- Square Enix has been on an absolutely tear with the HD 2D games. As someone who isn't graphics focused, I was already sold, but I didn't expect to walk out of my experience with a JRPG that was so unique. Each of Live A Live's many tales have their own flavors, characters, and mechanics that make it a must play game.

Golden Sun should not be that hard to convert over to HD-2D. I just hope after the classics and fan favorites are out that Golden Sun gets some love.
I would buy that so fast. They could put all 3 on one cartridge. Would be soo cool.
The first two Golden Sun games are wonderful and would be nice to have updated. I've never played the third one. All these remakes, remasters, ports etc. are stifling originality IMO. I'd like to see more high quality new games be made rather than just have old games be touched up and get charged $40 to play them.
@@acidwizard6528 I’m with you on the new games. In fact I’d prefer if Nintendo waited for the 30th anniversary to do it.
I just want the newer generation to experience these games without having to look and sometimes overpay for the older cartridges. I almost didn’t even know what Live A Live was until I heard some creators taking about it.
Golden Sun isn't a Square Enix title. There is no way that would happen.
@@chuck0624ify He didnt say Square should do it. Camelot can stop making mario sports games and do it lol
After playing both Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy, I gotta say... These HD-2D games started to grow on me.
I love games that are still confident in the beauty of 2D sprites. I've been saying for a long time I wish Pokemon kept sprites and just evolved like live a live or octopath.
i hate these new pokemon games...even the ds and 3ds ones,GBA GBC and GB pokemon games are the best ones
Love your enthusiasm! The remake is like a dream come true. I haven't identified an area where I think the game isn't as good or better than the original which I already loved. THIS is how you do a remake.
I agree WRT the game itself... but there is one loose hair: the marketing. In trailers and even on the box including Oersted, while not totally giving anything away, is still pretty spoilery. And I'm honestly not sure why they chose to do that as it takes away the delight at discovering the 8th chapter after the first 7.
I just finished the Switch remake, got the true ending, and holy guacamole that ending sequence was nothing short of phenominal!
Hope you have a final chapter select save ready because there's like 4 more endings you can get.
I actually JUST beat this game last night and MY GOD this remake was everything i wanted it to be and more. The quality of life changes are wonderful, the voice acting can be hit or miss with a lot of people but i enjoyed it, the music is just LEGENDARY. When i played the orginal Fan translated SNES version on a Rom i loved this game but had some frsutrating moments with certain chapters, particularly with Edo Japan chapter. NOW i love all the chapters and what they contain. I want to go back and complete Obomaru's chapter without killing anyone. I want to go back and find EVERY hidden boss and defeat them for the hell of it. I want to find all the secrets and expirience them for myself. Thats how much this remake means to me now. It's also added some extra mini games and story bits that make the overall expirience so much better then the original SNES version. It's the same story but improved in a lot of ways. My personal Hope is Square sees Live a Live as a potential new series for Experimentation, which is what this game was originally. They could market this game as giving new employees a chance to make new bite sized stories and more.
Shut up the voice acting is perfect just wish the game was longer
I played with japanese audio and what a surprise with some voices!! I played this game on snes too and yeah, I did pretty much everything on the remake with multiple bad endings and maybe I will beat it with every protagonist. I even got the Collector's edition from Japan and the OST is everything I wanted
@@shadowingmirror4634 longer? I know 25/30 hours isn't a big deal, but for a traditional JRPG is more than enough
FYI: This game from the Squaresoft era was composed by Yoko Shimomura and directed by Takashi Tokita (FF IV, Chrono Trigger, Parasite Eve)!
I love the art style as well. I wouldn't mind if they made more JRPGs in this style
One interesting thing to note is that every chapter is based on some popular media of the genre involved, at least per some interviews surrounding the original which was itself a bit of a skunkworks project. Far Future is probably the easiest to identify combining aspects of 2000 (HAL) and Alien (the Behemoth). Or current day with Masaru basically being a Street Fighter main. The big boi in Imperial China was called Sammo in the fan translation because, well... he is both big and fast and derived from Sammo Hung's old Hong Kong action flicks (which are amazing and you should watch them because he is big and fast and how does he bend like that?).
