      I hope things with CZcams get sorted out, it’s so not fair!
      And to make more time I definitely say, don’t waste too much time with social media and apps. It could feel like you’re there for 5 min but actually 30 minutes went by and you did nothing. So, that’s the main thing, I think.

      Yeah, I also hope the monetization thing gets worked out soon. It’s really unfortunate that that happened.
      I would say having your priorities straight is the biggest thing for me. You don’t want to feel guilty for sitting down and sewing when you have something more important to do, but you also don’t want to waste your day away working on something less important (to you) and end up not sewing at all.

      I've always tried to have a needlework project on hand I take along with me. There are so many times when one goes about their day or errands that something goes away or comes up an you find yourself have to wait an have nothing to do while you wait. Having a small project on hand comes in handy helps with ones patience an creates time to sew, crochet, knit, mend. The time isn't wasted an you get work accomplished.
      If I have a skirt that needs some patching but it is still wearable I will add patches throughout that time I find throughout the day while those times of waiting on others or on the bus or the doctor what have you. I embroidered a skirt I was wearing in those types of moments as well. Just be careful of losing the needle while wearing it.

    When people read 50 books a year ppl wonder how, but it's the 10 minutes in line, or during lunch, or audiobooks doing the dishes.. it's the "anytime I can" mentality instead of setting aside that ever elusive "free hour"

    • @VBirchwood
      @VBirchwood  Před 2 lety +2

      Exactly! It's making time and choosing to pick up the book, needle & thread, yarn and hook, paint brush, whatever it might be and spending a bit of time on the thing here and there or during a specifically scheduled duration (like the 30 mins-1 hour each day) and choosing how to break that chunk of time up whenever there's a moment during life.

    I really miss sewing groups, and the friendly chatter of others whilst I sew. I usually watch videos yo keep me company during crafting, sewing, or chores.

    Concur with what you said about listening to something! I listen to podcasts even before I got into handsewing. I've been listening to podcasts less however, when online classes started because I barely have energy for them left after a day full of zoom classes. But ever since I got into sewing, idk why but doing something with my hands gives me enough energy to be able to enjoy podcasts again, and now I'm getting a lot of sewing done on top of being able to listen to loads of podcasts again.

    Good montage! I spent a great chunk of my life working two full time jobs to support family. I learned that if I had an hour off, to not waste any of it on worries or thinking about the fact that it was only an hour. I still work 50 hours a week doing taxes and books, so very stressful; again I'm the only breadwinner. But I also turn about about two books a year, one a graphic novel with 200 pages of drawings. I also sew, a lot. But I sew in silence. I need the silence. I stream when I'm doing tedious work on accounting! The silence is like meditation and it builds the soul. I'm usually wiped out by the end of the day, so I get up a 4 am to draw. Sewing and my garden are for the weekend. I've found that forgetting about the projects is the only way to get through sewing. You just sew and don't think about finishing. But I also learned that we all have vast hidden reserves of strength that we don't know about until we are pushed. When I was was working 170 hours a week, I learned to get past a lot of my pain and hopelessness. Moms learn this, too, since there are no breaks and the day is endless. I think being kind to yourself is good, but being easy on yourself often leads to catering to the wolves in your own head. I've known so many people who got past that and now look back and realize that if they hadn't forced their way through the wolves, they'd still be in bed dreaming about ways to avoid everything. Be strong, kind, but strong. We all have that inside of us.

    • @VBirchwood
      @VBirchwood  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks so much A.R.! And thanks for sharing your story. I worked 80-90 weeks at one point, and now I'm working about 65-70 (though less since I'm posting fortnightly now), so I can definitely relate to what you're saying. I have no idea though how you survived 170 hours a week, wow!
      I definitely agree there's a time for strength and to push ourselves forward. I also think though for some people it's so challenging to think about pushing oneself because of perhaps perfectionism or putting too much pressure on oneself. I used to be like this, for instance, when I was a teenager, and I've had to work through a lot of the need to constantly be working and pushing myself to do more, even though I was doing plenty. It can be such a slippery slope sometimes. I guess ultimately it's about finding that balance. Knowing that your strength is there when you need to tap into it because of the stuff life throws at you, and then knowing too that one is doing enough regardless. It's like a compassionate strength in my mind, if that makes any sense haha.

    • @anieth
      @anieth Před 2 lety

      @@VBirchwood I agree, people are all over the place. I was driven, too, as a teen with a Tiger mom who put me in my first art show at 4 years old! I was a runaway because of it. But all in all, I think people are stronger than they think. I have learned to admire people who just kept trying. It's a hard world. There are times to hide and cry and times to just press on. Finding the balance is the trick, you're right about that!

I think people too often forget that practical skills like sewing can also be an outlet for creativity and can serve important functions to support mental health by approaching them with a lens of mindfulness and self care. Also, your sewing kit is so lovely. I recognized some of the tools, but not all. A little video showing it off and demonstrating how you use some of the more uncommon tools would be interesting 😊.

    I've been realizing the "push through resistance" recently. With one "do it anyways," that alone can create the momentum. I'm surprised it works and that I haven't known before. Waiting for the ultimate powerful divine inspiration to show up like a lightbulb might actually be wrong; we have to get the ball rolling first.

