Connor: *loathes turn-based gameplay*
Also Connor: *adores Chess*
I think he was just really good at chess. From other Podcasts, he said he never took it seriously or was as passionate as his opponents. He played Pokemon while waiting for his turn in a tournament. Truly the monkey-brained anime antagonist.
*adores turn-based strategy
@@lukeamparo6586 But Pokémon is also turn-based
@@lukeamparo6586 The time he talked about relating to an anime where the protagonist was great at something but didn't care about it suddenly makes sense.
He's just never played a good turned based RPG.
People who play chess usually think 5, 10, 20 moves ahead and turn based RPG is usually "damage, damage, heal, damage, damage, heal"
But some turned based games have more meaningful choices. There's no "repeat your most powerful attack to win," but more about adapting to situations.
AS HE SHOULD! Tales of Arise is literally so good.
Why is the 'literally' necessary in this case? You look unbelievably stupid.
@@agneskennicott7851 Why are you insulting this person for something so minor?
so is the Tales Of Series itself is awsome
@@damarioclark4453 He probably has insecurities or something near that since there's absolutely no reason for his comment.
@@kazumahitoyoshi1401 nah, they're probably just that annoying type of person
This plot sounds like something I'd come up with after waking up from a dream that I just can't remember.
i hate how accurate this is
JRPG's in a nutshell lol.
@@709mash Garnt didn't even describe the plot OP is talking about High Rise Invasion
Connor says he hates turn based combat and yet he likes chess. Interesting...
his love for dominating opponents in competitions was greater than his hate for the game
Chess, the ultimate turn-based JRPG.
you don't miss attack randomly on chess tho
@@kulonone3374 so your luck stat is low
@@kulonone3374skill issue
Such a bizzare episode where Connor talked about anime plot and Garnt talked about game mechanics
I love turn-based combat. Sometimes I don’t want my brain firing on all cylinders all the time. I don’t want to have to have my reflexes and reaction time on 10. I enjoy finding an optimal strategy and then seeing it play out. It’s also super relaxing and a good change of pace.
Its basically a video game version of what I enjoy about playing board games, chess, cards, and all that.
Your profile picture is from a masterpiece
Oh its turn based i have no problems with that lol yakuza lad and dragon quest changed me
KOTOR 1/2 hits the sweet spot for me
@@makii4772 Yakuza 7 was phenomenal
you should play the caligula effect series then if you don't know about it. underrated game
Tales of arise is amazing, the whole journey was so good, I can see where he’s coming from
I just got it so hopes to that.
@Owenboy360 I thought it was still good after that personally but I can understand what you mean. I like the twist after lenegis and all that
Dark souls is better
@@Nsmnsd197 my dishwasher is better then dark souls
@@Nsmnsd197 what in the fuck lmao why even compare it to dark souls? Like can’t two things just be good without being compared? 😂 or because one game is good, no other game can possibly ever be good as well? 🤦🏻♀️
Tales of arise is so fun. My first exposure to the series.
If i wanna play this game, do i have to play other games from the Tales series?
@@toby3022 no. None of the “tales of” games are connected
@@spiderdude2099 thanks dude, last question...this game have some kind of romance? UwU
@@toby3022 I….I think, but I’m pretty sure it’s not like you have a say in the romance. You don’t pick who the MC falls for. It happens over the course of the story
I highly recommend playing Tales of Vesperia when you get the chance. Sure it's not as pretty as Arise but it's such a good game.
I competed Tales of Arise a couple days ago and I loved it. It’s a nice story with great characters and the combat is excellent. I definitely echo Garnt’s praise for it.
I read high rise invasion in nanga before it became an anime, and let me say, it is really good. Both the anime and manga, though the manga is more gore.