Coupled with Yoko Shimomura rocking like 8 different musical themes... but given her work on stuff like Street Fighter 2 itself and many, many more after of course she did.
I really love this game and this remaster.
Man I think I've used my switch more than anything else this year. So many jrpgs to play!
@Archon Same. Elden ring and final fantasy xiv are the only things I've used my PS5 for so far this year.
I’ve been looking forward to this game ever since it was announced and this video just solidifies my reason for buying it. This art style is my favorite thing going right now in the game industry and I love the different stories, even if some are better than others. Great video man!
Just discovered the channel with your ff 12 video. The videos themselves are great, but the way you are able to explain each element of the games makes you stand out from the rest of the pack.
I look forward to watching more of your reviews
=]
In my opinion, the most amazing thing about this game is how it blends game types and gimmicks in each of it's stories, like Edo being RPG/infiltration, Western being RPG/management, Present being RPG/VsFighting, the game is like a love letter to video gaming. Each chapter has both clever design and things to say. So glad they decided to remake this masterpiece
I’m really hoping they eventually do Mario rpg and Chrono trigger hd-2d
This is the top comment! I'm hoping that's what they are working toward.
I would add Final Fantasy VI to that list and the second Lufia game. 🤩
Chrono trigger is fine as is!
Bro I hope they do a Chrono Trigger version! Omg!
I’d also FF tactics & FF 4-6.
I played the original SNES version with a fan translation way back in the day. It felt a bit short, but very unique and well put together, definitely worth playing. Glad they remade it and are sharing it with a wider audience.
Definitely looks and sounds like another great jrpg. Right up my wheel house. Will be picking this one up after I get through some backlog of games. Another great video Matty thank you!
Gotta get through the back log
I might pick this up when I finish FE three hopes and my goodness u aren’t kidding this game looks gorgeous the art style is amazing
I hope Square brings more of their classic rpgs back that didn't make it to the west like
Bahamut Lagoon.
YESSS!! I would love Rudra no Hihou as well. We missed some of the best RPGs from the 16 bit era here in the West, although most have been playable in one way or another as time has gone on.
Now that would be incredible for sure
Legend of dragoon but it could just be nostalgia talking lol
Meh
@@acidwizard6528 Once again, and I can't stop saying it: Thank you Aeon Genesis for translating Seiken Densetsu 3, Live A Live and Rudra no Hihou. May you find success in all your endeavors. You deserve it!
Got my copy sitting here. Wrapping up Aria of Sorrow and jumping in!
Both are some of my faves! :D
This game is wild, some of the themes in every chapter were just nuts. The Shifu and Cube chapters in particular shocked me multiple times, and of course the final chapter did so many things that were next level amazing. I didn't play or even hear of the original until now, and seeing it alongside the remake, this is one of the most high effort and high quality remakes I have ever seen and it's a blast.
I've been wanting to play and beat this game since I heard about it in EGM back in the day and I tried playing a bit of it in Japanese when it was possible to emulate so to be able to finally play an official translation was already enough for me but the remake does so much more!
I just complete this game last night with the "True" ending and I loved every bit of it! Definitely going up there with my favorites!
Great review! Live A Live HD-2D was my first CZcams review, and I've definitely picked up some pointers from you to use in future reviews. Nicely done!
i started with the distant future chapter and it really sent me for a loop~i wasn't expecting a murder mystery~it was a surprise in the best possible way~i was glued to it~now i'm going the opposite way with prehistoric times~and the gestures the characters make really make up for any dialogue there could have been~it's brillantly done~
a quick disclaimer about prehistoric story, what pogo says in the end is love but they mistranslated it because they thought he screamed in japanese
@@peste4592doesn’t help that the original Japanese was wordplay as well, so it was easy to mistranslate.