    • @VBirchwood
      @VBirchwood  Před 2 lety +1

      Totally agreed! Of course, there's that nice balance where we shouldn't overwork ourselves too, but I think that the divine inspiration often doesn't strike, and that's okay. It makes it all the more lovely when it does, but I think it's just an impossible expectation that artists place upon themselves - to be inspired and ready to create all of the time. No one can do that! 😂

    This video made me cry. 😭 Really. Guess, I'd love to have such a passion, too.
    Handcraft feels like it's about love. Loving what you are doing and loving also things, not just people. If we would have more love for things, too, I think, we would tread the world better. The environment, and also the handcraft of other people, that spend time on it. We would not produce so much waste and animals would not die because they eat synthetic garbage... Our houses would be built to last, this would safe a lot of CO2.. And so on. 😅

    I’d say it’s also fine to put a project in hibernation if it really is feeling too impossible to continue with it in spite of numerous attempts to push through it. Sometimes I just need to set something aside for a bit and work on something else like a different type of craft or a different craft for a bit. I recently picked up a Tunisian crochet project I had in hibernation for a few months but now I felt so excited for the change of pace from knitting socks and hand sewing a EPP bag that I decided to add more to the project. It’s almost done! Sometimes our brains need a break and that’s fine.

As I don't live there anymore my view of the Uk gets distorted by the hideous people commenting on the news feeds - I have little idea of what the UK is REALLY LIKE. Its hard to believe there are any nice people left living there if you just read the comments and watch the news...

    Another great video. Good words of wisdom there. Lately I have given into the need to write. I have had a story brewing in my mind that has been begging to get out. Normally this time of years I do list of sewing. I have felt a little guilty about neglecting my new sewing machine. But they story has been wanting to come out, so lately in my spare time, as much as I can get between life's daily needs, homeschooling my kids, and the homestead. Its bare root season which meant a lot of holes needed to be dug for trees to finish off our orchard. Especially since bare root season is so short here. I keep looking at the patterns in want to try my hand at, but they story keeps calling me. I think I will try to get back to my roots and see what I might be able to get done in the evenings durning our evening bible reading. I have a apron that I need to fix that I made new years eve. Ironically we lost power right at midnight and if didn't finish it until the next day. I wanted to use it the other day and realized it needed some help in a few places, so i think tonight I will spent the evening picking it apart. Then I will see about fixing some of the places where the seams didn't quite line up properly. That might help cure the conflict of wanting to see and got the story out of my head. 😉

    A nice video! For me it helps to have several projects going on. If one of them doesn’t inspire me one day, I’ll just continue another project and come back to the first one later. Although, it is good to know when not to stop. I know that if I don’t rip out that mistake, I don’t feel like picking up to project again. So, I’ll do the unravelling before putting away a project to rest!

    I have made a practice of setting a kind of 'resistance timer' for myself. I found the usual pomodoro method wasn't working well for me, so I got a 'visual timer' that is silent unless I tell it not to be. I commit to a certain minimum time to get into the task (at least twenty minutes, just to transition), and if I remain antsy, I will know when that timer is done, and I can stop. If, on the other hand, I get fully absorbed, I can dive in without being interrupted by an alarm and feeling like I have to make a *'decision'* on whether to continue.

  • @catherinejustcatherine1778

    I have not got very far in creative time management ( I do the things that have to be done *that* day, then create; and things that don't have to get done, haven't been done).
    I'm hoping to slowly change that, currently with a "motivational" journal/log book of accomplishments.

    Alright alright you talked me into it.. I have a pattern I bought last winter.. maybe and its a tshirt type but the fabric I have is jersey knit and I really didn't want to use that. but I think it would drape well..
    Actually its not a pattern for knits! Oh gesh... I have been putting it off all this time and it wasn't for knits.. Well the woven I have is muslin so I'll do the mock up of that and see how it behaves. But I need to trace the pattern and the sleeves on paper before I can do anything because there are i think 8 variations and I don't want to loose them.
    I am itching to work with natural fiber like linen and silk. Especially linen!

    Do you use a specific lut to color your videos?

    • @VBirchwood
      @VBirchwood  Před 2 lety +1

      For which part specifically? I have some LUTs I use, but then adjust them to be more stylistic or balanced in DaVinci, but for some of the colour I also just grade it manually with the help of scopes to make sure minimal colour info is lost. Mainly it helps to shoot in Clog so that way there's even exposure and more colour information saved in the file.

    • @CarolineElizabethMartin
      @CarolineElizabethMartin Před 2 lety

      @@VBirchwood ahh that makes sense. Your videos are beautifully colored. I find it hard to achieve super nice and consistent shots when lighting is so variable (day vs night) but shooting in c-log is a great tip. thank you

    • @VBirchwood
      @VBirchwood  Před 2 lety +1

      @@CarolineElizabethMartin Thanks so much! Clog will help a ton. Do you use DaVinci to grade your colour? I found myself feeling extremely limited with Premiere not only for colour but for editing eventually too, and so I switched to DaVinci back last summer. I find LUTs just interact so much better in DaVinci and there are far more tools to make sure your colour info is as present as possible. Also boosting saturation using their colour web tool is helpful, and then if you notice one colour group is too bright, grouping those and decreasing those. For the shots sitting in my living room in this video, for instance, I took a LUT that had quite muted colours, and then on the colour web I boosted certain groups, especially greens for instance. I felt there was too much red though, so I decreased that and just made sure everything was within the graph when checking the scopes feature. I also almost always shoot at night with a studio lighting set up, so this helps a lot for consistent lighting between shots, and then also having a UV filtre for your camera can help a lot to make it more customisable.
