- Take a detailed look at the LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts Express Collectors' Edition in this review video. This massive set is the 3rd largest Harry Potter piece... but the most expensive. It comes with a whopping 20 Minifigures and 5129 pieces. The train is BIG, but cannot be motorized to fit in a LEGO city. No question that it has some drawbacks, but it definitely does what it was intended to do - be a premium adult collectible.

Well but for the Price, it needs to be perfect: Dark Red, Gold instead of yellow accents, a cover for the little nob where you can put the crank (if you don't use the crank), and spare 1x4 bricks to close the stand probably on all sides where the station is not attached. Also, the rails could be flat silver. Well and of course, no sticker is a display set, stickers don't last. They are losing me as an AFOL, with what they give here.
100% agreed and I mentioned the sticker issue on one of his videos or some other Lego CZcamsr video about this set. You're correct,stickers don't last forever as I've find out with some of my 2010 sets with the stickers peeling off. 🥺
It should have been like the Disneyland Train Station.
Bigger than the standard sets but can still work on standard lego track and with power functions.
Color should also have been the dark red.
I feel my problems with this set is it feels like there's too much fluff to it; I know Lego sets a price and budget for a set that a designer has to adhere to and work on, but this set like the Atari 2600 felt too overbudgetted. I don't know how many pieces went into the train and its carriages but the track base takes up 10% of the total part count (it's a similar issue I have with the Star Wars Diorama sets, but it's much more damning here) and the platform seems to take up a lot more than that. The platform looked like there was a significant amount of budget left over, while also looking unfinished because there wasn't any left to make it longer. The 20 figures is underwhelming despite the vast number, as there's several versions of a few characters, plus two unnamed ones.
The train is fantastic, no doubting that, but it's a shame it's tied to a lot of caveats and flaws.
I think they missed the boat. Should have done standard size train with two cab cars and second set for the train station with way more detail. Not seeing a train move on your own track is no fun. Keep up the super fantastic Lego fandom videos!
Totally agree with you. This is the most ill thought out Lego set I have ever seen. I do not know who will buy this and who it was produced for?. Train not right, station not right and very expensive. It makes no sense.

I have most of the Harry Potter Lego and the castle and Diagon were a no brainer. But this!.

that price point I think they definitely missed the mark especially with the platform. they could have very easily made 3 arches and that would have matched up with the train a lot better
If they added 1 more train cart or finished the station arches maybe it would be worth $500
Great review. I think it’s awesome. Just not enough printed tiles. For a display set the visible elements should be printed
I wish lego would make a full train. For example a locomotive, a tender, 2-3 passenger cars, and a caboose

You're very right about this being a niche set. I would love to have it, but I would not have any space to keep it. Even when not put together that would take up tons of space.

It's definitely a great looking set but to be honest I think it would have been even better in the darker Red like the real one.
I’ve read somewhere that the real one is actually red and the movie made it dark red for cinematic purposes

It seems to be they really dropped the ball with this one. I would buy it if they had two passenger cars and the ability to motorize it.
With a few modifications, it could be operated. It fits G Scale track. So the plastic tracks you get with your Christmas train sets.
It would need 8ft minimum curves.
I believe "Has anyone seen a Toad" is the first words of Hermione Granger to Ron and Harry and also the first time we are introduced to her in the wizarding world. So that quote is pretty significant. The "We'll take the lot" quote, Hermione isnt introduced yet. So she wouldnt even be in that lego scene.

I just finished this set yesterday and I absolutely love it. My biggest gripe with this set is probably the platform. It's neither here nor there and doesn't really add much
Very beautiful set, I think the platform has to be at the front, so the size is perfect, with the columns aligned with the space between carriages. The tender will be a bit covered, but you should still be able to see the logo in the middle
Maybe place the platform in front of the coal car that opens up the passenger cabins to be displayed as well and shows the plaque and various scenes of your choice
with the price, you can buy 5 of the older set. my question is, do you think it's possible to use the parts from the 5 older sets to make the new set and make it motorized? are there any special parts from the new set that we can't get elsewhere?
I only saw it in the window of the local Lego store. I totally agree the platform is way too small. And considering the price and what you get for it, I think it is ot worth it. Diagon Alley had so much more to offer with a similar amount of figures but much more to discover and to do for minifigs. Plus, it was (and still is) cheaper

