Dribbling like this was unseen! It was the simplest of dribbling but no other player ever did this continuously and consistently...
By 2009, every team who faced him had to prepare special defensive strategies and 2 or 3 players were made to mark him to restrict his dribbling. He became the most marked player at just 21 years of age! This practice continues to this day almost 15 years later!
He had to adapt his play to include more passing but he still didn't give up on dribbling and went on to become the player with most successful dribbles with more than double the no.of dribbles any other active football player has!

@AGIX Sniper Yeah, CR7 is much more of a show dribbler. I think for most technically strong players dribbling is a way to showcase themselves and I always felt that Maradonna, whilst being super effective, also enjoyed this a bit. Just a bit like Ronaldinho he had this pure love for the ball and the game sometimes approaching it like an artist more than a performer. Messi is different for me. While he has all those skills and love for the game, he will always put the victory first in any second. I think his ego is just not so big. And I love that, just like discussing about it!

I am a Messi fan, but in terms of international achievement, atleast Cristiano has a serious trophy under his name. That is the only thing cristiano will have over Messi. The under 20 world cup and Olympics is not taken seriously due to the restrictions against older players. In football, anything than position 1 is a loss. This is not athletics or other such sports.

Juan Román Riquelme was the heart and soul of this Argentina team. I wished he would have played with Messi at the 2010 World Cup. The last true #10 for Argentina. Messi never takes a minute off. I am particularly impressed with his defensive duties and how much he tracks back to help. Messi covers every blade of grass during a game.
This golden generation, together go through 3 Finals include 1 WC and 2 Copa America. Unfortunately they won nothing... Only Messi, Kun Aguero, Di Maria, only 3 of them in this golden generation continue playing for the AR National team and today they won the Copa America with the winning goal of Di Maria which looks the same at this Olympic Final. Happy for them, after 14 years fighting together, they've archived something that they deserved. Let hope they win the WorldCup next year !

I just wish he could still run this fast... He's at the peak of his game for a while now but unfortunately athletes get slower.
But that's what's cool about the greats. They always adapt themselves to remain at the top.
Michael Jordan wasn't flying as much during the second 3peat, since his body was not allowing him to do so too frequently, but he had found other ways to score (not to mention the other aspects of his game). He was able to score much easier and without wasting much energy.
Same goes with Messi. Nowadays we won't see him running at lightning speed to steal a ball or with the ball at his feet, but he's still at the top because he managed to master the other aspects of the game.
He doesn't track back like he used to or sprint as fast but everything else has gotten better. Including his dribbling. Now his dribbling is more poised and effective and he releases the ball quicker.