I have to agree, is really god
in my personal opinion, in the manga, the story progression is solid and in the anime, the story progression is rushed xD
True-the mangas way better tho
For me the manga was really disappointing and boring
yea I liked it too, was my very first manga
I platinum Tales of Arise and it was probably the most fun I've had with a game in a long while
But that's also because the Tales series is my favorite game series.
grant getting me into ToA is one of the best things to come from this podcast
Of the tales games, Graces, Zestiria, and Berseria are probably the "mashy" tales games discribed here because if you abuse the systems of the other games it's alot more combo oriented. Symphonia and Abyss are in an area where they aren't really mashy but also have hard built in "cooldown periods" that prevent strong combo's. Xillia had strong combo game with plenty of its swappable characters and the only real limits to your potential were knowing each characters special ability, how much MP you have, and how much of your burst meter you have. Vesperia was the previous "DmC" of rpg's but also takes a really long time to build up combo's because the necessary skills/abilities are locked behind weapons...in a jrpg where weapons are basically locked by story progress so you have to wait to do the much longer and hype combo's. Destiny (especially DC) was a really great middle area that had really strong combo potential and rpg mechanics, it was honestly almost built to feel like a fighting game (which I have to say alot of tales games have a "fighting game" feel) but never came to U.S.
Yeah I hate that Vesperia combat barely works for 15 hours and then at hour 70 its one the best in the series. I know they wanted an insane power curve but they went a little too hard on making the characters weak at the start
why's arise not in the mashy category? you literally always mash the same safe arte lmao
@@iransilva5857 you _can_ but you get hella hard diminishing returns if you keep spamming the same art. The first couple hours, when you’re mainly playing as Iron Mask with like 3 arts, can feel a bit mashy, but they still incentivize you to work on combos, filling up the boost break meter.
@@Blitz_Spencer lol they don't if you spam the same 2 artes or mash or whatever you still fill up the blue gauge and also mobs are a joke even on unknown.
Also artes don't do less damage if you spam them so reign slash spam is really easy to do and almost safe
@@iransilva5857 sure it works and is safe on dumb monsters you’re meant to breeze through, but good luck doing that on some of the harder fights. I’m in the middle of the playing the game on normal and some bosses give me trouble, not just the story ones.
Oh man Connor needs to watch gameplay of the really old Tales games where every character's "special attack" was a cut scene that would pause combat AND you could get to the point where your characters would just chain those attacks non-stop until the enemies die such that you basically weren't even playing the game anymore and instead just watching cut in attacks.
that was so fun
Tales still does that. It's just now they're only a few seconds
Isn't that just Zesteria and Berseria MA spam? Were there other games like that?
Garnt really hit the nail in the head when he mentioned it’s a game where you don’t want the journey to be over. It took me a while to get around to beating it but I couldn’t let this game fall off my radar to complete it.
I remember when Ganabelt does his "INDIGNATIONNN!" in the japanese dub (by no less than Jôji Nakata) and all I can think about is "man, so this is what Zouken felt like being utterly EXORCISED by Kirei's Kyrie Eleison"
Such a stupid DPS check. You can't do it outside of story difficulty.
@@chaseong9560 It's not impossible, I beat it on Hard difficulty my first try. I do agree it's a bad DPS check boss though. It's nearly impossible to prevent Indignation from happening.
As a Jade Curtiss fan, my thoughts when he starts casting Indignation is this:
czcams.com/video/hSJcONc90V8/video.html
@@_GuiltyGhost you basically need your entire party up, which is rough given their suicidal AI - even the goddamn casters sling spells from point blank. I'd rather control everyone's AI instead of managing a party one.
@@chaseong9560 all i did was go into every boss on hard with the accessory to halve the elemental damage they do, works everytime
The post-Jrpg depression hit hard after arise. Game was sick though, probably my second favorite of the 5 I’ve played.
You should try Scarlet Nexus. The gameplay and the story is also really good. Its also made by Bandai Namco.
