POSSIBLE lightbulb in a cage

- This is another object of interest that serves little purpose, beyond making people wonder how it was done. I didn't make a proper build video, simply because 90% of the build is drilling (which is somewhere between paint drying and hospital waits with respect to entertainment value), so this video is just an explanation of the process that I used.
Construction:
If you use a large Forstner bit, be sure to make relief holes with a smaller bit, to help speed the process along by removing the bulk of the material. Use a pilot bit first, to define the centers of the holes, and then you can simply rotate around the four sides, keeping the depth drilled at about the same. It's pretty time consuming. Wear glasses when you push the bulb into place; having one pop during insertion will scare the ghost out of your machine. Oh, and once again: FREEZING IT FIRST WILL NOT WORK. Tight tolerance fits for bearings and such can be assisted by such a temp reduction process, but the amount of shrinkage is an order of magnitude or two smaller than what is necessary in these wood-stretching cases.
Advanced challenge: My original sketch for this project was titled "bulb in a helix." The premise was to drop the bulb in a long, oversized cradle and then twist it 90°. This would cause the gap between the parallel support bars to shrink, trapping the bulb in a helical structure that would further shrink as it dries. I didn't get around to trying it yet.

The video you did putting the pinball into the block was the very first video of yours that I watched. That's the one that made me subscribe. Thanks for that :)

You always come up with the most unique videos. Thanks again.
I missed your videos. Glad to see you back.
Dude so glad you started making videos again I always enjoy them.
Ken
The video quality has really stepped up recently. Great job as usual!
Neat :) I had seen the ball bearing one but using a light bulb elevates it to a whole new level. Thanks for sharing.
Impressed as always. I'm also gald that you still make videos. You deserve better than the youtube trolls.
Dude you are so legit don't stop what you do
That golf ball file though... :D
This was pretty cool, keep up the good work.
I'm contemplating using your inspirational quote around 7/10 of the way through he video as my senior quote.
Why cant there be more good channels with humour like this one
excellent video as usual.
That's awesome!
No other CZcams channel has made me search for half an hour trying to find 3D glasses that went with a toy I had 10 years ago
sweet
Keep on trucking ! (from France)
That quote is definitely my life motto now
I liked the video just because of the inspirational quote in the middle of it.
I really like your Videos!greetings from germany 😉
Amazing channel bro please keep it coming
Just Great!!!
your humor slays me
man ur awesome honestly >3 i fell in love with ur vids keep going man
+uchiha sami Thanks!
Awesome channel
Cool explanation! took me a while to stop the video in the right spot xD
I really liked this video :) I did enjoy it.
Great. I wasn't sure about the _more explain, less build_ format.
Yes, a new video! :D
Goddamn, I already love this channel tbh
Clever title :)
Thanks. I've taken a lot of heat over the years for using that word. It's as if people didn't already realize that the impossible was, by definition, not possible. I think that well is pretty much dry now, anyhow.
+pocket83 i actully read is as impossible
+Arjen Hartink - Me too.
Excellent video! I will have to try that.
Do read the descriptidee-do if you do.
"Pretty bright idea" that one was great
Hi Doug & Sofia, bit late but we just watched your "live " show, Really enjoyed it, many thanks 😅 UK
I think you may have dialed the wrong number.
illuminating
Nice!!
Clever product placement
amazing
Nice!
love the illusion cubes lol
Good to see you back pocket!! Well done!
Thanks, but why does everyone keep saying that? I've been out on good behavior for quite awhile now.
+pocket83 been meaning to say it for a few videos now...
Oh! Well, thanks. It's nice to be here!
I love your hidden title cards
I'd recommend an LED lightbulb. Less likely to break, you can plug it in without worry about the heat, and it'll be at least 20 years before it goes out. You can also get fancy types that look like edison bulbs.
really cool stuff... and i knew how the vise was used for the lightbulb trick.. lol.. awesome stuff tho.. your a master with wood i can see..
how? wow! I never would have thought
Watching this video fills you with determination....
Haha Thumbs up for that bright idea pun.
nice Video
Nice
Awesome idea! It'd be cool to make a lamp out of it by drilling a hole in the bottom and providing the power through there. Maybe a LED bulb would be better to avoid the heat damaging the wood.