I had no idea about this game, glad you made a video cause this is definitely up my street. Also, Matty if you read this I have a game recommendation for you. Cosmic Star Heroine is basically a love letter to chrono trigger set in a blade runner esque cyberpunk world. The art is beautiful as well!
I second that recommendation
Pretty good overview. I picked up my copy yesterday and I'm on my third character (Edo Japan after Pre-History and Imperial China). Really loving it. So happy it seems to be getting a good reception.
I just beat it and got the true ending and damn i adored this game. Actually glad ny xenoblade 3 and digimon survive arrived late because made me play this while waiting and damn. It was great
I’m loving this game so much, and I’m praying that the come out with a ff6 and chrono trigger remake in this style
Gimme Tobal 2 port
I'd like FF6 this way but Chrono Trigger. I want a remake of it to be special. More special. More like a DQ11 art style.
@@bukojoetheslapsoils8273 I'd want an FF 6 remake to look like the Japanese SNES box art
I want a Chrono Trigger remake in FF7 remake style wayyyy more.
I would love a chrono trigger remake
Live A Live is really that dang good. The little robot Cube’s story made my jaw drop.
Not to be a douchebag, but why? It's basically 2001: Space Odyssey. lol
@@Trololo231
The design and atmosphere of it probably. The final boss is pretty sick, too.
So far finished the Far future and modern day storyline and am loving it! Played the far future in the demo and then stopped when it ended and preordered the game. Love all the HD-2D games and I knew I'd get this one when it was announced.
The scenario and combat designer of Live A Live (Nobuyuki Inoue), became director of Earthbound 3.
So far I've played the Prehistory and Imperial China chapters. Prehistory was my favorite, it's pretty funny and fun to play. China was a little dull and tedious from a gameplay perspective but had a better narrative for sure. Playing these two back to back really emphasized that each chapter is going to be wildly different in style and tone, so I'm excited to dive into Japan today!
Oh man. I just now beat the present day section. Loved it. Can't wait to get into more. Hardcore Golf Story music vibes in that section. Looooooove Yoko Shimamura's work.
Absolutely loving this game. Bought it off the eshop and have been enjoying it since the demo released.
It's been such a long time I haven't played such an amazing and gorgeous game. I finished it with true ending, and I just wanna make one thing now : doing the game once more, and finding the hidden bosses !
I haven't played the remake but I loved the original when I stumbled upon a translated ROM of it for SNES emulators. Live-a-Live, Bahamut Lagoon, and Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen are still some of my top games that I go back and play every so often. I even switched to Android primarily for access to emulators to play my old games on the go.
I just finished the game yesterday, and I enjoyed it WAY more than I expected! The last few chapters really sold it for me! :)
Just my thoughts, i really did not expect the endgame and it made it more of a combined game.
Octo path is still the much better game, but it could learn something from Live a Live wrapping the game up like this.
@@johnyjohny7472 Octopath bore me to death (horrible party interaction, grind system and final chapter imo), instead i enjoyed Live a Live soooo much more.
the voice acting for most text SOLD it to me instantly when you said that plus the art style is a huge plus cause i LOVE that pop-up look
You sold me on Live A Live and I’ve been loving it so far! The artstyle is fantastic. Combat is fun but I’m just getting the hang of it. Wouldn’t have played this gem if it wasn’t for this video so thanks!
Only thing stopping me from totally playing this right now is I got into a new book from my reading list. I fell in love with it the moment I heard about it from the direct. I loved octopath despite its flaws so I love this too.
Just finished it, loved it! Specially once you have done all chapters!
I’m one of the nerds who played the original a few years ago, and I’m excited to try this version when I get the chance. I’m excited for a new generation to experience the Middle Ages chapter (if you know you know). I’m surprised to hear you don’t have to finish chapters before moving on to the next, I guess that was one of the flaws of the original. The Edo Japan chapter was always one of my favorites, I always loved how you can traverse the whole castle without killing anyone, or satisfy your blood-thirst and kill all 100 of the guards. I’m excited to see what they’ve changed. I’m hoping but not expecting Akira to have been buffed, but either way Sundown will always be the traditional team leader for me.
