The remarks at the end around "Learn the Functions" are so true!! Can save you so much time when starting out.
It has saved a lot of time for me for sure!
this is what i was missing in my DAX journey!!! contect, a birds eye view of DAX... thank you this is absolutely brilliant and will help me so much!!!
Wish this video was there couple years back when I was starting with DAX and PBI. So useful for someone coming from Excel / Database background. Thanks for taking the time to create this Ruth.
I went to several videos searching for this information presented in a way that was easy and logical to learn, your ability to explain things is remarkable, thanks so much.
You sure know how to pinpoint my struggle with understanding these basics. You've cleared up a lot for me!
Thank you Ruth for teaching me about Measures :) Learning about the need for an aggregator helps clear up some confusion I had in the past.
You make it so easy to follow like chatting with a close friend, unlike other lectures which are kind of boring. Thank you so much!
Thanks 😊!
Just what I need to know. You certainly saved me a lot of time figuring out those facts about DAX querries and DAX formulas. Thank you a lot!
💥Great!!! Glad to hear :)
/Ruth
Thanks for this amazing introduction , I am getting excited to deep dive into DAX .
This was SO helpful, Ruth. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge on this. This half hour provides a giant head start when beginning to apply DAX functions.
Knowing that my mistakes or misunderstandings makes things clear for others, makes it all worth it. Thanks for sharing!
Starting out my DAX journey here - today. I love the positive energy and also the genuine enthusiasm in the subject. Hopefully I "learn the functions" and also start "loving the functions."
You will!
Mothers are doing work easier for their children and here I felt the same. The way you teach and represent everything is just phenomenal .Take love and respect from India. Thank you so very much. Waiting for more new contents.
I just love and admire your ability to communicate difficult and cool stuff. Sooo, how cool is that :-)
That is amazing!! Thanks for the feedback :)
/Ruth

OMG if only would have seen this video one year ago... It would have saved me so much struggle!
I wish there would have been a video like this when I started my Power BI journey! Very useful information. Have a great weekend!
Same to you and thanks for the feedback!
/Ruth
Hands down, the best teacher of PowerBI topics!
Thanks!
/Ruth
Awesome video. Your approach to explain is so great and didactic! You definitely have a new fan here. Thanks Ruth!!!
Thanks Carlos!
1:44 and I am hooked on the content!!!! I am just starting out too and I had no idea there is even a difference between DAX Formula and DAX Query.... Thank you for taking your time to do this video!!
DAX is a box of chocolates .... 😉
Great Video! Thank you so much. I've learned so much and you are such a great inspirational teacher. You make learning DAX fun and exciting and you teach us from your own experience and that's so important. I feel like when I watch your video's you are talking to me directly...so cool. ❤👏💯
❤❤❤
/Ruth
Your presentation is so relaxed and real, ie you suffer the same issues the learners have. This is far more useful and encouraging than a "here is the formula and this is how it works". Thank you
☺️
Thank you for explaining so clearly. 😍👍🏾
Hi Ruth great video ,very well explained also another point on measures that I learn over my past hands on work in pbi is that we can build a measure over another measure 😊✌️
Ruth, thanks for encouragement, what an interesting video. Very well explained
Thanks :)
/Ruth
Ruth gracias por informar y compartir tus conocimientos
Thank you Ruth. You correctly said " Practice and love you DAX functions".
It makes sense now, but if somebody told me that when I got started... don’t think I would have listened 😂😂😂
/Ruth
Heya, I'm on contract at the moment creating power BI reports and I had to laugh at 24:00 . I don't many times I say out loud "my shits broken" . Great vid either way. I was a heavy excel user before I jumped on power BI so all your stories make perfect sense to me and its nice to know I wasn't the only one confused as hell to start with!
😂😂😂 i feel you!!
My shit was broken all the time too!!!
/Ruth
This is incredibly helpful as a person who is used to dealing with Excel, this is the bridge I need to get my head around DAX!!! thank you Ruth (L)
So glad I made this video!! Happy Friday!
Thank you, Ruth for the down to earth tutorial.
Thanks for the feedback :)
/Rutg
I am a beginner of Power BI.. This video really cleared many of my doubts. Very nicely explained difference between Measure, Column and table . Loved it !
Excellent, glad to hear :)
Thanks for that! You come across as such a nice and spontaneous person! Keep up the good work!
Thanks for sharing your view of measure. Regards
It makes things more clear, thank you!
Glad to hear!
/Ruth

Muchos saludos Claudio :)

My favorite consulter
Thanks and Happy Friday!