Agreed. I still may drill holes in the top and bottom, but I wanted to film this first.
Can you try to make a hole at the top of the wooden casing so that you can plug it in while its standing up straight. You could then hang it in a shed or workplace.
That would be awesome to make a lamp stand with that.
I have only watch 2 of your videos so far this one and the one with the 4 pols in between the 2 pieces of wood with the ring puzzle. Anyways you are a very impressive individual and very talented. I throughly enjoy what you do. I found it smart and funny in the other videos description where you let the trolls have it in the most intelligent manner. Also the codes you flash on the screen for a tenth of a second in each video are probably my favorite thing about these videos. And the reason I am commenting. I hardly even comment but the "don't forget to drink your ovaltine" was freaking epic. Do all your videos have a subliminal code puzzle? Anyways keep up the good work. I wish I could hang out with you and build some stuff with you. You have inspired me to start making some junk in my garage.
You could use one of those "Magic light bulbs" which have batteries inside and light up when you hold the base, but they look like regular lightbulbs
Also with the helix idea, try and put a fluorescent lightbulb in the middle instead. You know the spiraly ones:)
What type of wood is compatible/necessary for the "bending" requirement?
Pockets I am going to do the maxwell house illusion container you have sitting on the bench . I am going to write the word Illusion on tape and apply it to the container but I will let the coffee in just to arouse curiosity maybe when it is empty I will get springy worms lol . Excellent work on explaining the star and doing it.
Ha. There actually are illusion cubes in that can. But I'm pretty far from releasing that video. Let's just allow the curiosity to build for a bit!
excellent though !
Glad to see a new puzzle video! A toy or game for the next one?
Sure, but I try to space them out. Like, for example, I haven't done a build for a bit, so that's next. And then maybe a toy, and then maybe some math. If I do too much of one, I lose even more interest- at least, that's my working theory- variety with a spritz of unpredictability.
You should make a video on how to make homemade 3d glasses, I managed to make a very bad prototype using a piece of blue glass from a cup and a smoothed out see-through candy wrapper...
I've made about forty golf balls in a smaller cage...worked fine. My first attempt at the light bulb with indicated block dimentions and Forstner diameter bit resulted in broken glass all over the floor and cracked block. I have made a second block 3 1/8 x3 1/8 square using a 3 1/4" Forsner bit, wood is poplar, in boiling water 15min. Sides do not bow evenly, bulb goes in some holes but not others, cracking imminet. I'm hoping pocket83 will comment...
Hi! You might be using bulbs that are thinner than what was used for the video. Poplar is certainly comparable to what I used, so I'd guess it's the bulb that's giving you trouble. Maybe try looking around for the super-cheap bulbs at a dollar store.
@@pocket83squared I am using a std LED bulb which seems pretty robust. Changing the block and bit size was done to reduce the interferance (now about 1/8" ) that has to be overcome. My concern is twofold: extreme vice presure required, and sides do not bow evenly. Am I overlooking something?
@@stevewenger7428 Let me offer the easier and more obvious (possible) solution first: Find the correct balance. If you reduce the thickness of the cage enough, eventually the 'pillars' will become flexible. The goal is thus to find the threshold, the tipping point, where you preserve maximum thickness and still get it to go. The trick is to push the materials to their limit.
Outside of that, some further refinement?
OK, maybe we're not thinking about the grain enough. The best piece of wood for this sort of thing will be one with a straight, uniform grain. Consider that if the pillars of the cage have different properties, they'll of course bend differently under identical stresses/loads. Rather than just applying a constant, uniform force, let's instead assume that we want to be able to control and direct the force that's being applied.
In theory, if one pillar starts to bend earlier than does another, it would be possible to even the force out by pressing down on the cage at different rates. Instead of the vice, you might try bar-clamping a large board to your work bench, and then tighten each of its ends appropriately. Such a setup would give you a big vise that has non-parallel jaws. It would even be possible to establish multi-axis, pinpoint control by adding a steel plate and more clamps!
