We french are very proud of our traditionnal Opinels. Whenever you offer one, you must receive a coin in exchange. It is an old tradition so that the knive "will not cut the friendship". Yes it is a peasant knife, it was made by and for mountaineers, farmers, loggers, hardy folks, -in a word "outdoorsmen" (Saint Jean de Maurienne, the hometown of Opinel is in the french high alps, a rustic place).
More than a good knife, it is sort of an emblem for us, a reminiscence of the "old ways". I'm glad it finally made its way in the CZcams knife circle, where it has the exposure it deserves.
Hi I read your commet on you tube about the opinel knife I too am a big big fan best knife ever in my opintion but you said an old tradition of giving a coin when getting a knife I have done that for my whole life but it was my mother who told me the sale thing do you have any idea where that tradition came from please I would love to know manythanks simon.
pichnoufblues ujunnn...
If one is in the USA, where is the best place to get a No. 10? Thank you.
The chinese have the same tradition as well
not in the "hautes alpes" in the Savoie !
My Japanese grandma who lives in France and the US gave me an Opinel when I was little. :)
There is something really special about these knives. One bonus to these is that they are very much non offensive. No one would bat an eyelid if you had of these on your belt. They are 'Gentleman's' knife and great as a EDC. They take a very nice edge as well.
Thanks for posting this up!
living in Los Angeles, one thing I appreciate is the fact that the locking mechanism isn't immediately obvious and since the size 10 is about as small as I would want to go with big hands and carpal tunnel syndrome--the size makes it easier to use
Absolutely love opinel knives. Always have the #6 in my pocket. Some of the sharpest and most used knives I own.
I just bought mine today : an Opinel n°9 carbone (9 cm blade, non stainless-steel) for just 8€ (i'm french).
Mine came quite sharp actually : with a bit of work on it, i plan to get a razor sharp blade.
Here in France, the Opinel is just a classic piece of knife (un classique de la coutellerie).
And by the way, the Savoie is a region in the french Alps.
A Opinel 8 is a must have in Europe.
I have come to the conclusion that I should have just purchased an opinel, mora, victorinox sak and a leather man multitool and that's all I would ever need. They are all functional classics that work better than anything else. l could have saved a fortune buying unnecessary unused gear.
I've been a knife enthusiast and collector for over 30 years and only just yesterday, got one, the stainless No 8. I am truly surprised how much I'm impressed with it & love it. Great video, as always!
Along with the Mora knives, the Opinel is an inexpensive and such useful folder. You gotta love them. I buy lots of them as gifts for my friends in Brazil as they are hard to find there. Great review!
I'm with you on that. Thanks.
+The Late Boy Scout what guide on the work sharp did you use
+1
now that is an edc, a proper pocket knife. Does everything you need from a pocket knife and no big deal if it gets broken or lost!
I once used it to open the access hatch of a huge liquid gas container on a huge NLG ship. After getting all the bolts out, the hatch would not open, I stuck the Opinel between the sean and the door and with a small adjustable wrench I pried the hatch open... It saved the day...
Opinels also tend to be accepted by people who are scared about pocket knives
You said everything
@@restorecustom2746 what's your point?
Maybe they are a bit easier to get over here in Europe than in the US of A or Canada, but the fascination almost stays the same... You gotta love these little helpers!
I was a bit surprised that your Opinels were dull. They usually come razor sharp out of the box. The carbon steel ones even more than the Inox (short for inoxydable = non rusting/stainless). I hope people now don't think they'd have to sharpen any Opinel before use...
The olive handle is by far my favourite!
Thanks a lot and greetings from Germany!
I love the look of that Olive handle as well.
amazon has them
Amazon has them in a variety of sizes
I've owned these very knives for several decades now...I've always found them to take and hold a edge quite well and never fail to do the job required of them. My 1st Opinel (#10) cost me $6 bucks! I suppose they cost more theses days, but really love mine!
Purchased 2 of these circa late 70's....1 has gone missing..moved 4 times in that period...1 remains in my garage as a basic utility blade....mine does not lock in the closed position...locks open only..great little knife..my recollection is fuzzy but I think the price was around 10 bucks or less 1977 or so...first review I have seen on these..very interesting.
