Adam, as a Canadian, I love to see your development in hockey culture. When you said "why are you fighting, this was a good hit", it made me proud, glad to have you on our side.
u got it all wrong brother. they don’t fight over wether the hit is clean or not. they fight to send a message of respect they won’t put up with being pushed around. If you don’t stick up for ur teammate the other team will keep taking runs at ur guys and a star player like Kadri is at risk of getting injured by being blown up by a guy like trouba. (Exactly what happens in the video) then ur missing ur star player for who knows how long if he’s injured especially if it’s around play off time it can ruin a teams season.
4:04 - It wasn't the hit that was being penalized. It was the fight afterward. The misconduct went to a Devil player since he started the fight in response to the hit. There was nothing wrong with the hit itself.
He would have got an instigator for that no matter what time in the game it happened. The guy that laid the hit got 5 for fighting (which needs to be looked at because it's BS... he didn't have a choice but to fight). The devils player that jumped him, got 2 minutes for instigating, 5 for fighting, a 10 minute misconduct and kicked out of the game (or game misconduct).
Miles Wood said that was the hardest he’d ever been hit in his life, and that it was clean. Considering he’s a big dude himself you know Romanov is built like a truck to pull that off.
Some kids at the HMI camp in Raleigh asked him about the hit. He said it was 100% legal. It was the beginning of the End for the Canes. Slavin IS the BEST defensive defenseman in the league
5:50 Adam you're right that he's low on this hit, he toe picks a second before and is completely off balance by the time Tkachuk gets to him. At a glance in real time it looked like Tkachuk just took Eichel off of his feet with the hit, but on the slow mo you can see by the time Tkachuk gets there both of Eichel's skates are already skewed. Eichel even said after the game that it wasn't dirty despite the head contact, Tkachuk couldn't help that he basically fell head first into a hit that would have otherwise been shoulder-to-shoulder
You NEED to react to Jordon Eberle's "Can You Believe It" goal from the 2009 World Juniors semi-final match vs Russia. I would STRONGLY recommend watching both the original video AND the version without Pierre McGuire's commentary.
Fun fact is that Jordan Eberle currently plays for the Seattle Kraken and became the first Seattle Kraken player to score a hat trick in the franchise!
I would say if the hit doesn't result in an injury and isn't a dirty hit play on. If a player gets injured it's good to settle the hard feelings with a fight just to make sure it doesn't translate to more liberties being taken. That being said if it's a clean hit and the player is fine, move on.
Sadly today's game has become "annoying" as your correct a solid hit inevitably means a fight. Give the hitters in today's NHL credit that they even attempt to dish out a nice clean solid bodycheck. They know once the hit has been made the other teams skaters are immediately coming to defend there teammate who was skating with his head down.
Lord Jeezuz H loving and all his disciples! you’re frackin’ hilarious, bro. I am quite happy I stumbled onto your vids. Found ya a few weeks ago and been watching the hockey reactions you do ever since. Great vids, Lad! Shout out from New Brunswick, Canada 🍁 🇨🇦
This is hilarious. While my baud adam here is freaking out from these hits I'm just unfazed. I agree thats unless you play and/or watch a lot of hockey it can be really hard to tell what's legal. But holy it is funny to see people that play non-contact sports watch hockey cause their reactions are just priceless. Love your vids man.
Love seeing this, as a multi sport athlete (mainly liked hockey the most) I always see different sports putting each other down. And it’s funny being from all sides, because people will say “oh this is the beautiful game” and then I see the same people comment “why would I ever play X sport over X sport”
To explain, for some reason its part of the culture now to after they get clocked by a big hit. It's always been part of the game, but it was usually only reserved for when star players got hit, rookies, goalies or for retaliation for dirty hits. Now when a clean hit is throw there are often fights after. The NHL has tried to remove the fighting after clean hits by applying the instigator rule for an extra penalty to the first player instigating the fight. Cheers mate!
i have enjoyed watching you become a hockey fan keep up the good content adam. and no arena is ever louder than after a big hockey hit with a fight right after
Love your accent man :D also the real pain from the hit comes the next day / later in the night. headache, neck spine and sore traps are nasty. Also , the vest guard is designed to absorb the puck force , not 100kg guy hitting you in 30km/h speed (and your own bodyweight hitting full on the ice)... that stuff leaves anyone winded out. Head is (finally) sacred so any hit that is hitting the head first is automatically 5 + game misconduct. repetitive concussions ended many great careers :(
As a Sabres fan I was wondering if you’d be able to react to react to our announcer Rick Jeannerets best calls. He just recently passed away and he was an icon and an absolute legend in our little part of the world. The Royal Report has a nice compilation, I’m curious to see what you think about his calls.
Crazy thing is you should research the injured list after most of these hits. I’m only 2 minutes in and I’ve seen 4 hits where guys were out long term. Almost all of them missed long stretches of time. On the wood hit he went to the penalty box for the fight he had in the corner afterwards bud. Cheers
Checks are legal if they're delivered to the chest or shoulder. No head hits and no taking out the legs. These are particularly dangerous and players can get ejected. Fighting unprovoked or attacking a player will likely get you ejected and suspended.
4:05 instigator penalty for the player who dropped the gloves to fight, not the guy who made the hit. You get a penalty if you 'instigate' a fight, i.e. you drop the gloves and grab a guy who wasn't trying to fight you.
"I can't really wrap my head around what's legal and what isn't" Congratulations you're officially as knowledgeable as your average hockey fan Plays get reviewed all the time in hockey and sometimes take 10 minutes for the officials to figure out only for 50% of the fans to call in bullshit. At least you have the benefit of being unbiased for the most part.
7:29 Tkachuk broke his sternum (and possibly 4 ribs? there's been conflicting info in regards to that) when he got hit there, came back in the second period and scored a goal to force overtime where the Panthers ended up winning. He played Game 4 (this was the Stanley Cup Finals) despite not even being able to get up off his bed on his own or being able to tie his own skates.
Any time you get hit shoulder-to-chest when you don't expect it, it's not so much the pain (going full speed to zero will hurt though) but how it takes all the air out of you, leaving you breathless and unable to breathe for a few seconds. As much as it hurts to get hit, your body hitting the ice when you're not ready for it is what can really mess you up. If you don't see it coming and can't brace, you're in for the big hurt. I've seen guys take a huge open ice hit to the chest, pop up immediately, then come back to the bench and nearly or straight up pass out from lack of oxygen/shock.
The rule has been changing alot the past few years. As of now it's clean if the original point of contact is not the head. Then there is charging. But I won't confuse you with that one. Also you can not hit from behind. When the players number is facing you you can't hit him.
Yeah the fights that happen after a big hit is usually because the player that gets hit in some instances are the teams higher scoring forwards. The other players go after the guy that hit him to make a statement that he isn't going to attempt to injure him without repercussions. This also ensures that the other players on the team isn't gonna get away with hitting him again for awhile. Some of the hits are above and beyond the amount of force to take him out of the play up to and including missing quite a few games especially if a concussion is resulted. Even though hits and checks are part of the game, some players intentionally hit harder than needed, usually due to a dirty check, trip, etc. previously done in the game. It's an unwritten rule that you can check a player but never try to intentionally hurt a player unless he deserved it. If a player does, you can bet he will be on everyone on the opposite team's crosshairs and will be hurt in response. Also most hitters will wait until the hittee is aware he's about to get hit so he can brace himself. Only dirty players will hit the hittee on the blind side or when the hittee has his head down. Instigator penalties are usually awarded to the first player that starts a fight with the guy that laid the hit. Instigator penalties rarely get made to the hit or the hittee unless the hitter starts swinging first in a fight.
The hits to the middle of the chest don't hurt as much as they take away your ability to breathe. You roll around for a while trying to get air back into your lungs.
5:20 - 5:30 Tkachuk's hit on Eichle was both later said after game from both players and both teams, and coaches that it was clean and fair hit. The irony of Tkachuk getting absolutely creamed the same way 7:28 - 7:33 , the next game was just. you can't script that shit. wasn't intentional or anything just very karma crazy to watch.
As a major hockey fan myself, seeing your reactions to these hits is comical! Big hits like this are what everyone hopes to see in a hockey game. But the reason for fighting after the hits could be a lot of reasons. Bad blood between players. The hit was on a star player. The hit was against a rookie player. The hit was dirty. Or the hit was against the goalie. If someone hits the goalie though, that man is considered a dead man and everyone goes to protect the goalie. You don't fuck with the goalie. Also a dirty hit can be one of the following three (that I know of): the person initiating the hit leaps into the hit; illegal, if the hit makes contact to the head; illegal, or if the hit is on a player that has had no contact with the puck; illegal. Oh and targeting a player is also illegal too. The more ya know bud.

