  • In 1953, Harvey's Department Store in Nashville started a new tradition by presenting a live Nativity Scene in Centennial Park. NPT's popular MEMORIES OF NASHVILLE documentary takes a looks back.

I can't tell you what memories this video sparks--as a kid in Nashville in the '60s we went to see this wonderful Nativiity scene at least once every holiday season. I understand why it was stopped, and I'll say that even as an non-traditional believing adult, and also believing in the absolute necessity of the separation of church and state (for both their respective sakes), I really don't see the harm in this and wish it was there still. ~~Thanks for this warm memory!

Gee! I miss the Nativity, the music, the cold, and Christmas in the air. Cincinnati bought it and it finally just disintegrated. Sad stuff!

My folks took us EVERY Christmast to see this. I remember it feeling surreal. It broke all our hearts when it was no longer displayed.

Where is this Nativity Scene today? If it still exists, I would give anything to see it restored and featured again in the park!

It crumbled over the years and no longer exists ...

Folks, the materials began to deteriorate. The figures were sold because of the awful projected cost of restoration. So they were sold to someone that seemed likely to do right by them. Unfortunately they were put on display a couple of years in their new home and allowed to decay beyond repair. The decision had nothing to do with diversity or separation of church and state. Not speculation, I know this first hand.
