  • At • Display Week 2024 Samsung showcased their latest innovation in micro OLED technology through eMagin's 4K micro OLED displays, which are touted as the world's best. This achievement builds on eMagin's direct patterning technology, a method where red, green, and blue OLEDs are directly patterned onto silicon wafers. This approach significantly improves brightness and power efficiency compared to traditional methods that use a white OLED with a color filter, which can waste up to 80% of the light due to inefficiencies in the color filtering process

In October 2023, Samsung acquired eMagin, a move that promises to enhance eMagin’s capabilities with access to superior materials and additional resources. This acquisition allows eMagin to further develop their direct patterning technology, aiming to meet the demanding brightness requirements for virtual reality (VR) applications. For VR headsets, companies are requesting displays that can reach 10,000 nits to ensure users can experience vivid environments, such as bright sunny beaches, with the necessary realism.
eMagin's current micro OLED display achieves about 3,000 nits, with plans to reach 10,000 nits with new materials from Samsung. These displays feature a resolution of 2500 by 2500 and a pixel pitch of 7.2 microns. The direct patterning method, which places OLEDs directly on the silicon wafer, is essential for achieving the necessary brightness and power efficiency for next-generation VR experiences.
The process involves using masks to pattern the OLEDs, a technique that eMagin has refined over the years with the help of new equipment funded by the U.S. government. This equipment is part of a broader initiative to support high-tech manufacturing in the U.S. and has accelerated eMagin's ability to produce advanced micro OLED displays. The new manufacturing tools allow for more efficient production and higher yields, a significant improvement over the older equipment used since 2011.
One of the key benefits of the Samsung partnership is the access to more efficient OLED materials. These materials include specific dopants for green, red, and blue emissions that significantly enhance the performance of the displays. By integrating these advanced materials, eMagin can produce brighter and more efficient micro OLED displays, crucial for both consumer and military applications.
Samsung's involvement also brings economic advantages, as their buying power can reduce the costs of materials for eMagin. This cost reduction is vital for scaling production and making the technology more accessible. Samsung's expertise in OLED technology and large-scale production further positions eMagin to lead in the micro display market, especially as demand for high-resolution, high-brightness displays increases.
Despite the advancements in micro OLED technology, there are still challenges, such as improving the efficiency of blue OLEDs and managing the complexities of small pixel pitches. However, eMagin is confident that their ongoing research and development, supported by Samsung's resources, will overcome these hurdles. The goal is to provide displays that not only meet but exceed the requirements for emerging applications in VR, augmented reality (AR), and beyond.
Looking forward, eMagin aims to continue innovating in the micro display space. Their strategy includes leveraging the new equipment and materials to enhance production capabilities and exploring new applications for their technology. As the market for immersive experiences grows, eMagin's micro OLED displays are well-positioned to set new standards in brightness, efficiency, and overall visual performance.

Charbax, I hope you have more vids on Samsung Display's booth. I'm particularly interested in the QD-EL display they have on the floor.

I tried to ask Samsung to film the rest of their booth but they had nobody available for me to interview. Sorry about that. I should've filmed something just by myself but I was too busy filming 50 other booths, and I kept delaying to see if I could get someone to interview.

18:10 - Most people probably don't intentionally use screens for hours unless working or 'trying' to entertain themselves, only so much is really worth watching in general (during daily life) that has real merit to it.
