This sounds so interesting! I’ve been meaning to check out some more gothic horror 🤔
The title story is so very good and does things I did not expect.
I listened to it again while driving some of the family to the art museum last week. They (4 young women 15 - 25) were so invested in the first part that they insisted on continuing to listen when we got home.

Oh, what a coincidence! I'm also uploading a video on a horror/thriller novel today! But it seemed you like yours more than I liked mine, haha. So glad you read this, and enjoyed the titular story! It's so bizarre, isn't it? Now you know what I meant about Engstrom making you unsure about the direction she's taking. At least you can say you didn't see the stories going where they did, even in "Beauty Is!" The second story definitely isn't as strong, but I still like it. I honestly still get chills thinking about certain scenes from the first one though. The floorboards scene, ohmigod o.O;;

I believe I edited out some of my talk about “Beauty is…”, oh well. It was definitely a good story, and I really enjoy how Engstrom directed it. The meta idea of the romance distracted me. I think if I had read them in reverse order I would have felt differently, though I’m ashamed to be so easily pushed around by my expectations.
Too bad I can’t add a suggestion to try reading the last story first. (If someone reads this before the book, try that! Let me know if it helps.)
Still wonderful writing. I would absolutely read another of Engstrom’s books.

Actually, Paperbacks from Hell reprinted one of Engstrom's full novels, called Black Ambrosia. I think it's about Vampires? I hear mixed things on it though. Definitely curious to try it--it's just a matter of tracking down a copy. Maybe I can get my library to order it :) If you ever read it, be sure to do a video on it!

Engstrom wrote an effective novel in the horror field as well - Black Ambrosia. Not sure if she wrote any other books in this genre, but she is well worth reading.
A friend recommended this as well. Considering how good “When Darkness…” is I’ll have to try it.
I was impressed with how Engstrom was able to write characters who talk like people out of a Reese Witherspoon movie into such a perfectly executed piece of gothic fiction. I think it actually heightens the effect.

The second one definitely got me that way. Maybe that’s why it was hard for me, I got my hopes up, even though I knew what kind of book I was reading. 🥴