Amazing how the price hasn't changed much after all those years.
Opinel No.8 is the most classic and probably the knife that most buyers will go toward, but consider Opinel's less common designs. I picked myself up an Opinel Mushroom Knife, just because. Who else makes a knife like that? Really unique. I might never use it, but it hits a certain 'cool' switch for me.
You should try the Coghlan's branded Opinels. They are still made by Opinel, but they have slimmer handles, like the gardening and slimline knives. However, they have the normal blades. They also seem to be a little cheaper for some reason. I got my no 7 for $10 Canadian. They come in 7, 8, and 9 carbon.
INOX = inoxydable ( in French ) = oposite of oxydable.
Oxydable ( in French ) = Capable of being converted into an oxide.
Both are adjective.
I've got an opinel number 9 and it is my go to folding knife, I use it for everything and I always carry it, when I'm outdoors... The opinel knives are a very good job, done by my southern neighbours!
SAVOIE FRANCE: "Savoie" is the Alpes mountains french region where Opinel factory is located. ;o)
Such a simple and classic knife, love the olive wood handle, also have the bubinga wood with a polished blade and the kitchen knives, great video.
Very good review of a classic knife
I have the 6 and 8 you are showing, no name on the handle. Both were sharp enough for me, but you guys know this stuff better....nice review
I just flat out love these knives! They are the epitome of the K.I.S.S. rule. I gave out a couple of the presentation ones I had engraved for christmas.
I gave all four of my nephews an Opinel for Christmas last year and the 10 and 12 are comfortable for me to pocket carry
Those are cool knives. I like the classic look they have.
My buddy just gave me a #8 Inox. I haven't taken it to the work-sharp yet, but I carved the spine side of the handle down to make it more ergonomic for me, then sanded and stained it. I'm going to get a carbon one to patina for sure!
Cool Video Dude. Lovely Knives. Keep up the great work. Nick.
My latest No#8 Inox was sharp out of the packet and scary sharp after a quick strop. Keep it in a pouch with a carving jack and between those two small knives you can do a lot.
Fine review, and I especially appreciated the Hi-Power in the segment intro.
I have an Opinel #9 in carbon steel and I adore it. I use it for peeling fruits a lot and the natural patina on the blade is starting to look like gun bluing. These are very light and you won’t even know you have it in your pocket.
A simple no nonsense knife, not sure on the model number I own but I did but it come with an Opinel leather pouch that fit's the knife absolutely perfect, simple design, it work's and is easy to keep sharp - unlike some "tactical" folder's in the collection. Knife brand's come and go but these have been around for as long as I have been going into "Outdoor's" store's and that's like over 30 year's !
i have 3 of them and mine all came sharp.love them
.oh the # 6 is the smallest locking one i believe
True
I’ve had a #9 for decades and keep it with me all the time
Been meaning to pick one of these up.
I've got a opinel chef knife, folding filleting knife, corkscrew knife, these are just some of the other ranges. They are kind of addictive good knives for the money and probably I use them more than the others because they are so light to carry. Great vid LBS
Excellent review video! You have made me a fan and will be purchasing some Opinel knives. Also def. going to be subscribing to your channel! Love the knife talk!
Been looking at these they seem worth while.
I got the opinel No 8 black oak yesterday (October 19th 2019) and I love it.
I’m thinking about buying the regular opinel 8 but with the oak handle
I like my Opinel. It's a nice break from my more usual "tactical" line up when I want to switch things a bit. It's kind of like a vintage MG roadster or Tigermoth biplane- cool in its own kind of way. Oh, and it really cuts!
This was so informative. Just bought one. Love the vids. Keep up the good work.
Thanks - EM
Thanks very much!
Opinel are the best knives. Vintage, smooth and pretty. The best size for me is the No 9.
Opinel No8's been in my edc for about 3yrs now, it was in the 1985 100 most beautiful products in the world by Victoria and Albert Museum in London
Hey the higo no kami is the opinel of japan it hasnt changed since 1896
Wooo good job Late boy Scout !! Greetings from France ;)
Thanks!
Great little knives. I really enjoy each of mine. So much so that I've given a few as gifts. The larger ones are a bit bulky & cumbersome in the pocket, but in cargo pants/shorts it's not a big deal.
