Many campers recognise that their sleep in a tent or bivvy (on the ground) is not generally too comfortable or pleasant; this is in stark contrast to a well set-up hammock (11 or 12 foot length for a comfy diagonal flat lay), which when combined with a decent down underquilt and tarp gives BY FAR the most comfortable and restful sleep of the three options.😊
A hammock with a big enough tarp makes for a fantastic place to stay during a storm. I'd much rather be in a hammock than a 1-person tent in that case. I actually don't even own a tent anymore, just a hammock and a few bivvy bags ;)
I'm a tent person but I also got a nice hammock. I started bike touring back in 1980 and we had heavy tents but we always spread the load. I still have my Cannondale F&R panniers along with a set of Tailwinds but I switched to a B.O.B. trailer for hauling a camp. No weight on the bike is much better. Just pedal hard and earn your dinner.
Air B&Bs are my favourite 😅 10h cycling, shower, eating in a pub and connecting with locals. But I do need to look for something because sometimes i don't find a place 🤦
Just got back from a trip here in US southeast during a hot spell with feels like temps above 100°F and never falling below 85° at night I carried a tent for ten days but never used it. It would not have been possible to sleep in it - even with just the fly and footprint configuration which the bugs would've rendered miserable and unworkable. There is no way a bivy would have worked unless swampy sweating all night is desired. A hammock might have been possible - again -were it not for the bugs. The treeless NC outer banks destination would have been challenging to find a suitable pair of mounts! So I judged for the trip. For me with daily mileage constraints and conditions the only real option was hotels! Were it fall/winter with chances of rain, not a race a tent or tarp/bivy would have been my option. A bivy is nice for quick trips where the weather is more certain. I love my Warbonnets but carry them on backpacking trips only. Not sure why I'm okay carrying it on my back but somehow it seems too much for the bike!

If the route have trees, its hammock every time. The comfort is so much better then sleeping on the ground.

As seniors, tent all the way for wifey and I, and since I am less flexible, we now use 3 man tent.