this set gave me the vibe of "let's go big and massive!"... it did come with a big train and massive price tag... i'm ok with the price tag and piece count actually, but i would prefer a smaller train to cater with more cabins and a PROPER 9 3/4 platform... the platform does seems like an afterthought and not cohesive. not sure what are the designers thinking when designing this set - maybe they have an answer to this outcome...
I like it for what it is meant to be...a Harry Potter Collector's piece Sure, it could use some improvements/adjustments but what set doesn't anymore. Certainly cannot make everyone happy. I feel the designer (M.Bessos) did great within the constraints he had and would think if he had his way then we would be looking at a more unaffordable set. And given issues with dark red elements, especially panels/tiles/bricks, this would make the train look dreadful.

I'm not a big Harry Potter fan but even i have been thinking about getting it, over here in the UK it costs £429.99.
If you wanted to motorise the train could you not take apart the supplied track and install the provided rails on the outer studs of the standard track elements and then put a motor inside one of the rear wagons? It would be complicated in curves but for back and forth movement it might work.
I’d have trouble buying this even if it was $300 dollars lol.
I like that the train is wider than other trains, because then there is enough space in the carriage for the minifigures to "move".
Everyone is talking about the price, but here I am spending $900 USD (after tax) to get the UCS AT AT.
My only wish for this Hogwarts Express set is that the platform was larger. I mainly buy lego for the displayability anyways.
The actual main issue I have with this set is the choise of the bright red bricks. they market and design this set as a more adult display piece, yet the color from a adult point of view is completely inaccurate since the real thing is a way darker red. it’s also unnecessary since they do have bricks in that maroon red color.. and yes the platform is a bit disappointing. But imagine this thing made out off the darker red bricks with the same yellow accents.. Would have looked 1000 times better.

The price is fine compared to sports cards. One box of football or basketball cards going for $1500 USD. Everything is relative. The set is huge, comes with a ton of mini figures and is expandable.
Hot Take: there are already too many Harrys, Rons, and Hermiones. I would have preferred to have 20 different characters, such as having Hagrid welcoming students on the far end, Neville, and Ginny as a child (as we knew her for 98% of the series). I get that collectors want to hunt out uncommon versions figures, but did we really need a quarter of the minifigs to be from just the last 6 pages of the book?? I think it would have been cooler to have Marauders-era figs and tie in that history of how long the Express has been running.
Have you noticed the name plate has errors? Set number on it is wrong and “King Cross” it Should be King’s cross.
1:58 - I think the reason has been gone over to death at this point why they couldn't be arsed to put in Ron and Hermione and instead threw in some generics in robes when every other character is in plainsclothes.

I would love to own this set I think it's a fantastically designed, and beautiful train, but at that price I'm going to say that Lego can keep it. The partial station is just a bit too incomplete for my liking, and like you say it could have been three arches (at the least in my opinion), and like someone mentioned in a previous comment it should have had two carriages. Had it came with a second carriage and a three arch station then I'd be able to justify that price tag. Super review 👍

It's a nice looking train if the price was lower I could see some people buying 2 to 3 sets just to make a longer train station plat form and adding more to the train with that said it wouldn't shock me when someone creates rebrickable models of this set.
It would of been cool if they added a cart going halfway through the pillar like in the movie and the replica at the real kings cross station

No motorization and not fitting on standard track was a major deal breaker to me.

If you wanted everything perfect and the platform longer, you might need a bit more money, like a few hundred more.
You would have to be a real fan of the franchise to buy that to display only as a giant dust collector due the price.

Never expected something so bad from what everyone was saying. It’s too large and should have been a standard sized train with an option for a motor similar to the crocodile locomotive because a lot of people love to put motors in these trains. Should’ve also come with 2 coaches, a normal one and a brake coach.
Do you think it is worth to investigate modifying the train to make it fit on regular train tracks? :)

It’s a great display piece but I think it leaves people wanting more out of it.
The fact that it does not have any power functions and can't be motorized or used on a Lego city track and the minifigure selection is wrong plus the station is way too small. It should be at least double what it is now for $500. There is a lot more value in the Diagon Alley or the Hogwarts castle and they are $400 sets with more pieces. This set should be around the $350 range to make it worth what you are getting or NOT getting in this case.

Awful to expensive set not worth 500 bucks....most of the bricks are for the rails (nit even track compatible !)...Not only lego raises the prices but screwing fans....i am done with Lego for a time...