@@zqkku scarlet has a really good combat.. but gosh the story.. is just.. idk full of exposition.. compare to tales that has alot of emotions in every dialogue.. i played both.. but i always skipped scarlet dialogue because its boring.. i always go for the combat, while tales are perfect on the story telling and gameplay.. imo tho
Literally feeling that now after finishing Tales of Vesperia
@@kafuchi2528Scarlet nexus story was actually good--its theme and concept but the campaign story was too short for a jrpg game. most jrpg main story would take 50-60 hours meanwhile SN only have like 20-30 hrs both yuito and kasane campaign story combined
It had the potential but due to the main story being too short, the worldbuilding and other aspects of the story was lackluster.
But SN was not the main priority of Bandai since Both SN and Ariae were released during 2021 and the executives chose arise while had to make with what they had. But SN had better DLC's surpisingly.
@@wizzy7755 idc if the story is good or bad. the amount of exposition and dialogue they overwhelm the player is annoying. game literally had more dialogue than the combat even though the main drive of the game is the good combat. they even cut boss fights and add tons of annoying dialogue mid combat for no reason.
Got ToA on the 8th, haven’t put it down since, 34 hours in and it’s still great.
The view pics I seen of the game looked really good, and now Joey saying it's amazing is enough for me to me
I'm addicted to Tales of Arise. It's such a great game that you can't stop playing for hours. Never crossed my mind they would have 2 anime openings in a single game
Same way, I did 120+ hours almost straight. Still have to do the lvl 99 boss n arena stuff. Looking forward to ng+
After that boss in the forgotten island that took me 20 minutes (and also that strange brain on the dungeon where the whole thing was a single battle), i don't think i'm doing any other boss lol
@@vestal3430 Artifacts bayybeee. 100% time saver i'm having alot more fun with the x2 damage. Cuts the time in half with those spongy ass enemies
Garnt’s experience with Tales of Arise is basically me with Persona 4: Golden. Ever since i picked it up, its the first thing I think about when I wake up now. I played for a total amount of 12 hours today, this game has got me hooked into it without a doubt.
P4g is an unforgettable experience
Agreed! Persona 4's flow is so good, so seemless, it felt like a really good show with great pacing (the only time I "stopped" is to farm some dungeon for 40mins).
Man, that was truly GOLDEN experience.
@@Zysperro finished it after 50 hours of gameplay, took a break for one day, and now im back on NG+ trying to do a 100% run. its super enticing.
Going from genshin to tales of arise was so easy and so much fun, it’s such a breath of fresh air having combo attacks and a full story
I’m probably going to finish Tales of Berseria before I get started on Arise and I got quite a ways to go with Berseria!
The chaos of everyone screaming makes the battles that much better
Just finished my Playthrough A couple hours ago on PlayStation 5, Final estimate of in game minutes is 483 hours and still going.
This game is a spectacle, hell I’d even put it as close as a 10 out of 10 masterpiece, but there are some shortcomings to the game so I’m gonna have to put it on a solid nine.
The world/world building, the characters/character design, atmosphere, combat, enemies and antagonist.
Amazing Writing, pacing, character interactions, and have I mentioned The skill tree, there is so many possibilities for different builds and skills to learn, at the very end you won’t even have anywhere close to enough points to unlock everything.
The replayability of this game is awesome and always keeps me glued and intrigued to learn more.
For anyone who hasn’t played this game and is skeptical since it’s a JRPG.
Please give it a try, trust me if you like anime, you will absolutely love this.
Now I want Gigguk to make Tales of series tier list video
This ended up being my favorite since Symphonia, Legendia and Abyss. I loved it!
Man! The boys should always play games and talk about it afterwards. This talk and praise about Tales of Arise made me buy and play it as soon as I finished watching this
Tales of arise makes you actually care about the characters. They are so fleshed out. Not only that but the game mechanics are fucking amazing, the graphics are awesome, the animations for the menu are awesome. It's just.. *muah* I love this game
I have honestly so much praise for arise. Easy 9/10 game and a great step forward for tales games. Hope Garnt makes a video on it.
Man tales of arise is good and I've spent like 100 hrs or something and I am just loving it.
