Edit now I'm at the end of the video, the big globe looking building behind the Tyne Bridge is called The Sage and is a venue used for more orchestral shows (the acoustics are amazing). He also missed showing the Centre for Life which is a more interactive science type museum and is amazing

Newcastle upon Tyne is the most underrated city in England and us Geordies are known around the world as "the friendliest English people" there is actually Geordie bars around the world in holiday destinations 👍
Newcastle is the last port of defense while the Romans invaded Briton, the Irish, Scottish, Welsh and Britons gathered to fight against the Romans, we have a lot of history even the younger Geordie generation know nothing about unfortunately

I was disappointed he did not mention The Hoppings, held every June, the Town Moor hosts the largest funfair in Europe, for over a 120 years small travelling fairs congregate in Newcastle for two weeks of noise, lights and fun. I was born in Newcastle upon Tyne was christened in the cathedral ,and lived there till we immigrated to Australia when I was 6 years old I revisited whith my wife in 2004 after 50 years away . When we moved to Australia it was my mum who wanted me to grow up not living near and playing on bombsites ,and living day to day on rations.it was a terrific suprise to see the the place rebuilt and cleaned of centuries of coal soot all over the buildings, things I clearly remembered even though I was such a small child . The streets were familiar because we had lived practically in the city centre, and I have many fond memories of being taken to the weekend markets on the quayside where if I was a good boy I'd get a treat of fairy Floss as we Aussies call candy floss and you Americans call cotton candy , which looking back was remarkable as suger was heavily rationed at the time , it's remarkable what you remember ,. We moved here and settled in (wait for it) Newcastle NSW, I know no imagination right? The only thing the two Newcastle's have in common is coal, some place names and me of course my Newcastle hasn't a building older than 230 yrs or the history that goes back beyond the Roman invasion , but we do have subtropical rainforests and miles of clean pristine beaches, so I invite all Geordies to come visit your Australian sister city .

As a born and bred Geordie who now lives in Western Australia 🇦🇺, the minute you open your mouth and you speak the accent tells you where you are from. Its a northern city built on coal, heavy engineering and ship building, the people are hard working and probably the friendliest city in the UK and a hell of a night out. Once a Geordie always a Geordie. The Cathedral on the Hill, a place of worship..,

Joseph Swan was a chemist and physicist from Pallion in Sunderland his home Pallion Hall was where the Pallion Metro stop is now. He was apprenticed to a local pharmaceutical firm for six years. He moved to Mawson’s in Grey Street in Newcastle where he eventually became a partner. He lived in Underhill, Low Fell, Gateshead, this is where he did most of his experiments. As well as the incandescent light bulb he also developed photographic plates and his bromide paper is still used for monochrome photos to this day. The people of Sunderland wanted the Northern Spire bridge named after him but that was not to be.

I’m finding it very strange and welcoming at same time, that there is a reaction about our home city. Usually videos like this are about London or the historic cities of Europe and elsewhere, Newcastle rarely gets a look-in. Newcastle is a very special place, it’s people are passionate and friendly, the city is normally bustling and is a great place to socialise with many bars and diverse places to eat. Ben briefly touched upon China town, a street loaded with Chinese restaurant’s, and if you find that you have urge for a tattoo, then China town can sort that for you too. My favourite place to eat was a Mongolian restaurant, the Kubla Kahn (not sure if it is still there). I’m retired now, but having worked in Newcastle, my daily trip entailed walking along quayside to work, with a view from my desk of the river Tyne which was no more than 50ft away, and the Tyne bridge, which was just a few hundred yards away.
I am sure that my sister in-law who is French, only comes to visit us from Paris so that she can shop till she drops in Newcastle, and does it frequently.
And finally, England is not just London. You’ve previously mention that you are planning a trip to the UK at some point, then I can very definitely recommend a few days in Newcastle, you won’t be disappointed.
Take care and Gan canny marras.
P.s. Did I mention that Newcastle, AKA “The Toon”, has a fantastic nightlife.

