    A few reminders, TIMECODE is not a replacement for a proper slate, often we will use both in commercial / network tv work. You also want to match up your frame rate across all your devices and be specific, 24fps is not the same as 23.976 or 23.98.

    Nice trick, for FIncal CUt PRo users; keep in mind Sony cameras record video in MP4 which doesn`t wrap metadata, so no timecode embedded, so Final Cut Pro X wont take that timecode unless you import it straight from the SD to the FCPX project (FCPX then would wrapd the MP$+TC in a .MOV)

    Great video... quick industry gripe. Camera makers keep selling us yesterdays stuff. 18 years ago I setup a lab test that needed highly accurate time. We built a timeserver that used time from GPS satellites. I haven't heard of it being done for cameras, but cameras could easily do this. Especially those that have a GPS receiver... Otherwise an external GPS chipset could be connected. And only real argument against a GPS chipset is maybe power consumption. They're like the size of end of your pinkie finger now, heck you get watches with GPS now. Then you can sync to atomic clocks in satellites all based off GMT. All equipment with a receiver that costs pennies, maybe dollars at most. No need to sync up otherwise with cables and a bunch of BS. I think most of us are ready for this. When is Sony, Panasonic, Canon, etc going to do it?

    • @schurrwrestlr125
      @schurrwrestlr125 Před 6 lety +1

      The timecode is arbitrary. You can set the start to anything, but make sure both cameras have the same exact start, and when you push the set button for them both at the same time, there will most likely be some frame difference. So yeah, just scoot it over in post and you're golden.

    Heya Josh! I'm a little confused by this. Basically what I want to do is synchronise audio from my Digital Audio Workstation (Logic, Reaper, Cubase, etc.) with the footage I record using my Sony a7iii.
    How is this best done? Do I need something like the Tentacle sync, and if so, how does it work??
    Most DAW's can generate SMPTE, MMC, and MTC. I assume that MTC is what I would need to use?

    • @PianoGesang
      @PianoGesang Před 2 lety

      You have to sync the audio manually by comparing the peak level meters. The method explained above is for syncing video/audio on several cameras not between one camera and your DAW. Given that the latter is most likely not part of the shooting process.

  • @InMission
    @InMission Před 5 lety

    Well, one big issue I find in this camera (A7III), is that it only have hours and minutes, so for recording one can use time code, terrific, but for stills it sucks, we can't properly sincronize our cameras, specially if the other shooter use a different brand, like Nikon for instance. I use to have Nikon, and we are able to sincronize it down to seconds, or milliseconds, don't remember properly, but hey, from seconds to minutes, Huge difference. Do you know if there's anything we can do on Sony to do that?
    Thanks.

    Thanks for the vid but the timecode seems to get lost after importing to Lightroom and then into FCPX. It seems the Sony files structure has to be maintained exactly, in order to preserve timecode. Where is TC actually stored and how to include it into my normal import workflow?

    • @LanzaroteShowcase
      @LanzaroteShowcase Před rokem

      The metadata is lost if you import the mp4 and XML files only. Aparantly you have to import direct into fcpx from the card. This is a pain as you are then stuck with useless named files just numbers...

  • @MrCoffis
    @MrCoffis Před 4 lety

    would be easier if you could sync the cameras with real time through your phone that way you wouldnt need to press record at the same time. Just hit record whenever and everything would be in sync with 1/100 -1/1000 of second accuracy. I dont know if that is possible with the current software though

  • @ahriik
    @ahriik Před 2 lety +3

    Have you tested this yourself on a full-day, professional shoot? I can't imagine this method would be at all precise. Even if you *could* somehow reset the TC of all your cameras at the same time (most likely impossible, too much room for human error, especially if you are doing it with another person or several), the clocks in these mirrorless cameras like the GH5 or A7SII/III are just too imprecise - they WILL drift, even two cameras of the same model. They are not TCXO clocks, most likely just a simple digital clock to give you a general idea of time of day for your photo metadata. Even if the cameras were to stay relatively in-sync (or off-sync, but in the same fashion), they certainly would not be able to sync up with a proper audio field mixer and timecode generators attached to other cameras, meaning the whole point of "being able to take bigger jobs because you have timecode* is moot.
    The only way to get proper TC into one of these mirrorless cameras without a dedicated TC input (GH5S included, the TC jam in that is only momentarily, before immediately going back into the unreliable digital clock) is with continuous Audio-TC coming from something like a Tentacle Sync or Ambient Lockit, like you mentioned at the end, that has already been jammed with a master clock, like from a sound mixer for example.
    I just hope no one sees this and thinks they can actually start advertising that their camera has timecode to potential clients, because no serious sound mixer would take them seriously. If you don't have a Tentacle or Lockit, just get a decent camera-mounted shotgun and sync with waveforms.

      Download Resolve 14 (Free) , there is a way to sync based on timecode in there. Then batch export all your footage as new files. That would be my answer for syncing random footage that I didn't have a project in mind for. Hope this helps......There is another method that I use, but it would require you to shoot with a piece of hardware with that old footage and thats using Tentacle sync or ambient Nano lockits. They have a software that marries the audio and timecode audio together into a new file as a batch export.

    Problem is the A7S timecode drifts during longer shoots. Just be aware an hour in, your timecode will probably be off. Know that from experience.

      Hi Scott, could you explain more on this. I own an A7s2 and i wanted it to have timecode for easy workflow between Premiere and Resolve

      @@HecProman we have tried to jam timecode on big shoots, once set, when rolling longer intvws, we notice the timecode will drift. The longer we recorded, the more it drifted. Now it isn’t much of a drift, but will not sync up with other timecode. Just found slating or clap works better for our workflow. Now I might try it again with newer firmware update just to see if they fixed that issue.

    Like your videos and style. I think CZcams algorithm “punishes” your swearing. You should definitely have more viewers coz the quality of your videos so maybe try to avoid fu** word and similar. Sorry just my 2 cents

    Something wrong with the audio in some of your videos, a very high ferquance noise, like ultra sound.....

    Thanks for letting me know that timecode is important. Unfortunately, you spent more time in this video scrunching your eyebrows and trying to sound or look cool then you spent actually explaining very much at all. You just whipped through all the names for things jumped into a couple of menu settings and pretended like you were actually explaining anything to us at all. I could tell by your second fake forehead scrunch that this whole video was going to be a waste of time. However, I went ahead and watched most of it anyway just proved to myself that I was right.