I’m glad to see even Trash taste plays the tales of series games
Realizing that assist attacks refill your ag is the biggest big brain moment
My first tales exposure was Abyss, and I can see Garnt is coming from. I'm broke to play Arise but I really understand you man.
Is it possible to learn this power?
One gripe for Arise can be the visual overload especially with lone bosses. Be careful if you’re prone to seizures. Otherwise it’s so much fun. So far great characters within a simple premise. UNLIMITED DODGES YAAASSS. DODGE CANCEL COMBO EXTEND. So good. Easier and viable aerial combat with maneuverability.
Another gripe is the lack of explaining the UI. Changing characters. Map Display via country, etc. Some mechanics you stumble into or never find.
Came back to this after playing Tales of Arise myself and now I completely understand why Garnt spent those two weeks playing it. I absolutely love the game.
I loved Arise SO MUCH. Glad Garnt liked it!
I'm surprised no one mentioned the SAO DLC. Then again, judging by its place in the anime community, I think it's for the best
I was pleasantly surprised
this video was made before the Sao dlc I think so that's why
Because the SAO DLC is kind of eh. This is definitely a me thing but I didn’t really like the boss fight mostly because it was in the training grounds which means you can’t use items. And I like to spam the Blazing Sword. Do the math. The Mystic Arte you get from beating Kirito and Asuna is pretty nice though. That and I have the conflicting taste where I prefer Tales of Arise in it’s original Japanese version but hate Kirito’s Japanese voice. Honestly it should have just been free DLC.
Me finally playing Tales of Arise after it was on my shelf for the past two years. I love this series to begin with, and I can resonate with Garnt playing it for two weeks straight. I'm currently three weeks deep into it lol.
Read High Rise Invasion as a manga, I remember it started off very strong, but lost a lot of steam as the "big reveals" behind the mystery weren't very interesting. Never actually finished it though.
As for Arise... "You can get away with button mashing but the combat system is actually very deep and layered" might be the official slogan for the entire serie.
Yeah haha, people say berseria is a mashy game but I absolutely loved the amount of personality I was allowed to express through the combat.
Joey: i''ll get to iy eventually
me: i cant wait for his reaction
Such a good game! I love the characters, story, and gameplay. Visuals good too. I actually 100%ed it. Only thing I dislike about game is the dlc practices
It says a lot about what kind of games I like when I play DMC5, Arise, and Scarlet Nexus.
Every single thing that Garnt said about the game is 100% on point
Garnt and I had a similar Tales journey. I got in with Symphonia when it came out on Gamecube and I loved it because it wasn't turn based. I played every game that came out till Xillia, which was so disappointing I dipped out for Xillia 2. Came back with Zesteria and Bersera but I couldn't finish them. But just about a month ago I picked up Arise and I've been obsessed. About to finish the DLC and I absolutely love the game. Not as good as Abyss, Symphonia, and Vesperia, but still very very very good.
I spent a month playing Tales of Arise. It's by far the best game I've ever played
Connor before watching High Rise Invasion: "Huh, alright."
Connor after: "I am now. Cool."
I hope Gigguk can do a game review for Tales of Arise. Would love to see his review format.
NOW GET INTO THE TRAILS SERIES.. but for real unless ive missed something, id really love one of them to play the trails series and get their take on it
I second this. I recently finished Trails in the Sky and enjoyed it a lot.
I was not expecting to see a tales game on Trash taste
I like how High Rise Invasion got known for Sniper Mask
He's the best character in the show besides rika they're the only ones that have any relevance to the "plot"
Because the main character is boring
@@asuraXTC she's deadass just fanservice but the Manga came out way before the Netflix adaptation
Tales of arise was great I also loved the combat and the story was great it’s also the first tales game I got the platinum for.
Too bad that Grant will never experience The legend of heroes, the most Anime expirience you can get in a jrpg.
Which is sad thing since that series will hook him for a very long time
Such a good rpg series loved the trails of cold steel saga.
