Terminal to terminal rides are free. Only if you exit to one of the subways such as Howard Beach or Jamaica Station then you need to pay $8.00 when you exit the air train. You can buy the metrocard from the booth or machine. However if you don't already have a metrocard you will be charged $1 for the new card. My advice is if you don't want to pay the $8+$1 you can take Q10 bus at Lefferts Blvd air train station to Lefferts Blvd A train subway station if you are not carrying a lot of luggage. This gets tricky so please pay attention. In order to board the Q10 bus at Lefferts air train station you need to use a metrocard. Like most people if you don't have a metrocard you would travel to Howard Beach station where you can buy a metrocard from the machine or the clerk. Currently the one-way fare with a transfer is $2.75. A weekly pass is $33. After you get your metrocard ride one stop back to Lefferts Blvd go downstairs then take the Q10 bus to Lefferts Blvd A train. You get a free transfer when you use the card on the Q10 bus. Of course if you're just transferring to another terminal such as Terminal 1 to Terminal 4 then it's free and nothing else applies.
