It’s actually because Gump and Co. was written in a way that would be extremely tricky to adapt to film without taking huge risks
It's sad but not unrealistic, so many great guys and girls chasing the love of glorified losers, never ends well and the Jennys of the world always think so high of themselves they believe "I am too much for this guy/girl" but forget they bring nothing to the relationship once the drugs spoil their looks.
With all the stuff that he been through in his life they should have gave him a better woman but yet give him a woman that's ran through then dies at the end of the movie leaving him to raise the boy.