/Ruth
BIG Thanks . this series helps me so much.
🥳
/Ruth
Thank you so much! This is great information!
Thank you! Great work. Subscribed
Thank you for amazing videos.
i am beginning to fall in love with you and your channel.
Thank you for explaining this so clearly... You are explaining this from your experiences and mistakes, thats a great way of teaching.... Coming to my question, @7:50, its about calculated column. Is it getting calculated, formula is run, during the time of report loading or its already calculated and kept as part of the dataSet? My understanding was, its the measures which is getting calculated on the fly and hence its not part of the dataSet for sure.
I love you so much. I just subscribed after watching your single video. You rock.
Welcome!
So useful video and glosary Ruth!!. 1000 Tks!!
Knowing that this video is helpful to somebody else makes me over-the-moon-happy, because this is the video I wish I saw when I started with DAX :)
I can not help my past-self but I am extremely proud if it helps others start their DAX journey easier!
Thanks for sharing :)
/Ruth
Finally understand how many times i am lacking the aggregator 😂😂. Good vid Ruth
Oh! Then it was worth the effort to make it, that was exactly what I was hoping to accomplish. Thanks for sharing!
/Ruth
Very informative for beginner ... Thank you very much
My pleasure :)
first time coming across your channel, great stuff!!!

Ruth, thank you very much for this interesting video. Very useful as usual 👍🏻🙋🏼♂️
Thanks Andy! Hope you are doing well :)
/Ruth
Curbal yes actually really good 😉 you know, this could be the start of a training course for Dax/power bi. Actually is easy understandable for none it specialist like me and easy to follow .. you definitely should make some follow up videos for beginners.
🙋🏼♂️
They take a bit longer to prepare but when time allows, I will definitely do that :)
WoW.. Such a great video!!!!
It's very comforting to know that Ruth can get confused and frustrated. I don't feel so bad now. I supposed however that confusion is simply an opportunity to learn.
Wise words! Also if it is too easy.,,.where is the fun?? ;)
/Ruth
Oh my God why did I not discover this channel before!!
Welcome!!
thank you for this and your time
Happy to help :)
/Ruth
Really like your teaching style .. : )
Thanks!
Hi Curbal Nice presentations!!!I've seen some of your tutorial and now I deceded to start again from the number 1; And the first question caming automatically; As you said on excel colums, we write the formula on the first cell and than double click on the right lower corner and the formula wer propagated for all the colum, Now in dax if I want to do the same is easiest but how shall I do if I want comparate a cell of a rows n or n-1?? I mean if the resoult of a cell depending on the previous rows?
Amazing workd, Do you have a video or somehhing that asnwer. Why dosen't it recalculate with NewTable(Dax-uttryck för att skapa en tabell) when i cange the year in the table that is the sourse of the dax-table. PS I use the table to be able to group by and sum up that groupby. I know that it have no relation direct to other table but its generated by a special table, and that table i have a date that i want to use but the generated table dont change
Good morning (Brazil time hahaha) @Ruth! I hope you're doing well. I don't need to say this, but ok, I'll hehehe! A M A Z I N G class! Thanks a lot again.
Now, taking this as an opportunity, it would be great great if you could create more videos using CALCULATED TABLE inserted in some daily scenarios (Finance, Sales, Accounting etc). What do you think? Is it great? Maybe a new playlist / serie just talking about Calculated Tables. Thanks again and have a wonderful week.
Good morning and thanks a LOT!!!
Have a great day :)
I definately need to do more videos on calculatetable, probably after the summer holidays (they take lInger to do)
/Ruth
Insightful!... Is there a video where you explain why measure must have a function wrap around the column... the columnar database part did not quite get it... cheers!
U have actually created interest to learn DAX rather than fear
Wonderful to hear!
i like you and your videos such a clear and good explanation compare others
Dear.. regards from Uruguay!! i just subscribed to ur channel!!! En hora buena!!!
Bienvenido!!
/Ruth
Gain more knowledge on watching this video and feel happy .thanking you I hope you share more videos in feture.
Glad to hear ! Have a great weekend :)
/Ruth
Thank you, this video is so refreshing and full of light, for a technical subject such as DAX. I really learn more from you than sitting on a 2-hour DAX training video. One Question, can you tell name name of the application you use to do your videos where you appear on the screen along with the computer screen?
Camtasia, I have also a discount code if you need it.
@@CurbalEN yes. Let me take a look and will let you know on discount code. Thank you so much!
Great thanks
