  • Will Wilde demonstrates the Lydian mode in 12th position on a C harmonica. I will also show you how 12th position can be used for playing the major pentatonic scale, which is great for improvising over blues (as well as many other styles of music).

    Madcat Peter Ruth uses 12th on Nobodyknows you, so avoiding overblows here(in 2nd pos instead)❤
    another fine example is Dirty old Town by the Pogues, easy in 12th

    Will. This mode tutorial from part 1 to 5 has been excellent. Questions. When choosing a mode and scale to play along with a backing track.
    No matter if playing the the lower octave , mid, or upper, you don't have to play all those scale notes in sequence or even play all the notes together right ? You can play them out of the scale order, and only use a few or all just like any other improvising ? I do understand about beginning and ending on the root note. Reason I ask is that I have difficulty figuring out at times if your using all the notes and in scale sequence during your playing with the backing tracks, or are you mixing it up. Thanks. This course has been a great learning experience for me. You've really peaked my interest in learning more about the theory of music. Which helps me to understand more about why a piece is played the way it is and how it can be changed, which seems to tell me more about what I'm playing.

    • @willharmonicawilde
      @willharmonicawilde  Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks Al. Good question! No, you don't have to always play scales in sequence, otherwise everything would end up sounding the same. You can make up phrases using any of the notes in a given scale. For the purpose of demonstration in these videos I am mainly just moving up and down in sequence, so that people can grasp what is going on and tune their ear in to the scale- it's a good place to start if you are trying to familiarise yourself with a new scale, but you should try to break out of that after a while. Hope that helps.

      @@willharmonicawilde Thankyou for your answers and quick response. I totally get it. Also I do find like you say about the ears being trained with help of scale notes. My ability to differentiate between blow and draw notes is improving all the time. Your tutorials has really helped me with the ear training, among other aspects of my learning. Cheers, and good health to you 😀.

    Will I love your knowledge and playing skills .. I do sometimes feel your jamming to backing tracks is too full and continuous and would like to hear your thoughts on ways to leave holes for others to shine through, instead of as it were hijacking the given or interpreted by others melody line .. it’s a genuine question not a criticism.. and a lesson on how to,and where to, do this it would be great !

    • @willharmonicawilde
      @willharmonicawilde  Před 4 lety +3

      Thanks. Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean by that, i play in phrases and leave plenty of rests. I'm just playing to jam tracks to demonstrate ideas on the harmonica in these videos, there is no one else here to "shine through". In my band is a different matter.

      @@willharmonicawilde I agree completely, Will. I think what you do in these videos is perfect...for all levels. What you do with the backing tracks show lots of options for playing in these modes, even stuff that most players probably wouldn't do or, if so, in a more limited way than you demonstrate, like the sliding up and down that you did here. It opens me up to more, and for that I'm grateful to you, Will!

    Hey Will... I've really enjoyed your Modes videos... great information... I hope to spend a lot of time studying them !
    Wondered about the backing tracks you used in them... are they readily available ?
    Which Seydel harp are you using ? At a certain angle, the top cover plate looks like it has some sort of "studs" sticking out !
    Love my Seydel harps !

    • @willharmonicawilde
      @willharmonicawilde  Před 4 lety

      Thanks. All the backing tracks used in the videos are linked in the descrption. I usually play Seydel 1847's. The harp I'm using here is the Seydel 'all minor'. The studs you can see are magnetic sliders which allow you to downtune certain notes. I don't have any of the magnets engaged here though, so it's just in regular tuning.