So did I, my friend. So did I. Best experience I've had in a Tales game since Tales of the Abyss back in the PS2.
"Every waking moment you are not playing the game, you are either playing the game or thinking of playing the game"
Yes... I can understand this...
The juggling mechanics, combo mechanics, character swapping mid combo, proper use of specials... you can definitely get a combo going for a loooong time and perpetually have your enemy in a stun lock.
I know for a fact that Joey is aware of the high rise anime because Joey talked about it during his spring ‘what will I be watching’
10:14 😂😂😂😂😂 “dah dah I’m your dad dah dah” 😂😂
Ahh Connor playing anime Russian Roulette. (Clicking random and watching whatever comes up.) I used to do that all of the time. Found some stuff that is in my favorites of all time list doing that (not always good of course).
Shows i found while rouletteing:
-The Fate franchise (the OG Dean series)
-Gurren Lagann
-Busou Renkin (never heard of it before i watched it and i kinda like it)
-Code Geass
-Ouran Highschool Host Club
-Many Many more.

"Think you can get me!"
"You are done!"

When they arguing each other, the opposite party is always right beside each other lmao
I’m tempted to try arise but I’m playing through symphonia for the fourth time. Once you find ur favourite tales u don’t want it to end
Turn-based combat and real-time combat have two very different appeals and most people who do not like turn based combat typically haven't really played a lot of games with turn-based combat besides Final Fantasy and Pokémon. Dragon Quest, Saga, Trails, mainline SMT, Fire Emblem, and Valkyria Chronicles are just a few series that come to my head that all have distinctly different and enjoyable turn-based combat systems. Most of these series don't even have random encounters or even require grinding (at least in their newer games) and actively work to avoid what many see as downsides to turn-based combat. I just think people should give more turn-based combat games a shot, especially Trails. I just really like Trails lol
trails is the biggest sleeper series man the world-building is so good
Hello fellow trails fans, i just cleared Trails in the sky FC, new game+, 100% achievement, even it’s an old game, i still like it more than any turn based game, not even including the beginning of SC, Estelle returning to the home town talking with everyone they know you talking about you and their life(never experience this strong world building before in my life, yeah people are really living their life, not just standing there to be a NPC A or NPC B), seeing Estelle overcome her mental state, i freaking love that moment, and addition to its combat system is also refreshing after playing SC for 200+ hours. still have a long way to go.
I’m not going to compare turn based game to Tales of series but i just want to say that i have cleared Zestiria, but never able to finish Berseria because of its terrible level design👎 Arise is a huge improvement but still have plot holes and many flaws, i found because of my play style that influenced by trails series, which is ‘talking to every NPC’ and it made me found that some of the dialogues is contradict to the story 🙄
This video popped up in my recommended and totally forgot I commented on it. Funny looking back on now that Garnt has actually started playing Trails lmao.
I feel the same way when I got into Dragon Quest 11 and the Fire Emblem three houses game
Boost break replacing fatal strike is kinda great but being unable to juggle human boss is kinda a letdown.
but who wouldn't like demon fang spam quote XD
My eyes must be playing with me cause I read the title as “Garnt spent 2 weeks straight playing Tales of ARSE”
There's a inside joke in Arise with Rinwell where instead of saying here spells she says "Blah blah blah"
Only on english dub
It's a fun game but I have some problems with the game. The final dungeon, it's just a bunch of HP sponges that you can't do the cool boost strikes to until they are at 1 HP, and it doesn't help that I was underleveled from avoiding them every chance I could.
Also, gald is so scarce and items are pretty expensive. Which leads me to avoiding the HP sponge enemies. And final complaint is not being able to cancel artes, someone made a mod recently that allows you to cancel moves and it's amazing.
Love Tales of Arise! Up there with Abyss, Vesperia, and Symphony! Even better i suppose
I’ll tell you what high rise invasion is it’s a banger anime that we’re still waiting on a season 2 for
Tales of Arise is the first tales of game that I managed to play longer than other tales of games
Jrpgs are probably the only type of game that it takes me just as long to decide wether or not to play it as it does to actually play and finish it. I still can't decide.