Hello hope you could help me on this one: I have a very simple long and thin fact table (with 3 columns: date, text descriptor and corresponding numerical values). I just want to filter data (for example: descriptor 1 with corresponding values) against range of another data (descriptor 2 and corresponding values). In clear I want the values of my descriptor 1 when values of descriptor 2 is in a specific range (10-20, 20-30, …, 90-100). I am stuck since one month…
Each descriptor comes from different source tables where everything was in a lot of columns (headers: date, descriptor 1, descriptor 2, …, descriptor 350. The cells below are all numerical values). I had to unpivot other columns than the date to be able to use it in the data model.
I also have a lookup table that categorizes and sub-categorizes the descriptors and also min and max targets for each descriptor.
How can I do that please?
Thank you..
Good work. Very informative and digestible material. I notice you tend to move your hands a lot as you speak and sometimes this can have an impact on the sound (on my headphones it can come off as a loud bass noise). I look forward to watching more of your videos and sharing them with my colleagues.
Sorry Mantis, I am spanish and half of what I say, is on body language. Hope it is not too disturbing for you as this is something I can not fix ;)
/Ruth
Great explanation! Quick question, I noticed you made distinctions between DAX Query and DAX Formulas, is DAX Query same as M Query (Power Query)? Or are those completely different things?
They are completely different!
m.czcams.com/video/t_65m9edkyI/video.html
/Ruth
You are the best
You too!
QUESTION: The start of the video differentiates DAX queries vs DAX formulas. But both of these are DAX functions correct? So is DAX queries, DAX formulas and DAX functions all interchangeable words or different? Thanks.
thank you.
My pleasure,
/Ruth
Hi ruth,i have one question .My requirement is store list of values in one variable and loop those items on that list.It is possible in power Bi.
Havent done it before, check with power bi community to see if somebody has.
/Ruth
Muy buena la explic ación, pero me parece que la base que compartes no es la del video, podrías actualizarla o en todo caso enviarme otro enlace? Te lo agradezco.
Hello Ruth!! At last I found the perfect video to start with DAX, after scratching my head when I am into this. Thanks for making me understand the difference while using DAX for calculated columns and measures. This made me literally mad.
I have a question to you. What is the difference between DAX functions and the functions that we create using => symbol?
Hi Vigneshwar,
You mean the difference between DAX functions and Power Query functions?
@@CurbalEN yes exactly
Functions in dax and in power query can do the same things, the trick is to know when to use which:
m.czcams.com/video/t_65m9edkyI/video.html
/Ruth
@@CurbalEN Oh ok. Again Thanks a lot for your great tutorial!!
How can I write code for creating a custom button?
The reason for the error @ 24 mins is because you picked the discount column from the wrong table - its why I avoid using the same column names if I can!
Thanks for letting me know! No time to check that out. Happy Friday!
/Ruth
I knew before I watched that this was good. I shall now pat myself on pat myself on the back for being right. 👍
Thanks Mary !!!
/Ruth
Enjoyed the video a lot. But you didn't talk about data modelling or relationships. That is where it all starts looking different for people who are coming from traditional Excel (one big table) world. May be you are planning to include that in later parts of '101' video series.
The video was already 30min longs so better to split them :)
Happy Friday!
/Ruth
18:10- calculated column
19:34- new measure
24:13- calculated tables
Thanks!
Can you please make a playlist.. very difficult to find the videos
There are tons of playlists available, please check
Ruth, I totally fell in love with you!
Ruth, Nice discussion.
Many people will be in the same bucket by now and I am one of them.
I see DAX studio as my friend to learn DAX visually. But whenever you copy the DAX code from DAX studio to the data model to build extra columns or tables, the DAX code is not useful as it is and you need to make changes to see the intended cols or tables. It is always confusing on what it should be wrapped with to see the resultant tables or columns, could you do a video on this..?
We all know one can simply copy and paste code in the Edit DAX tab in Power Pivot and you can see a table or columns. But when you want to use this resultant tables as intermediate tables, you need to make some changes as you can't use them as it is. So please throw some light on that. Thanks from India.
I use power bi to see the intermediate tables and do all my DAX so I am not sure I know what the best practice is for Dax studio, but I will give it a go when I get some time over :)
/Ruth
Me, LIKEY!!!! Thanks a LOT.
🥳🥳
She is soooo nice!!!!
so is disconnected table is calculated table
Why Power Query over DAX for Calendar Table?
Check this one:

please need the name of video maker program
Camtasia is great,
