These are not "women." They are mares. I've sometimes heard them called "ladies," or "girls," for fun. But not "women." Just as one might call male horses -- stallions or geldings -- "guys," "gentlemen," or "boys," but not "men." I don't know why this is, but it is.
The mares are absolutely beautiful! I love the way the tails are blowing in the wind!
All the babys sleeping under their moms shadows, that's one of the sweetest scenes I've seen.

Just like daycare! They all lay down at the same time for a nap. Huge difference though the foals are more secure as they know their mommas are standing guard. How sweet and what a beautiful sight! 🐎❤

Hahaha - the moms are great guardians until everyone goes off and leaves Lianne flat out asleep. Complete trust in their surroundings, I'm sure. :) Beautiful cattle across the way, too.

Ahhh 😴 the last time it was Lieke sleeping on the concrete and I said that would be me as a horse....well now I stand corrected!! 🤷 Lianne is most definitely me as a horse 😂 that's the story of my life, every Saturday morning my family goes out for breakfast and leaves me asleep 😴 it's actually really sweet though they let me sleep in and rest on Saturdays 🖤

Wow that is the first time I have seen three horses so relaxed at the same time all resting their back leg, and also four foals so relaxed at the same time.

I remember how amazed I was by this video. I never knew that mares do this. They stand like statues, so vigilant in watching over their foals. Sometimes they even provide shade! Truly fascinating. I can imagine wild mares doing this, making sure no predators or unfriendly mares endanger their babies. Also lovely to see some of these mares, who have since been sold, again. Elsje, Sanne Aukje, Rinske...

The mares continue to astound me! They make shade with their bodies to protect their foals from midday heat! Sanne Aukje looke stunning in this video, her mane blowing in the wind as she blocks you from her foal. Beautiful!

Amazing how organized the lives of horses are. All the foals go to sleep at the same time, all the moms go to drink together afterwards, they know not to approach each other's new foals,
and the babies soon learn not to get too close to the mamas, or they will be told in no no uncertain terms 'goaway, go to your own mama!'. Beautiful to behold such a life....

Next year they get a new foal.
Breeding season for mares is generally spring-late summer/early fall. During that period, mares tend to ovulate within a series of 21-day cycles. Ovulation falls off during fall-winter. So they breed once a year.
