Oh i love seeing these every year! You and Turner Classic Movies make the best montages
I'm so glad they went back to this music. It really brings the drama.
Thanks for including the movie list!
Every year I wait for this
Beautiful ❤
Is that a #MollyBloom reference at the end?
Maybe it is considering that Greta and Noah made some literary references like the Proust one
👍
Of course, most of the montage focused on the 2023 competitors, but I do wish they'd included more of the really old films -- only 5 silents, and only 3 from the 1930's.
Actually, they included 6 silents (I think you maybe missed "The Great Train Robbery" at the beginning). And to be fair, 1963 only got 2 films (plus an Outer Limits nameplate) but, yeah, throwing in 42nd Street would've been nice for 1933.
@@SwiftFoxProductions I do remember seeing "Great Train Robbery" -- it made an impression because it was colorized, so that was a disappointment. I must have missed one, though, if there were six altogether, so I'll go back and look again. They missed quite a pile of films from the 1930's, especially considering that 1939 is often considered the greatest year in film history. Love "42nd Street," it would have been a great addition!
I miss the classical music 😕
No John Wayne clip. AFI has always been biased against him.
They included John Wayne in their Top 20 greatest male stars list so, I wouldn't say that... I'm curious what John Wayne film you were wishing they included this time?? This retrospective is specifically showing films in 10 year increments so, only clips from movies made in 1933, 1943, 1953 etc... could be included. The only notable John Wayne film that was made on the correct year would've been "McClintock!" which is a movie I love but, I'm not exactly shocked it wasn't included. Movies like "Stagecoach", "Red River", "The Quiet Man" and "The Searchers" were not eligible to be included in the retrospective this year.
(BTW, the AFI actually did include "The Quiet Man" in their retrospective last year to represent 1952).
How in God's name could you have skipped ANYTHING by Jarmusch or Van Santa for the 90s? This list CANNOT be about great films if your standard is "mainstreamed and sanitized for the masses" 🙄
Please stop being part of the problem for great Art to be seen.
Umm... Jarmusch didn't direct anything in 1993. 🤨 And I'm going to assume you meant Gus Van Sant? The only movie he made in 1993 was "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" which isn't exactly his best film.
This retrospective is exclusively showcasing movies made in 10 year increments so, only movies made in 1983, 1993, etc... are included (yes, all the ones shown for the '90s were specifically from 1993).
