    Honestly, the problems with the production never bothered me too much, even the voices were something I sort of excused since it was the first Dalek story in so long. That said, the special edition is a version I never knew I needed, it makes a great story even better. I tend to watch the special edition whenever I feel like watching the story these days, but I sometimes go back to the original, it's good to appreciate the work that got replaced from time to time, even if some of it isn't the best.

    I do remember hearing somewhere Katy Manning describing not enjoying making this serial because of the absurd fact that they had to make it look like the house was surrounded with only two (drone) Daleks.

    In the making of the special edition they actually make it clear that the Daleks aren't CGI. They knew on their budget they would suck, so they actually used a real prop and similar duplication techniques used in The Parting of the Ways

    1.18K subscribers The Gold Supreme Dalek in "Day of The Daleks" and "Frontier in Space" should be brought back again someday eventually as he is one of my many all time favorite Supreme Dalek characters. (although it's probably unlikely?)

    At the time we kids were grateful to see the daleks again after a long absence. And a rumoured complete disappearance.
    Aubrey Woods was really very good as the quisling. I learned the meaning from this story. It was also great seeing Jon & Katy riding those fat tire bikes!

    I actually think Briggs' Dalek voice is a bit too much for these Daleks. The voices in Planet are the best of the Pertwee era. The original production didn't bother me either, it was only when the special edition came out that I found out there were only originally 3 props (and I'd only recently seen it, it wasn't like I hadn't seen it since 1972).

    I like what they improved with the special edition.... except the voices. No hate towards nick briggs but it just doesn't work for me. • @dalekbumps
      @dalekbumps  Před rokem +1

      fair enough, I suppose I should have elaborated more on the point about the original voices, the sound of them is decent but it's the way the actors deliver the lines that makes them poor in my opinion. The infamous example is the "whoever is operating the time machine is an enemy of the Daleks, all enemies of the Daleks must be destroyed" - in the original version, it sounds like the voice actor gets bored halfway through reading the line, it's just a really stunted delivery

    • @IAmPegasus
      @IAmPegasus Před rokem

      @@dalekbumps it was really only that one scene it seemed to drag. Later scenes were much sped up. I heard the reason for the slowness was because they had to match the voices with the head lights which were unusually slow in this scene.

  • @projectdalekmark
    @projectdalekmark Před rokem +7

    I never had a problem with the original voices. Once again Nick did his monotonous generic Dalek voice that not only bores me but he didn't even match it up to the energy of the actors reacting to the original voice, resulting in a detached, out of sync, dubbed performance.

    • @10thdoctor15
      @10thdoctor15 Před rokem +6

      Probably because he was recording loads at once, rather than feeding off the energy of the actors on set, but I agree, the 'modern' voice doesn't seem to fit these Daleks.

    I just watched these episodes on Pluto TV, and I was saying to myself "there's no way the special effects were that good back in the 70s". So I did a search, and sure enough yeah they added CGI which I don't like. Yes, technically it looks better, but I'm a stickler for originality. I'm a big Star Trek the original series fan, but I don't like the updated CGI in the episodes. Same thing with adding CGI to the original Star Wars movies. I prefer the nostalgia of the original as it was intended at the time........ Imagine watching The wizard of Oz that is totally augmented with CGI,......... For example, the original special effects of the tornado scene. Imagine re doing it with CGI. it would just overshadow the brilliance the original special effects. Just because you can do something doesn't necessarily mean you should. Sometimes it takes away from the original brilliance.,........ Even if the original effects look cheesy by today's standards

  • @TheNickofTime
    @TheNickofTime Před rokem

    I find the special edition to be a thoroughly mixed bag. The word I’d use is ‘misguided.’ Some of the VFX, like the animated window smashing shot or the new disentigration effects, are so blatantly modern CGI that it really smacks me in the face with their inachronism instead of letting me sink into the narrative.
    The new Dalek voices sound very close-mic and of a higher sound quality than the rest of the audio, and the result is no less jarring than the mediocrity of the originals was. It sounds like new series Daleks were just plopped on top of a classic episode, which is a shame, because the extras mention how they were specifically trying to avoid that problem. I don’t think they succeeded.
    Lastly, lack of restraint with the new effects even undermines some directorial tricks. In the original story, every time the view switches to the Daleks watching a character over a hidden camera, the transition is seamless. The payoff for this is that by the end of the story, if the camera starts slowly zooming out, it creates a paranoid suggestion of the Daleks watching even if it’s a perfectly innocent camera move. (One example is the Doctor finding the ladder in the tunnel in episode four: I’m almost certain the slow zoom out which frames his face in the rectangle of the ladder frame is a deliberate fake-out of the security camera shot the episode has taught us to expect.) By adding a cheesey scanning effect to the screens, the special edition completely spoils that paranoia by making it obvious when we’re seeing from the Daleks’ POV and when we’re not.