@@ShimmySlangin you can do that cleanly. You just take a number and get him back later, fighting over clean hits is regarded.
It wasn't the hitter who got the penalty, it was the dude tryna start a fight after the hit

During the NHL Finals of the Stanley Cup Matthew Tkachuk was playing with a broken sternum
Bennett hit in 2min mark was in the conference finals! Solid clean hit

As a hockey fan, it's so annoying to see clean open ice hits wind up with the other team starting a fight.

My backyard neighbor is the legendary Lanny McDonald.

The disrespect of not including any Detroit hits in this when we have the second coming of Niklas Kronwall on our team is astounding
i was twelve those types hits were layed on me in games
i miss playing hockey
7:31 he had a broken sternum I believe.

Slavin a laugh. Hahahaha!!
The Bennett hit 2 minutes in the dude he hit was knocked out for a second 😂
See the Brian Campbell hit on R.J. Umberger.

That Guy Better Be Alright Because It looks like He Got Hurt!
Oh no he was injured badly
Good ol Tkachuk 👏👏
That first hit was trouba btw😂
When every a player jumps up ‘skates off the ice’ to hit that’s considered a penalty.
First hit was Trouba he hits dirty that’s why they fought
Legality of a hit depends on the time of the season. Whistles go deep in the pockets in the playoffs
Let's gooooo
The 4:15 hit. He didn't get a penalty for the hit. He got a penalty for fighting after the hit.
Looking jacked brother
Adam, I’m 13 and play hockey. We’re allowed to hit now. Imagine these hits but on 13 year olds.
Ever done top 30 calls in hockey history?
I miss Labushkin on Toronto 😂

Don’t worry Gudas got his sh*t rocked later on so we’re good lol
Florida Panthers delivering the punishment!
Matt tkachuk is a hammer who only sees nails
Lemme tell you getting hit in the chest hurts but the big problem is the air getting taken outta you and you can’t breathe
NHL needs to come to PC dammit!
Honestly, when playoffs start, no one knows what the rules are anymore.
I do, whichever team/player(s) the refs are biased against. Never changes. Bettyman's slaves doing his dirty work.
Never forget when Dahlin hit the guy so hard he broke the ice

Think these hits are bad look at some from back in the 90's and early 2000's when hockey was really physical!
