesn’t have any stupid objects that will stop your dodges, the atmosphere is incredible, and it was super satisfying to beat.

There is something about 2:20 that always gets me.
Must be the combination between the Orphan's scream of despair and the music, but that little moment always brings a tear to my eyes.
Even now whenever I boot up a new game of Bloodborne, this is a boss that I do not *want* to fight. Not because it's hard, but because of how utterly distressed it makes me feel to just be in its presence. The fact that hunters like the player, in our lust for blood and knowledge, created such a cruel and tortured entity is a terrifying reminder of the horrors brought on not just by the nightmares of the Cosmos, but of the ones created by humanity itself.
The only solace this fight brings me is knowing that I can bring its suffering to an end. After all, the one good thing a hunter can do is kill a few beasts. It's just what hunters do.
This for me was not only the hardest boss in Bloodborne and it's DLC but probably the hardest boss out of all the souls games. By the time the DLC came out I was around NG+7 (I don't remember which NG+ I was at, but definitely where they cap the difficulty), and dear god I bit off more than I could chew. His attacks are so ridiculously hard to dodge, he is relentless with his attacks, it took me at least 100 tries before I beat this guy solo and let me tell you it was one of the proudest moments I ever had playing a video game.

Sure Orphan is really hard but in BB the dodging mechanism is much better than in other dark souls games(kind of like in nioh) and its much stronger than theirs.
