I'm 62 years old and retired Over the Road Truck Driver. There wasn't no internet, satellite TV and cable TV was limited to certain areas. It was just radio stations and the signal was weak, unless you got near the city and town. Theses small town play a lot of Motown music at night. I brought a lot cheap soul music in these small towns. The music was on cassette tapes. It made it easy to travel over the road. Theses artists have no idea how they change the world and touch everyone hearts 💕. They just don't make great music like that anymore. I brought a lot of Albums, 8-Track tapes and cassette tapes. These artists was a genius. Generations wealth and music is the only thing you should pass on to your children and grandchildren ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉

I bought one of his singles. "Hang on in There Baby" on MGM. I think he did an outstanding job producing "Someday We'll Be Together" for The Supremes, a Motown classic. It is possible his career did not take off because there were too many similarities in the style to Barry White. You can hear the similarity in some of the singles sampled in this video. Sounds like he had quite a career as a producer anyway.

Johnny Bristol never quite achieved his potential as a solo artist. I remember Hang On In There Baby when it was released back in 1974, here in the UK it was a MASSIVE hit reaching No3 on the UK Pop Singles chart. At the same time the Osmonds were at No1 with Love Me For A Reason and Tom Jones had just released his version of Memories Don't Leave Like People Do. It looked as if the devastatingly handsome former Motown staff writer was about to become a soul superstar. But that never happened. Johnny failed to follow up his initial success and the momentum quickly ground to a halt. Despite releasing quality material it just failed to click with the public beyond his core soul base. The man had the looks, the talent and the voice. What went wrong? Listening to his recordings today it really is a mystery as to why he failed to capitalise on his initial success. Johnny Bristol deserves to be remembered today.

Johnny Bristol wrote a handful of hits for Jr. Walker. "Someday We'll Be Together" were intended for Jr. Walker to record at first but he wasn't too thrilled about it, then produced it on The Supremes and became a blockbuster smash.

@@anclark2063 That's true!! Because at first he didn't want to sing the song "Shotgun". He invited a guy named Fred Paton to do the vocals on the song, but Fred didn't show up for the session. The song almost didn't happen until Berry Gordy suggested that he sing it and the rest is history.

@@anclark2063 Yeah but What Does It Takes was a whole different formula of what he was accustomed to playing. See Jr. Walker was down home, soulful doing all of that yelling on a record, but What Does It Takes was soft and sweet. Jr. Walker didn't record with strings and background vocals on his earlier records. Come See About Me (Junior) was the first song that featured background vocals.

Fun fact Someday isn't really a Supremes song as it only has Diana Ross singing on it. Berry Gordy intended it to be her first solo single but was sure it would go #1 and so he decided it would make a great swan song for her Supremes exit. Also Johnny is actually singing on the record. It's said Diana was tired so during recording , so Johnny got in the studio to sing along with her( Say it, say it, say it again) to ramp up her energy.
