I had the pleasure of meeting Gligorić in 1972 and can attest that he was not only a great chess player, but a fine gentleman as well. Four of us -- Gligo, his friend Milan Vukcević (who was a FIDE master and a GM of chess problem composition), a local USCF master, and myself -- went to dinner. Gligorić had a fine sense of humor and he was gracious enough to make me feel like part of the group, even though I was a lowly Class B player.

GM Finegold is my all-time favorite chess commentator, by far, but I would like to make a little correction, to call "an unknown player" when talking about Antonio Medina Garcia is sort of a misunderstanding. IM Medina was 7 times Spanish Champion, in his long carrer he beat Alekhine, Euwe, Pomar( 7 or 8 times) Denker(twice) Szabo,O'Kelly(twice)Quinteros,Lombardy,Bisguier,Pfleger, Matulovic,Bent Larsen (in Larsen best overall year:1967, although Larsen was completely winning and missed a mate) Donner,Kurajica,Pal Benko(twice) and dozens of many other well known players (Matanovic,Ciocaltea,Julio Kaplan,Bednarsky,Hecht,etc.etc.) . He might be a far lesser player comparing him with Gligoric, but certainly not unknown! And last but not least, 16.Bd2 is not an error, in fact White is still better and there are several strong players's games with that move (including Korchnoi-Reshevsky 1-0) the errors came later.

  • @spartanthe300ththermopylae4

@GMBenjaminFinegold as a point of interest: not only was Gligoric a great player of KID with black, he is the "inventor" of, perhaps the most frequently played line of it, the Mar del Plata variation.
It really should be named after him; but, instead, it's named after the city where he first played it.

On Kingscrusher he calls an enemy pawn in front of your king an umbrella pawn (as in the Petrosian game) when your king can shelter behind it.

@Murray his legacy is legendary in Serbia and former Yugoslavia. He was easily among the top 5 - 10 players in the world at his peak, and he lived in the era of Botvinnik, Smyslov, Petrosian, Fischer, etc, to name but a few.
Another great Serbian player of the past which is not well known is Ljubomir Ljubojevic - a very energetic, attacking player. If you look up his games, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
