When I was a little kid in the summer of 1974 on the Vineyard, we got a phone call telling us to quickly get in the car and go to the Old Tisbury Meeting House. It was all very hush-hush, we were told not to tell anyone, just go. We got there and sat down with a quietly ecstatic small gathering, and James Taylor walked up, sat on a stool, with just a microphone and his acoustic guitar. And he played for us for a couple of hours. It was magnificent, just magnificent, and I'll never forget it.

I've seen countless concerts of a multitude of musical styles. Hard Rock, Reggae, Funk, Soul, R&B, Punk, Techno, New Wave, Blues, Jazz, etc..... But only twice was my entire heart filled with joy and emotion and both of those times was when I saw James Taylor. It's so obvious that he's humbly nervous even at this time of his life when he plays. Like it's such a big thing for him to play well for his audience and at least for me he delivered every time.

Mark Knopfler has a funny story of when he played Sultans of Swing one night and the crowd didnt seem pleased. He was speaking with his wife that night about it and she asked "did you play the twiddly bits?" He realized that he had not played the guitar solo at the very end. It's important to give your fans the same melodies they grew up with.

James has it right. People come to the show to hear their favorites sang and performed by their favorites. In the manner that makes them nostalgic and takes them back to a time and place they hold fondly in their hearts. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Now if you want to change it up feel free to do so but do it on an album. Let people find it and come to it, not replace their favorite version of it but give them a choice.

4:12 He's describing eustress vs. distress. Being able to act with eustress is a skill. If I have to give a presentation or speech or act on stage, I turn LESS awkward and more smooth... but it's because I'm nervous... It's a skill that is also useful for like an EMT or soldier. It means that you stay clear-headed in a stressful situation and make rational decisions. It's a skill you can actually develop too. Part of it is natural inclination, but if you don't start with it, that's why people have you do practice speeches in front of classes or dress rehearsals... or why first responders practice giving CPR to mannequins.... It's to train that skill to make the right decisions in those situations.

  • @ExileTheKnightsOfMaltaNow

It's funny he mentioned people wanting to hear "Fire & Ice" as it was first recorded; he didn't want to do it at all. I thought it was understandable considering how many times he had to sing it and how much he wanted to sing his new stuff; but the audience wasn't having it. My first experience ruined because of a minority of jerks. He walked off the stage. 💔