Think you can take me!?
Don't forget me!
Alright so I played Tales of Arise in September for about 3 weeks and platinumed it. It IS an awesome game, but there are some weak points. The combat system is so much fun, but towards the end the story goes a bit off the rails and loses focus (although I’d say this is like the last 15-20% of the game tbh). It soured my experience with it just a little, although I’d still say it’s a great game. The characterization is good and I love that there are two opening songs. They’re both bangers. The production quality of the game is excellent.
That guy should try more JRPGS. Final Fantasy is fucking brilliant (to me at least), and I’ve enjoyed Fire Emblem to a degree as well.
Also, turn based combat is just fine. I think personally I prefer action now, but I can go back to turn based like it’s nothing. So many of the games I grew up with were like that, and I think it’s dismissive to say that no one ever figured out a way to make it fun. That’s just corny.
Arise’s story is definitely one of the weakest parts of the game. For one thing the whole thing about the Great Spirit came into play a little too late in the game and for another thing, and this is a much more personal opinion, they should have kept Ganabelt alive for longer than just Cyslodia. He was a piece of shit but I kind of liked him! He would have been a much more interesting main antagonist than Vholran!
the sonic tails joke was so good
Garnt is fighting against kirito and asuna in the dlc as we speak
Double spining edge
Double spining edge
Double spining edge
Roiling smash

The way Conner almost had a stroke when Garnt said he dousn't normally care about a game's mechanics X'D
I played Tales of Arise in surround sound. Every Character shouting in every channel.
The manga really went boom. It was so good at the beginning
Iv seen this Manga ever shop ever for like 2 years now how have they not seen it at all lol
And I spent two weeks straight playing Dragon Quest 11.
Good game. Easy Platinum. I fear I'm going back down the JRPG rabbit hole.
I love tales of Arise so much i couldnt bring myself to finish it, i reach the very last level and just stopped playing. My save has been sitting there on my ps5 waiting for me to finish that last level, since launch!
I’m gonna get to Tales of Arise…eventually…after Tales of the Abyss and Tales of Graces F, and Tales of Xillia 1 and 2, and Tales of Symphonia Chronicles, and- Ooh, is that another port of Tales of Vesperia? Hot dog!
Connor should try the Mario & Luigi series. I feel it’d be right up his alley as far as turn based JRPGs go.
I work a full-time job and it only took me 6 days to 100% Tales of Arise.
Anyone know what Garnt's shirt is? I can't seem to figure it out.
I love the fit Joey!
Alternative title by Connor- “RPG fans find out games can be good”
Didn't garnt mention this in one of his videos already? I know I've seen it somewhere
He mentioned Tales of Symphonia in an earlier episode, not sure if that's what you're talking about though
Kinda late but Tales of Arise is actually something which will always remain in my heart... I played a lot of JRPGs and I always tried to finish them but when I was playing Tales of Arise I actually played as little as possible cuz I didn't want to finish it...and what was unexpected for me was romance being a part of the game... I like romances in games so when I saw Shionne's and Alphen's interaction it made me smirk quite a lot 😅 The DLC was also very good...
We are getting a DLC for tales I’m so excited
From his explanation it sounds like he played Honkai and I might check out tales of arise now.
The latest season of Baki is the craziest anime ever. It’s so fucking weird but incredibly entertainment.
Ugh....I need to force myself to go back and actually play Tales of Xillia 2 and then Berseria before I feel like I can play Arise... just the idea of the time commitment hurts.
Mans not wrong. Arise is a bloody good game and a fun one at that.
wait until donguri990 gets a hold of this games combat. The enemies will then know true fear.
Ar series is an underrated series even compare to Trails and Y’s.
Comparing it to Falcom games is just different league
I liked tales of arise too. The environments were beautiful at times
