  • Writer's Analysis - The Hollywood Problem and Hazbin Hotel
    Let's be honest, Hollywood has taken over nearly ever facet of the storytelling industry. From book publishing to comics, to music to cartoon shorts, companies and individuals everywhere hope that they can one day make it to Tinsel Town and become famous by adapting their hard work into a beloved film or show. It's basically the new American Dream! However, there are many deep-rooted problems for novice writers and new creators. As we can begin to see in a show like Hazbin Hotel, Hollywood loves underdog stories, but they hate working underdogs. Interestingly, this show which made a big splash is getting almost no buzz or accolades from Hollywood. In this video, Lars explores why and what problems that begins to pose for all of us creatives.

    Hollywood has always snubbed animation. I mean it wasn't until 1991 that we even had an animated movie get nominated for best picture outside of best animated movie let alone win best picture. Best animated picture was literally made so that the Oscar's and, by extension, Hollywood could just bush it under the rug as just for children. It's also why some adults get floored when they see an animated show or movie that shows things like blood, gore, death, has swears, etc because they have been fed this belief that if it's animated it's for kids when animation could be for kids, adults, or everyone

    • @camillesharem
      @camillesharem  Před 2 měsíci +5

      Hollywood's message that animation is just for kids runs too deep. Heck, most of the older cartoons were meant to be specifically enjoyed by all ages! Give me back the old Hanna Barbara days...
      It's a shame that Hollywood will never give animation it's fair due, which is why I find it appropriate that indie animation is eating their lunch and capturing the younger demographics they say are impossible to hook.

    You know the “Animation is a dying medium” statement really baffles me. It practically created a huge part of the Prime Age (the era of awesome shows from the 90s-2010s, as I like to call it😊)
    It’s like they ignore all the adults who prefer animation to live action. Nowadays animation doesn’t get the respect it deserves. Especially newer shows.
    And the people that complain that Hazbin Hotel is g for kids just make me laugh. It’s like they don’t read the mature warning

    • @camillesharem
      @camillesharem  Před 2 měsíci +10

      Indie animation is finally doing what studio animation was poised to do but never followed up with: push the boundaries!
      I agree, 90s to the 2010s is absolutely a golden age of animation and storytelling. The fact that bigwig studios turned their backs on the medium will come back to bite them in the butt. But it's something they don't want to understand. And I think it's because it's a medium that executives cannot as easily control as live action. There's a whole crazy story there! Maybe I'll dive into that in the future.
      As for people not paying attention to the mature warning label, it's not that they're lazy. No, it's even worse. Sorry to drag WDW Pro and pals again, but they always say that they just want entertainment to plop their kids in front of and let it babysit them. And then they turn around and complain that children these days aren't raised right... Raise your kids yourselves! Spend that screen time with them! It'll be better that way!

      I find it very ironic that I'm now hearing more and more that McCarthy was right and that we should bring it back... Dumb people looking for revenge. But Hollywood hasn't had to tighten its belt in two generations, and they are too full of themselves without letting any outside ideas in. As a result, they won't accept that independent animators and storytellers actually have something to contribute to their craft and industry! It's really sad to watch play out.

    This is why Hollywood is failing and independent creators are outbeating them.
    May we remind them ever since 2020 Hollywood couldn't do live action stuff due to the pandemic, and if it weren't for animation Hollywood would've fallen apart in 2020 with the rest of the studios.
    It's like Hollywood isn't even paying attention to reality anymore🙄

      They haven't appreciated for years now that animation can be a real saving grace. Animated films don't often make the BIG bucks, which is partly why Hollywood studios snub them. However, consistent, good storied cartoon features draw audiences and provide all kinds of opportunities for revenue outside of the theaters. That's what keeps anime afloat!
      Hollywood needs to get that through their heads...

    Also it’s interesting that you should bring up how Christians are talking about this show, because as one myself, I see it as a story LOSELY based off of Biblical lore. And while I don’t agree with all of the show’s themes, I don’t really see it as “anti-Christian,” if that makes any sense. Also the characters are neat and the ost SLAPS.

    • @camillesharem
      @camillesharem  Před 2 měsíci +4

      The music is awesome! But also, when it comes to animation, it was the critics of the day when Snow White premiered that said that animation was for everyone! My dad sent me an email a few weeks back about the premiere of Snow White and what critics wrote. Walt Disney would weep to see how people in his own company regard the medium today!
      And speaking from a religious and teaching perspective, for more mature Christian viewers, I view Hazbin Hotel as a great teaching opportunity. "Alright, this is what the show draws on from apocryphal writings and lore, but why doesn't it line up with our values and beliefs? How can you respectfully communicate that to others who might have questions?" Throwing up a wall because a show doesn't adhere to your personal values cuts you off from a myriad of opportunities! Granted, this show isn't for everyone, but it really isn't anti-Christian.

    Anyway yeah Hollywood has a weird anti animation hate boner but tbh Hollywood as a whole lacks a lot of "life experience" and are unfamiliar with the universe outside their bubble. Its why all the Elite in entertainment and the media are part of the same club with the same bad takes.
    Recently the producer of Kung Fu Panda 4 talked about how executives don't understand the popularity of anime and manga and that something like Spider verse existing is basically a miracle.
    Basically like your past indie animation video on Digital Circus its conventional wisdom the teenage to young adult demographic is unreachable.....
    Except that's the exact demographic that anime and manga appeals to AKA the thing they don't understand.
    Basically Hollywood, Journalist, and Academia like to pretend they are enlightened and oprn minded not like those "bigoted right wingers."
    When they are just as close minded but worse because they are trying to position themselves as having an intellectual high ground.
    This is why sci fi and fantasy used to be hated by the academic world as not real literature back in the day btw.