As a schoolgirl I watched Martin Luther King arrive to receive his honorary doctorate at Newcastle University, the speech tannoyed outside where we stood; it had elements of the “I have a dream” speech he used a few months later. My favourites are the lecture theatre at what is now The Common Room in Neville Hall, and The Lit & Phil Library which was the first public room lit by electric light during a lecture by Swan on October 20 1880. Mosley Street, the first in the world to be lit by electric light, had a grand opening, attended by many dignitaries and one Thomas Edison

The disco ball building is a world renowned music venture called the Sage. It has two auditoriums one large and a much smaller venue .It is also a music school .At night it lights up like an ocean liner .Check out some pictures on Google as it is beautiful especially with the millennium Bridge as well .
It is actually in Gateshead and right next door to it a new music arena being built .The Baltic art venue is next door so that is why the area is now promoted as Newcastle Gateshead .
40 years ago I worked opposite St Nicholas Cathedral and on a hectic day I would pop in an just sit and enjoy the peace .There is also a Catholic Cathedral which is also beautiful .
For all its faults I love the city .I love the cafe culture and the new blending in with the old .Everything in the city is easily accessible as it is so compact .The coast is only 10 mile away , the start of Hadrians Wall 6 miles away .Beamish is 10 miles away .Every year the Town Moor -a large open space in the city hosts Europe's largest fun fair .Durham City is only 20 miles away. There are two Universities and Newcsstle University the one he highlighted has an art gallery and architecture to die for .It also made Dr Martin Luther King an honorary degree , the only British University to do so and there is a statue of him outside .
The city has come a long way in the last 40 years and for all its problems and faults it is a lovely city .

I see pensioners resting as they go about the city. People waiting to meet friends and family. Hippies, goths and all sorts of youths. Yes, there are sometimes alcoholic/drug addict types but even they mostly leave everyone else to use the space safely. Even if they can at times be noisy, arguing with each other about who stole whose last cigarette and where did the last bottle of cider go.

As an attraction to tourists you need to research it to get the best out of your time for the interests you have, as its not really marketed to tourists in the way other cities are, its always been a working city ands some features are not obvious to find just wandering around. I’m Londoner born & bred and was fortunate to visit Newcastle and be shown around by friends who lived there. The architecture is out of this world. The pride of their city shines through the friendly and welcoming people. Wallsend is a town in North Tyneside, Tyne and Wear, England, at the eastern end of Hadrian's Wall (I didn’t know Hadrians wall was this far down). Hadrian’s Wall was a rich and vibrant place. It was a border, but it was also a place where borders were crossed. Here, soldiers and civilians from across Europe and North Africa met, traded and served together at the north-western frontier of the Roman Empire. Many settled in this wild, foreign place across the sea and adopted local customs, worshipping native gods even while preserving their own traditions.(cited…search English Heritage site. Hadrians wall).

I'm a Geordie and I did know that stuff already - I've even done the tour of the tunnels before which was pretty cool. I don't know if he necessarily waited until it was dark to do the tour so much as it gets dark early here in winter. I'd def recommend walking along the Quayside in the dark for a good view. If you head east along to a block of flats then you'll see an iconic view right up the river with the bridges all aligned.
He didn't show the multiple parks in the video but they're worth a wander if you like nature. Exhibition Park is (in my opinion) the least interesting of the 2 in the city centre, but Leazes Park is lovely and back on to the Town Moor - where you'll often find cows grazing.
If you want to get a bit more out of the city centre into Jesmond/Heaton you'll find Jesmond Dene which is a gorgeous gorge (for lack of a better word) and walk along one of the smaller rivers that join the Tyne. It really feels like you're miles away from the city in a rural place with it being so enclosed/quiet.
If you jump on a metro you can get yourself to the coast as well. I'd highly recommend a walk between Tynemouth and Whitley Bay with the lovely views (and places to stop for fish and chips). Make sure you continue to the Links (the large grass area) and see Spanish City which is a gorgeous building. Walk an extra few miles (on the flat) and you'll get to St Mary's Lighthouse which is an iconic place on the coast and subject of many a photo. At the right time of year it's a great place to spot the Aurora if the weather is good and the display is strong (I've got several photos of it myself).