I have given several as gifts as well
The weight of opinel makes me reach out for it over other heavier options. They are simply gorgeous tools to use regardless of price point.
they are great for backpacking
It is nice to see diversity in your reviews. Thank you for the video.
Thank you for watching!
I carry a carbon no.6 and the two things that really stick out (other than it’s insane sharpness) are the locking mechanism and its weight. The locking mechanism is just rock solid in both directions...once it’s locked open, you might as well have a “normal” knife. Concerning its weight, the thing is just nonexistent in my pocket. That’s something that’s really important to me. If I’m gonna carry something like a knife, I don’t wanna be constantly reminded of it. I just want it to kind of “be there”.
Great...Now I want one
i bought a #10 in paris, very happy with it :) acutally i am now considering buying the collector's case and modify some of them ;)
Great review. I just ordered a #8 last night, but after watching this maybe I should have gotten the #7. We'll see when it gets here. I don't want to big of a knife.
Opinel no 9 has been my edc along with the sak wegner classic 18. Never needed anything else.
Thanks
Thanks for the review. I ordered two carbon models, a 6 and a larger 9 that I found dirt cheap (8.50$).
wojtekimbier so did I today. Same two
Thanks you!!
Great review, as usual. Longtime viewer, new subscriber. Now, I'm going after an Opinel knife. Thanks, Happy Alamo Day!
I love the opinels...and they are nice to modification stuff
Bushcrafters will like this knife. There are, quite literally, 3 pieces of metal in these knives: the blade, the bolster at the top, and the locking collar. And the locking collar isn't even necessary for its function. Everything else, you can carve yourself from scratch. People use to call these "penny knives" back in the days when people would still have to maintain their knives for years instead of buying news ones all the time and it shows in the construction.
nathanatramp Yep, back in the late 1800s when people made like 3-5 cents an hour, the knives literally sold for a penny.
They were a good deal even back then. Very basic but the blade itself was/is good quality, so it was common among the working class of the time because of that reason.
I like to collect knives but the opinel is one i carry every day and wont be without. The carbon steel is awesome. The flat grind is easy to sharpen too and i like it a lot better than the scandi grind on moras.
I love my Opinel knives. The one thing I don't like about them is that since there are no liners, in high-humidity environments, the wood absorbs moisture and swells. Mine have actually been difficult to open at times, because of this.
..they can also be grided to make a scrapping tool when working on engines etc...
I also have an opinel, no8 carbone and mine came very sharp. Also, i think the blade grind is full flat, not convex.
If you seriously like knives and you don’t own one or more Opinel knives you’re not seriously into knives. Low tech, low price but a lot of character and you can beat the crap out of it. They’re tougher than you might think.
I bought a no9 a little bit ago and the edge was unfinished. I spent a good hour putting an edge on it. Weird. Super sharp now though.
I'm french and I have an opinel since I'm a child ^^
I have a couple, now I want the slimmer model I think it is a 12 for a fishing knife.
I love the exotic wood handles' look, but bums me out that they typically are only available with stainless blades. For me, part of the Opinel charm is getting a gradual patina on the carbon steel with use. Gives it that extra rustic aesthetic.
I too have had many arrive dull out of the box. Luckily they're easy to sharpen, and I enjoy getting them shaving sharp.
A good minimal mod could be taking a dremel to the handle to make 2 small noches and install that wire style pocket clip from Spyderco. Like on the dragonfly 2.
Very nice review, now can you please review the Opinel no 13 ?
These are great knives. Don't get them wet as the wood swells making blade extraction very difficult. The opinel numbers 2,3,4, and 5 are non locking.
Nice knives. Gotta be high carbon. I just bought the No 12 folding knife.
I just bought a No. 10 stainless as a camping knife, mine came sharp.
merci à tous,vous aimez les couteaux français!!!good
i like too!im french men who live in thailand
me,i like your guns!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!cannot have here!!
Good review. I believe the sizes smaller than 6 don’t have the locking ring. FYI
$15 tops... for the beechwood or other basic options. the ebony ones, and others like that will set you back much more, but honestly, they're all beautiful.