Akira is a beast in this version.
Based
Excited to play! First video of yours im seeing. liked and subbed!
Live A Live was already easily one of my top five favorite RPGs of all time. Perhaps my second favorite, next only to Octopath Traveler. So when I found out that my second favorite RPG was being remade in the style of my first favorite, and I saw that trailer for the first time, I damn near cried. I must have replayed the trailer half a dozen times before I could stave off the urge to throw money at my screen.
I first played the original back in 2005. I was 16. That was more than half my life ago. But playing the remake, I feel like I'm 16 again. Despite the story being nearly identical, the game itself feels brand new, as it should, and it may very well reclaim that number one spot for me. I still love Octopath to no end, but I think a fresh coat of paint is exactly what Live A Live needed after going nearly 30 years without any sort of rerelease whatsoever.
Have you played Trails or Ys games?
Did the original have audio? Or did they add it to the remake?
@@flick2flick audio? Well... yeah. Even atari had audio
@@nanashi1173 speech audio
@@flick2flick The words you were looking for were "voice acting". And no. This is a remake of a Super Nintendo game, soooo
I've been a fan of the original game for the past 9 years or so, but I definitely plan on picking this up at some point. So glad to see the majority of people seem to be loving it!
Great review! I am like 10 hrs in the game and i love the art style and the short stories, being a rpg old school in portable mode is better playing a couple of hrs every night.
Also, the scenario and combat designer of Live A Live (Nobuyuki Inoue) became director of Earthbound 3.
pre-ordered it, rarely play stuff day one lately but I think it's exactly what I was hoping it would be.
love it so far, only done 2 timelines but it could end up being one of my favorites
Do the visuals go harder pc? Trying to decide whether to play on pc for visuals vs switch for convenience
One of best things, this went for 32 pound in uk on launch, some places sold for 29. Xenoblade respectively was 42 pounds. Really solid prices
Hey just stumbled into your CZcams channel , I enjoyed Demo and bought it. Finished one chapter and am hooked so far
I'm loving it so far. I played the demo briefly with Cube. And then instantly bought it. I'm playing through the present. And I'm really enjoying it so far. The music is great. The game is beautiful. And the combat is really fun.
I was curious. I'm definitely picking this up today!
For various reasons whenever I tried the SFC version decades ago it didn’t click. But I put 22 hours over two days to true get true end and this game 100% deserves it’s flowers. Truly one of the Goats.
It is amazing to see another golden age of JRPGs after the difficult ps3 era. There was a time when people thought it was over for the genre.
lol you're literally saying that when the PS3 gave you Persona 5, Ni No Kuni, Star Ocean The Last Hope, Eternal Sonata, Trails Of Cold Steel, and Tales Of Symphonia? Get the hell out of here with that bullcrap.
It’s originally a Super Famicom game, never came out for SNES. But there’s a great English fan translation romhack if you look for it, if you’re into emulation.
At the start of July I was like.. There's bugger all coming out! We are now near the end of the month and I have finished Stray and As Dusk Falls.. Both really good games and now I have this and Xenoblade 3 on switch to play. GREAT month imo
I wanted to know if the game is really just that first episode that you play with each of the characters. Is that the entire game or after you do each episode does it open up further?
I just started playing octopath traveler 2 omg I'm blown away !! This has to be the best old school type I've ever played ! Live a live is also pretty awesome. I Have to pick up a physical copy of it next week .
I bought it physical and i'm having a blast. Although the turn-meter does confuse me at times. Can someone explain how it works in simple terms lmao
Just picked this up physically, new, today! wanted to make sure to get it new so they get the money. My dream is a remake like this for FFIV-VI and Chrono Trigger!