Greys Monument was named for the Prime Minister who passed the Great Reform Act of 1832 (?) and for whom Earl Grey tea is named after. You used to be able to go inside the monument and climb the stairs to the top, but I haven't been back for 20 years so I don't know if this is still the case.
Back in the 90s there was a ferry on the river which had been converted into a night club and had a revolving dance floor. I was dating a Newcastle University student at the time so had a few decent nights out with her there. (I've always regarded her as the biggest mistake of my life, as in me being a muppet and leaving her. Oops.) The nightlife is great, although the sight of barely dressed local lasses in the middle of winter might take some getting used to.
The term "Geordie" has three possible origins, all relating to the name George. 1. Local miners kept using George Stephenson's lamp even when the Davy lamp was invented. 2. People from the north east remained loyal to King George II during the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion so were known as "George's Men". 3. The local accent was so unintelligible to outsiders that like George III they were assumed to be mad. There is some dispute as to who qualifies as a Geordie. The widest definition is anyone born south of the River Tweed (the Scottish border) and north of the River Tees (the Yorkshire border). Today it seems to apply just to people from the Newcastle area. A friend from Sunderland told me that growing up in the 60s they had no problem being called Geordies. Call them that now and you're liable to be punched.
The rivalry between Newcastle and nearby Sunderland is thought to go back to the 1904-5 Russo Japanese War. The Russian fleet was built in Newcastle whereas the Japanese fleet was built in Sunderland. We had an official alliance with Japan from 1902-22 and the the Japanese managed to sink two Russian fleets.

Having lived near Newcastle most of my life I have visited nearly all of the places mentioned including Victoria Tunnel ( Which is excellent) many people don't realise the impact the area's inverters, scientists and engineers had on the world. I believe that the reason Mosley street was the first to be illuminated by electric light is because Joseph Swan's office is just along the road towards Swan House round about at the end of the Tyne Bridge it has a Blue Plaque outside the door. Also right behind the Central station is the office of George and Robert Stephenson which is open to the public on I think selected days. Turbinia is a significant vessel designed by Charles Parsons to test his steam turbines. His research completely changed marine propulsion for ever and electrical generation which we are still using to this day.

I wish he'd taken a trip from monument to haymarket on the Metro, we are one of the few cities outside London with an underground (subway). Anyways, love you two - keep up the amazing work you do, very much appreciated ❤❤. (Of course I subscribed to Ben's channel).

The steal from the Sydney harbour bridge came from Redcar Middlesbrough Newcastle way. And the design for the Sydney harbour bridge was inspired by the bridge crossing the river in Newcastle if you looked you can see the similarity. 🇦🇺🇬🇧🇺🇸

My maternal grandmothers brother went out to Oz to help erect the Sydney Harbour bridge. He worked for the Dorman Long company at Redcar who designed and built them, as did my grandfather.

As the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, the UK has a large number of towns and cities that contributed enormously to the development of the modern age.

but Newcastle invented the steam train , electric lights & even built the collier bought by Captain Cook & renamed the Endevour so contributed to the founding of Australia (& Hawaaii & the reason the Union Flag is still part of the Hawaiin Flag!)

@paulwild3676 oh, tell it like it is ! The Newcastle City Guides will tell you, London of the Industrial Revolution era was built on the money from our coal . That is no surprise to us, so many of the families of wealthy mine owners here moved to London (hence the wealth following them) the ones most British folk would find most notable were the Bowes family , the Queen Mother's family , the Bowes Museum in Co Durham is built in the classic French design of the era & was donated to become a museum , anyone can Google it and marvel at its beauty, no doubt if they could have moved it to the southern shires it would be gone too . Gibside Hall , in Gateshead also belonged to the QMs family .
