This is an old traditional Irish song which was made famous by the dub liners I believe. Great classic rock with twin guitar sound, great lyrics, drums and frontman Phil Lynnot. Suggest to check out Emerald which is a bit more heavy.

Very old Irish song 300 years old. Phil and the boys did a top rendition.

Thin Lizzy live in dangerous probably the most underrated greatest album ever.
in later years they became dual lead guitars. the guitarist on "whiskey in the jar" left and then joined brian robertson and scott gorham from america. both lead guitarists.
Dan Armstrong started making clear acrylic guitars in the late 60s. Keith Richards played one. You can also see Joe Perry from Aerosmith playing one on “Draw he Line” at the Texas Jam in ‘78.
Lizzy were a trio at this time with Eric Bell on guitar. He eventually left and Phil brought in two new guitarists, American Scott Gorham and Scot Brian Robertson, that is the classic line-up which became successful.
Mid to late 70's, the acrylic guitars first showed up. Joe Perry used one for a while back then.

I believe its a traditional Irish Folksong. The Dubliners perform the traditional arrangement. I think the Irish Rovers and the Chieftans have probably recorded the song as well.
I am so glad you said it’s your favorite version because even though I love metal and Metallica do an ok job, nothing will ever come close to Thin Lizzy take. Phil amazing raspy voice and the incredible interplay of the vocals with the drums and guitar are so skillful. You can almost miss it

This was not a concert. It was Top Of The Pops UK TV show. It was mimed as on the record there was no bass guitar. Unusually!!
If you decide to take a Thin Lizzy trip then you are very lucky to be hearing them for the firsylt time......other Thin lizzy songs you might like "cowboy song", "Johny the fox meets Jimmy the weed", "thunder and lighting", "don't believe a word", "whiskey in the jar", "the boys are back in town".... There are many more....also, live version are best if you can...
One more comment, check out "black Rose" by Lizzy.... Gary Moore on guitar, amazing.... Lizzy had a few guitarists, all great. But if this is what that person said you sound like then you damn good!
right, one of the first bands to do "whiskey in the jar" was an irish band called "the dubliners" from dublin.

Thin Lizzy needed a song in a hurry, so they came up with a rock arrangment of an old Irish folk song. They were originally rather embarrassed about it, having previously tried to distance themselves from the Irish folk singer cliche. I believe Lynott added a third verse with additional lyrics (all that "some men" stuff). Obviously they added a great guitar solo (pity that was drastically shortened for this radio friendly version). The Dubliners don't really come into this story: lots of people had recorded this folk song, I'm not aware of any evidence that Thin Lizzy knew the Dubliners version in particular. The Metallica version is of course a straight cover of Thin Lizzy's rock arrangment.
It would’ve been almost impossible for Thin Lizzy to be unaware of the Dubliners version. They were the biggest folk group in Ireland at the time during a big revival

Also, the “some men” bit is similar to the last verse of the Dubliners version.

You should it 110% a complement...you mention Metallica playing this song, check out their live Slane castle perform of it, they played it as a tribute that day the Phil Lynott, Thin Lizzy s lead singer.... The Irish crowd really appreciate it and its a great atmosphere
Its an old rebel song ,they didn't perform it live during the troubles even though it was one of their biggest hits.
Old Irish folk song. Various versions called Gilgarry Mountain, Darlin' Sporting Jenny, Kilkenny Mountain, etc, variations in lyrics. First version I heard was a folk version of Gilgarry Mountain by Bob Gibson. Thin Lizzy version is great.

Ned from Spain here. Thin Lizzy are awesome and thanks for checking them out. This is the original line up with Eric Bell on guitar and mirror vest. BTW As a Country artist I really don't think you should cast aspersions on flashy stage clothes from the 70's. I mean Conway Twitty and Ronnie Milsap for example.. Comparisons to Eric Bell and or Gary Moore are an enormous compliment. Noneother than Jimmy Paige considered Gary Mooore one of the best ever. Best version of Whiskey in a Jar is the 2 of them together in a tribute to Phil Lynott. One Night in Dublin. Check it out on CZcams.

This is a disastrous edit of the song and the performance is not live, you really need to find the original without video to appreciate Eric Bell. He left the band not too long after so any thing later will probably have the great Scott Gorham and most likely Brian Robertson, the duelling guitars that made 'Thin Lizzy' such a great live band, and yes, I did see them live!

I think the “effect” you’re hearing on the vocals is compression artifacts on this unfortunate video. Listen to a CD or at least an audio stream of the source material.
Metallica’s version is a cover of Thin Lizzy’s recording.