I want a Lunar Legends remake so bad!!! Specially one that has this art style.
this is matty's main channel for me
The fighter class looks sick🔥
I would love to see Chrono Trigger done with this updated art style and even though it's not own by Square and the original version is perfect; Earthbound would look awesome this way
Earthbound would be a nice treat in this form
What do you mean Square does not own it? It does, isn't?
@Archon Sorry, I missread that sentence.
Will be starting this game tonight when I get home can’t wait
Picked it up on launch. Waiting to dive in.
Just picked it up yesterday at Best Buy haven’t tried it yet though. Might get started tonight
Just picked this up..the music alone is just epic what more can be said about how good this game is.
I got octopath traveler and I'm so hyped to play it as soon as I finish Tales of Vesperia DE and I because of octopath and what it did has cause me to also be hyped for live a live
I'm not one for dialouge heavy or visual novel type games but the distant future chapter really surprised me and I appreciated the voice acting
Ever since the beautiful octopath traveler I have loved 2d style rpgs... so simple yet gorgeous there are actually a lot of indy 2d rpgs on switch and ps4 ps5
how many hours each storie ? and the total of the game please can someone tell me ? many thanks !
it was fitting this got hd 2d because it clearly inspired octopath (and according to toby fox megalovania and some hints of chrono trigger sprinkled throughout the og version).
Just finished the demo!
It might not have the hype of some of the other square games that deserve a re release but this game will be incredible, can’t wait to buy it and get stuck in
Unlimited Saga had handy suggestion-ish pages on the character select. Like "if you want a magical adventure". If it weren't for the stupid roulette system, I would have played the heck out of it.
Does LaL not say anything on the character select?
i would joke about this getting remade. if I'm on twitter or facebook and there is SquareEnix news, "oh that is cool but can we get Live a Live, Bahamut Lagoon and Rudra no Hihou?"(i only played those ones)
and wow. this is unespected.
I played the original many many years ago. Back then I could really only get into the robot story and the near future one (that battle theme slaps!) So I'm hesitant to get a Switch just for this lol
You'd be massively missing out.
Want them to make new games like this. I've finished like 60 switch games and octopath is my favorite game out of all of them
I wish the western stage was longer. It felt way to short and that’s my favorite one
This game was totally new to me. I love it I love it! It’s like 8 games in 1! Such variety and visually satisfying.
There is no physical disc for this game?
I wonder if i should get nack into octopath traveler.... worroed that my party wont level if i dont have tgem active.. such a scary thought... as i got burned out after 4 or 5 chapter 1s
Chrono Trigger and Terranigma need this same HD2D treatment.
Been playing the demo and it convinced me to buy the game physically, once I'm done with 13 sentinels aegis rim I'm putting all my hours into this gem 💎
How is 13 sentinels
I've been playing these old ass games my whole life and all of a sudden it's cool. That would out well.
random thing, the characters on the cover are posed to form an A too, cool little thing that shows the attention to details
Looks to me like they're gearing up to do a Chrono Trigger HD-2D, either next, or in the lineup of HD-2D remakes.
Now that Nintendo and Squaresoft (or SquareEnix as they're known now) are getting along to some degree with some good looking exclusives, I'd like to see them do either Super Mario RPG as a fully 3D game, or a full on sequel, Super Mario RPG 2, in either HD-2D or fully 3D.
Hope FF6 gets the same treatment.
Chrono Trigger HD-2D would be the most nothing remake ever. It wouldn't make the game look substantially better by much. Game already plays and looks good. Live a Live benefitted from a touch up
I'd really love to experience how something like Terranigma would feel in this style. I'm starting to notice I just don't have the patience and love for turn based / menu based combat anymore. 😅
FOR REAL REVIVE TERRANIGMA
I mean we got Live A Live, so Terranigma has a good shot, too!
if they do terranigma they should do illusion of gaia and soul blazer as well.
Yeah we need to see an action RPG or action adventure with this graphical style, like if Alundra got remade in this style I would drop everything. Terranigma is on my to-do list.
