It actually happened 3 times throughout the course of the video and I saw a couple other times on the trip as well. Horses seem to get really excited about steam locomotives.
What an awesome sight. That loco isn't even working hard. I saw a big boy running along the interstate in California and it was passing the cars at a good pace. They are a sight and sound to behold. I would love to go coast to coast in a sleeper car in tow of a big boy.
When I was young, my dream was to become a steam engineer. I am over 64 years old and still think of my childhood dream when I see trains like this. Thank you for the video.!!! Thanks a lot!!!!! Thank you!! In Seoul, Korea.
MAGNIFICENT! This is about as good as it gets in terms of filming the Big Boy 4014 and the 844. The horses, the cold snowy sleet with the awesome backdrop of the Jurassic mountains in the background it is beautiful viewing and no doubt many of us railfans will watch this particular version over and over again. Pity the 844 is not going with the Big Boy on the following excursions because together they are absolutely amazing and have been beautifully captured by so many railfans. Thanks for sharing. Greetings from the Train Lord in South Australia
What a nice combo... Road train and the running horses.. Masterpiece.. Completely.. Hollywood scenario... And the whistle of steam engine and his voice... Like... Chuk chuk chuk (Indian language)
I never tire of seeing such American ingenuity and passion! Happy new year to the BIGBOY crew and UP for making such a dream come true for millions!!!!!!
I've watch the Big Boy restoration and return, this amazing video really makes me wanna to see it in person!! If it ever gets out to northern Indiana!!

The 4014 is already a head turner being alone herself. With 844 tagging along doing a double headend, one just need to stop and really behold them in awe! And then whisper a word “gawjuss girls!”
The double head end is an amazing sight that will not soon be replicated and is somewhat ironic. The whole purpose of building the 1014 class engines was to replace the second helper locomotive. But it's a sight to behold.
I wonder: do horses run along with diesel-drawn trains?? I hope not! There should be a spiritual kinship between the Iron Horse and its fleshy cousins. :-)
Well, I hate to burst your bubble, but... I work for a class 1 railroad. I've seen them run alongside us before. Anything that frightens them, or sometimes they are just in a playful mood, want to run, and along comes a big, loud machine that seems to just light the fuse and, it's off to the races!
Why is the 4014 being trailed by 844? Is the tonnage so high that even the Big Boy alone cannot pull it? Also, having two engines, one of them being Big Boy, is really epic.
The original plan was to have 4014 and 844 pull separate trains to Ogden about a week apart, then meet up for the 150th celebration and pull one train back together. In the end it was all hands on deck for the steam crew to get the Big Boy ready in time and they couldn't spare the crew to run 844 out to Ogden on its own. Either locomotive could easily pull that train by itself, it was done for the spectacle of it rather than a practical need.
@@NorfKhazad thats a nice explanation, but i saw there a 3 diesel engine, why is it there? is it there in case of a mallfunction of the steam engines? Sory for my eanglish.
Hi Phil, I don't have a DVD put together of my Big Boy footage, sorry. A little bit of my footage was used in the Pentrex dvd "Big Boy 4014 Returns to Steam".
HAS ANYONE JUST OPEN UP THE THROTTLE OF A BIG BOY AN SEE WHAT "ITS" REALLY CAN DO FLAT OUT OR SNAP THE THROTTLE OPEN SO THE BIG BOY GOES INTO WHEEL SPIN ? ! 👍😁👋DOC FROM OZ LAND (AUSTRALIA)

The horses running alongside the big boy make this my favorite railroad video on CZcams.

The Iron Horse vs The Horse...
Those horses really liked to race the train. I caught three different groups of them doing it.
@@NorfKhazad they are just trying their best to show that they can still do work
Aaah, man. It doesn't get better than this.
Superb footage, thanks for posting it!

This is fantastic footage of the bog boy and my favorite part is seeing the horses running with the big boy.
The horses!!! So perfect and what are the chances ;-)
For a moment, it looked like a two-headed horse!!
BIG Boy and wild horses....I love that

Echo to Henefer to Croyden to Morgan to Ogden.... man I’ve driven that way soooo many times, but not for a while now.
Wow! The sound you recorded is so perfect, it really feels like being there
Being chased by horses? Running in a snowstorm? Hoo-aah!!! STEAM OVERLOAD!!
Very nice video. Many greetings from Germany.

The railroad equivalent of the raising of the Titanic.
Not that far off. Thankfully the 4014 was in a bit better shape than the Titanic.
You, sir, have some nice videos. Subscribed!
Thanks, hopefully I'll have some more steam footage this year of 1309.

Don’t know about 844. Of course the horses were not too proud to mind being smashed in a race by this beautiful stud!!!!!

Какой охуенный, здоровенный паровоз!!!
Would like to see it going up the horseshoe curve in Pa.
Likewise, then I could film it again without having to travel 2/3 of the way across the country. It will probably never happen though.
