Read a bunch on Michael Collins, when I first heard this, long before SOA. It felt very much like the history I've read of the Civil War here in the US....surrender was the only way to make peace, and the High Road ended in a bridge. This song captures history, as written by the unwilling among the peacemakers.

I couldn't agree more.... As a fervent SOA fan - I love the music - and the show - but it all leads me to learn about other things. While it's great to memorialize this moment in the show's evolution - it's also a blessing to hear a song that captures such a serious and difficult history...
Right on for what you said out there.

    Do deineadh aréir dom

(Was revealed to me last night)
    IgCorcaigh go danach
    (In Cork, a late hour)
    Ar leaba im aonar
    (In my solitary bed)
I remember you back in the GPO with Connolly and Clarke
Laughin' with McDermott through the bullets and the
    sparks
Always with the smart remark, your eyes blazin' and
    blue
But when we needed confidence we always turned to you
And when they shot our leaders up against Kilmainham
    wall
You were there beside us in that awful Easter dawn
Hey, big fellah..........where the hell are you now
When we need you the most
    Hey, big fellah..........c'mon
    Tabhair dom do lamh
    (Give me your hand)
Back on the streets of Dublin when we fought the black
    and tans
You were there beside us, a towerin' mighty man
And God help the informer or the hated English spy
By Jaysus, Mick, you'd crucify them without the
    blinkin' of an eye
Still you had a heart as soft as the early mornin' dew
Every widow, whore and orphan could always turn to you
We beat them in the cities and we whipped them in the
    streets
And the world hailed Michael Collins, our commander and
    our chief
And they sent you off to London to negotiate a deal
And to gain us a republic, united, boys, and real
But the women and the drink, Mick, they must have got
    to you
'Cause you came back with a country divided up in two
We had to turn against you, Mick, there was nothin' we
    could do
'Cause we couldn't betray the republic like Arthur
    Griffith and you
We fought against each other, two brothers steeped in
    blood
But I never doubted that your heart was broken in the
    flood
And though we had to shoot you down in golden Bal na
    Blath
I always knew that Ireland lost her greatest son of all

Griffith and Collins were pretty much forced into signing the agreement when threatened by a continuation of the anglo irish-war. This was probably a bluff by the british as it was just after ww1 and the british government probably couldn't afford to carry on fighting because of the current public opinion (because of factors like the actions of the black and tans). Either way The Irish leaders who were negotiating where told they had until midnight that day to sign the agreement or face war.

The hell with Sons of Anarchy. Great song by a blisteringly great band. Have been privileged to see them live and even a few times during the legendary Paddy Reilly's stand back in the 90s."The air was filled with flying stout and soaring cigarettes".
I detect some black Irish humor in the song. Larry's talking about a guy who's been dead a hundred years and yet demanding "where the hell are ya now?". Shiftless bastard, dig yourself out of your moldy grave like Keiren of "In the Flesh" slake yourself with a gargle of Guinness and get back to work. Being dead is no f-ing excuse.
Collins had burning eyes that would bore into and terrify people. He was no starry eyed revolutionary. He was calculating, sinister, bloody, vicious and relentless in his mission.

  • @SirFlapalot
    @SirFlapalot Před 11 lety

No-one was winning, Collins said himself that the IRA couldn't afford to carry on fighting for more than a few weeks, at the very most. It was not a war anyone would want to be fighting. On the irish side innocent civilians were harassed and even killed by the Black and Tans. On the British side it was believed they would need 100,000 soldiers to completely end the IRA, after WW1, this wasn't really an option. However, the IRA would never have won if the war carried on.

but when you live in a country where the vast majority of the population descend from immigrants, people really hold on to their roots, so irish are always irish, poles are always poles, italians are always italians, koreans are always koreans and persians are always persians. Many people like to hold on to that stuff, it reminds them of who they are, and at times it helps a lot.

Sierra0253 Honestly I find that enormously stupid. It IS their heritage, it's where their family comes from. As a Spaniard, not only am I okay with spanish-americans holding high their heritage but actually it makes me proud; proud to see that my country means so much to them. And yet you babble about some pseudo-nazi purity thing.

    • @jorgeferdenav
      @jorgeferdenav Před 10 lety +1

Sierra0253 It may be a nationality issue for you, but for them it's an ethnic issue. Just because they didn't grow up there doesn't mean they didn't have contact with it, and sure many of them have no idea about what Ireland is really like but you can't just generalize. Plus, for centuries, feeling American wasn't a thing, so they all felt like they were from were ever their families were from, lived in comunities, trying to hold on to their culture and building around them a little piece of home. Being a Spaniard and you not being one, you have no idea what my experience is. There may not be as many Spanish-americans as Irish-americans, but they do exist, only they are usually mistaken for mexicans or just not noticed at all. Also, I include not just people in the US within the word "americans" but ALL americans, meaning there are A LOT of people south of Rio Grande that DO babble about Spanish heritage having not been to Spain in their lives. The difference between you and me is that you policy towards other is of exclusion and elitism, my atittude is that of inclusion and togetherness. Your way of thinking is exactly what brought war unto Europe for a good deal of the last century and more.

    • @Shove72
      @Shove72 Před 10 lety

My heritage is just enough Irish to get chills when I think about the parallels between Ireland and America. The British had more of a stake in the Emerald Isle, and its citizens, than in the USA - we did away with the monarchy here, and there were no gentry. Ireland still reveres her Kings.
