It sorta comes in and out a bit, but overall quite understandable. I am even more surprised that his mother’s Chinese sound better than Josh and also seems to be more fluent at it.
I'm surprised too, because generally you learn languages better at a younger age. But maybe it is because he went to an international school, where I presume they mostly spoke English, while she had to manage daily life in Chinese.
Well considering he is quarter Chinese and southeast Asian, I am proud he even bothered learning it and resonating with his grandma’s culture despite being majority British.
I'm am going to learn Arabic and I'm gotta made my kids speak it or In that case pass on pass generation because that Muslim do in Malaysia and Indonesia and Bangladesh and Pakistan

Maybe she was in a rural area where few people spoke English? If adults can get away with speaking in a language they are comfortable some of them will, so if someone has put in the time and effort to learn it is praiseworthy so yea I am surprised. I know people who live in a foreign country for 10+years and still don't speak the language

That's probably the only sentence I know how to say fluently in the languages I'm not fluent in (so that's all languages I've learnt in my life sans english🤭)
for someone who probably hasn't spoken chinese for many years, his chinese is very good. some intonations are wrong/off, but that could easily pass as a dialect, and the fact that it's been a really long time since he last spoke chinese. it's still easy to understand what he's saying, so big props to josh for managing to speak chinese for 24 hours.
Josh did extremely well for someone who has not been actively speaking Mandarin since he was a kid. There's a few grammatical errors but as a mandarin speaker, I could understand you fine and Mama Carrott's Mandarin is really good! Hahaha what language is next for the Carrott-Kook family?

I love this genuinely!! From this ep, I understand how nice it is for Korean and English culture to be integrated and explored on Korean Englishman, because I could understand the Mandarin this time around. Seeing you guys speak in Mando and eat Chinese food was really really nice because I'm so familiar with that.