I love this. This could be "Grandpa's knife"
My Kitchen growing up had a couple of these in the drawer. They were never closed and we treated them like a regular kitchen knife. I cut the hell out of myself w/ them a couple times. Never sharpened or treated well and they were always the go-to blade if a sharp one was needed. (I'm guessing they were sharpened once by someone who knew what they were doing)
they come in walnut as well
if you like knives with a classy look that have a history go check out laguiole knives.
also from france.. only make sure you get the right quality cause there are cheap ones that are only called laguiole but arent very good in quality ;)
I really want a #6 carbon with olive wood handle but ive never been able to find this combo.
No only stainless
Hi,
as I'm french I know them quite well :-), for us it is as common than a kitchen knife.
They are produced for more than a century now, so yes it is a "classic"
Originaly they were a simple folding knife with no lock, the "viroloc" came in 1955. The idea is quite genious as it is a simple metal sheet wrapped around the blade axis
As you said , once correctly sharpened (and you can made them very very sharp), there are very few knife than can beat them in term of cutting
An as they are inexpensive and light, I can put one mostly everywhere I need (camping car, garage, bag, etc..)
Of course they are not "survival knives" , so cutting wood by strinking on the blade is not an option :-)
The nr 5 doesn't have the lock. It has a lock from 6 and up. I love how light they are. You don't feel it in your pocket
I love my Opinels. So fast to sharpen to a razor edge and throw a spark like no ones business. Gotta keep them DRY though! The carbon blades will rust if it rains outside... Even if they are inside. And if they get damp enough the handle can swell and make opening and closing the blade a real b****. Keep em dry and oiled and they are awesome though.
UrbanSuburban just put a patina on them...will protect the blade from rusting
great job scout!
some might roll a bit with first use, because they're actually zero ffg
i literally have dozens of these lying around...
in all sizes and varieties. gifted a lot of them, always with the outcome of happy people :)
if i find a nice display case to hang on the wall i get new, unused no.08s in walnut, olive, beech, oak, bubinga and maybe even ebony.
and: THE WOOD SWELLS WHEN IT'S HUMID! so the blade might be almost impossible to get out, so careful!
I've heard that about the wood handles. Fortunately I live in a pretty dry climate, so I probably wont have to deal with that.
***** Savoie is In the french Alps, so they know humidity. Fortunately, Opinel took care of the problem in the knife design.
Whenever you have difficulty opening the knife, unlock it, grab the upper part of the handle and tap the point of the handle on a table or a tree as you would do whith a little hammer. The blade will show so you can pinch it to open.
Probably make a great gardening knife.
Im dream the tactical version .... all black
the carbon steel version is actually very tough, I don't hesitate even with wood.
they can take the abuse.
The stainless version on the other hand, I'm not so sure.
great picnic/lunchbox knife though, super lite weight.
I don't know why yours came blunt because when I ordered mine it came as shaving sharp.
cutting cheese with a 6 is a rare pleasure.
Love my 6,best food prep/EDC money can buy.
I really like opinels my not be in fashion but they work
How do you suggest sharpening your knives? I have seen that wetstones work very well except i don't know how to use them and they are bloody expensive.
The carbone one is beech, carbone is simply a carbon blade as opposed to stainless steel, also do not know where you got yours but mine came razor sharp.
..another thought. The wood handles do swell a bit when wet.
Those don't have stains. They are different kinds of wood. Olive, Oak, Birch, Beech, Walnut, etc.
The only thing I don't like with my nr. 8 olive wood handle ,inox ,is that letters are loosing ,putting it in original leather sheath !! Btw got it in wooden box !! Cheers ,Josko
Nice review. I have always overlooked the opinels in favor of fancier knives, but I cannot say it has benefited me at all.
one advantage of the Opinel is that they can be used without scaring people especially if you learn to open them one handed
Nice review.Savoy sa-voy is how it's pronounced since you questioned your pronunciation.I love Opinel knives. Have a great day
PRONOUNCED like this Savoie " sAAvoua" with the mountain pronounciation
Opinel knives are the only knives i use carving so cheap and comfortable to use the only thing i would say is i snapped the tip of one of mine last week and 2 of my friends have done the same so be carefull there.
if i buy them in france they are crazy sharp, maybe they make them blunt for overseas?