Kinda want to see Chrono Trigger in this style myself, playing Live A Live I felt like the art style was trying to be Chrono Triggers art style.
I'm gonna need some more HD-2D games. Thanks SE.
How the hell did you beat it so quick
Just got my copy & hopefully the translation is as good as the fan translation.
If SE gonna remake/remaster more classic I hope they’ll do Bahamut Lagoon & Treasure Hunter G someday too.🙏
Reminds me of what Robot Carnival and Heavy Metal did by combining various animators/studios.
I love this graphic style. I can't for the future release of Dragon Quest III. One game I hope to be remastered someday is Xenogears.
Xenogears is still very replayable today, it still looks gorgeous. Just have an upscaler like Retrotink and you're golden.
ONLY problem I had was the robot's walk speed. Seriously why. Also, the Wild West dialog is probably some of the best dialog I've seen written in an RPG ever and equally well voice acted. I want more games with writing like that.
I've played ALMOST all of the SNES original (and am currently replaying it with the intention of finishing it for real this time) and it honestly just blows me away how creative and unique it is. It almost feels like every single aspect of Live A Live was built at least in part with the express intention of interrogating and expanding what a JRPG can even BE. The combat system is fascinating and enjoyable, existing in the same ballpark as SRPGs and... Mystery Dungeon game combat? but that in practice doesn't feel quite like either. The replacement of an MP system with variable charge times for different moves allows for spam-discouraging drawbacks to powerful abilities without the risk of making the player stingy to use anything at all besides each character's basic attack, and interacts well with the tactical spatial elements to the combat.
Of course, the game's calling card is the myriad different scenarios, like an anthology of JRPG short stories across wildly different time periods and parts of the world. What's especially fascinating is that, especially for 1994, absolutely NONE of the base scenario options take place in "standard" JRPG settings, and when you unlock the chapter that DOES... well, let's just say it makes up for that by being nonstandard in other ways. Each chapter also has a unique gameplay structure, from Twilight of Edo's ridiculously-dense stealth mission that offers a ton of freedom as to how exactly you want to play it, to the Wild West's emphasis on light puzzle elements through which you try to debuff the scenario boss fight as much as possible before it starts (or do nothing and flex by taking down the boss at full power), to the Distant Future's nearly-combatless spooky psychological survival horror adventure game atmosphere. Live A Live was honestly really ahead of its time in terms of just how much, and how purposefully, it pushed the boundaries of its genre (and, in some ways, of video games in general), and I'm really glad the remake is finally earning the game some long-overdue time in the limelight.
I played the demo on switch and it was really good! I never played the original But very well made game. The art style is 👌🏼
The game got a fan translation played it ages ago on an emulator same with bahamoot lagoon that game is a gem
To be honest, they have to do a remake to chrono trigger. Its still one of the best jrpgs they ever made.
Great video, been loving live a live! Any chance on doing some xenoblade content in the future?
How long are each characters' stories?
They vary from chapter to chapter, but for the initial chapters you're looking at 1-3 hours each.
Thank you for your review, sir. LAL has always been my favorite game from I played it.. a fantastic JRPG, very modern to be released in 1994 to then have this remake. It surprises me that various types of games are born from a JRPG as a concept.
I know it's not so long, but it's one of those games you have to try in your life for how peculiar it is. It really has the makings of becoming a cult like a final fantasy (of the loved ones) or an earthbound in my opinion. He has his flaws, yes, but without him many of the games that came after would never have existed, such as Chrono trigger or Undertale.
It goes without saying that this blond in my pic is one of my favorite characters as well as one of the most interesting of the whole game as a concept of "protagonist". (I won't give you too many spoilers hehe)
I am so pleased that this rare little gem is gaining recognition among the masses. It really deserves so much love and devotion for how much it excites and carries a wonderful message at the end of the game.
-Best regards form a boy, a big fan of Oersted, who likes to play him around youtube and beyond.