@@pocket83squared Thanks for the suggestion; I've thought of this but wasn't sure how to deal with it. Please explain your steel plate idea.. I'll look for thinner, cheaper light bulbs, but GEN3 attempt will definately incorporate your suggestion with bar clamps. Since I only need to enlarge one opening to insert the bulb, bar clamps with fifferant pressures just might be the answer. The bulb in a block is just too cool to abandon; besides, I have 16 more blocks availabel from the poplar board I sawed to began with (grain runs along the long axis of the bloc).
I do, I do...enjoy.
I suggest to anyone wanting to put a finish on this to try putting the light bulb in a zip lock bag
I had guessed you used clamps set in ‘spreader mode’ but they probably would have taken too much space.
3:35 Lol, brilliant
If you put some gels or lamp paper on the sides of the cage, and it'd probably make a neat little lamp.
Nice relaxing videos to watch just before bed.
hehe you're cool fig man
anything is possible!
*but how do you get it out*
4:35 WHO!! Designed the US mains standard that allows you to, without effort, touch a hot part like that?!?
That Secret Time frame was fun, but the hard part was getting the viewer stopped on that frame. But really, couldn't you have come up with a more interesting message?
macsnafu yea
2:30
WHAT KIND OF WOOD IS THE BEST TO USE ???
damm as transitions
Pretty cool idea ! How did you make the mirror thing on your drill press ?
It's just one of those little convex truck mirrors (you could probably find one for around a buck). I epoxied a magnet to it.
Thank you !
Was hoping you would show the actual insertion of the lightbulb in that block
It's very slow going and it takes concentration. I also didn't want to make another one. Videos are lots of work, so corners get cut sometimes. Sorry.
+pocket83 No worries, still a good video and thanks for making it!
I'm going to do this with an egg!
+Savvas Papasavva boil the wood. Insert fresh egg. keep it in fridge. boil all together when hungry. extract boiled egg. nobody will steal your eggs!!
+Cactus! workshop or they could just steal the whole thing and bust the egg open while it's trapped still xD
+Savvas Papasavva boil the egg, insert fresh wood.
+Savvas Papasavva Don't forget to share....I enjoy both of you guys videos because of the calm tone of voice ya'll have. Relaxes me as well. Thanks.
nooice
anybody else saw the code in 2:29?
Ka Cheung Fu Moto z force has an invert colors option. It popped the message out clearly, but nobody cares..
2:30
using the techniques you mentioned to morph the word is it possible to recreat an impossible shape a penrose triangle maybe?
Do you mean like the helix I was talking about? I've thought about it. A "real" Penrose triangle would make a great video. The parts would be too long to boil, though.
+pocket83 Well whatever it is, looking forward to your future projrcts!
This would be cool with a battery powered LED bulb, too.
2:29 it say's: Nobody cares that you were clever enough to crack this code without using 3D glases. Really?
It's going to be a butt to change that lightbulb. I would use an LED one if I was going to make a light (though it would not be as fun as the older bulbs)
I was proud for myself when I figured it out though :(
Why don't you just freeze the lightbulb? ;)
Joking aside, I absolutely love the video and the solution! Keep it up!
HEY!
lol. Thanks.
pocket83 you based in America or UK and do you not sell these items
secret time is on 2:29
I CARE!!!
You should totally turn that into a lamp. Cover the faces with paper and drill a hole in the bottom.
the more you know!
Lmao that message though
hmm, with an LED bulb and installing a socket at the bottom that would make a neat lamp
Robert Cornelius thus the point of using a low heat, low powered led bulb. (Well made ones will last a very long time)
LIKE
Or you can put a little water on the wood and wait till it will expend
100!
Could you not just use clamps while the bulb is still in boiling water?
Sure. If you like twisting clamps that are submerged in boiling water, which I do not.
did anybody see the secret mess sage?
Well a great way to take the light bulb out is to throw it
The more you know
Why do you sound so aggressive when you talk! Lol. Good video.
Am i the only one hear his voice like Teery in Batman Beyond? It was similar
What is the boiling point of wood?
In centigrade, it's just potato. That's why Imperial often seems so much more complicated.
+pocket83 Cool, Thanks!Tomato(°F) = Potato(°C) × 1.8 + 32
Arrghh! Stupid conversions!
just put a light bulb seed in the middle and let it grow, ez
noice
NOICE!!!
but I did it without them
