Great talk, but the title is ''out of space'' in relation to the talk, or better, it doesn't reflect it.
''How to fund your little indie team to make games on different platforms'', would be a better title.
or ''How to use new platforms to fund your little indie game project''.
The point, when to give up: If you can't find a platform thats funding your prototype, stop the work and make another one.

gotta love that gdc intro noise blowing my eardrums out

The editor here really has to make it so that the slides don't disappear at random points in the talk. I see it repeated in a lot of the GDC videos, but it's pointless and it makes it hard to take notes.

This is seriously the best GDC talk ever - the games, how they do it, the uncertainty, the guy - so bizarre! Love it.

Seeing this probably couldn't have come at a more useful time in our development cycle. Something thats been a real struggle to do is have literally ANY kind of funding. We have been trying to keep our projects alive by doing stock investing and if anyone here does that knows it requires a lot of time and attention and frankly, almost took over our priorities all together at one point.
I WAS kind of hoping to get an answer on when to call it quits with a project but I think the video says if you believe in your game, don't give up- just seek out new emerging markets.
    Thanks for this talk.

How are you doing now? This talk is a bit old, but your comment is only a year old. Any success with this strategy?

Very interesting talk! Thanks a lot for explaining all of this!
I always looked down on the early gen released console games and thought they were disgusting money grabs but now I understand that there really is a NEED for these games and I've experienced it myself with the PS4 and how it lacked ANY games for MONTHS!

@GDC - review the video - the original talk has 28 minutes or so - but the video has another talk 'attached' to it, resulting in a 58 min video!!

  • @DonWippo1

I personally think it would be better to not show animal pictures between slides, because it is distracting and does not add anything to the talk. Plus I find the name misleading.
Other than that: Nice Talk, that shows off some alternative to the traditional launching and funding model that is deeply embedd in our heads.
