- This is a short tutorial on how to use the Build Planner to make your life easier in Space Engineers, one of the biggest quality of life updates it's surprisingly easy to miss bits (at least it was for me) :P
A big thank you to my patrons who error checked the video and gave me some great suggestions on how to improve it before publishing the video. If you want to help out with making these tutorials better: / splitsie
New tutorials will be posted as soon as I feel they are complete but hopefully will be able to get them out about once per week.
If you have any tutorial topics you'd like me to cover in the coming videos please let me know in the comments. If you've got burning questions about how to do something, ask here and I'll do my best to answer.

Don't Build Planner and Drive.
Yep, that's the main lesson of the video :D
You cannot really do hands free build planner.
Try installing an antenna and remote on your base. This will allow you to fill your build planner and send it directly to the assembler without leaving your worksite. 👍🏻
Wait... seriously? I've been multi tripping it because I forgot one motor and oh now I also forgot the grids....Don't Space Engineers without a Splitsie.
lol I can't claim too much, after all this tutorial took so long to come out because it took me that long to be given enough tips on how to use the build planner to feel confident about it :P
Best part of video at the end, crashing into the side of a mountain and she says “fuel low” 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Always helpful with the warnings just in time :P
Thanks for the tutorial. The explanation of why it fails sometimes was very useful.
I tried to find a few situations where it goes wrong, so I'm glad those bits were helpful :)
I have been struggling with it inconsistently working..... Thank you very much!
One thing that could be clarified is that by middle clicking on a conveyor port with a block in hand will add any components needed for said block before adding any missing components into your build planner queue (as shown in the video). Apart from that, thanks for showing me that I can add components for a block to the assembly queue without opening the inventory. I can't believe I never read the tooltip that indicated the shortcut for that.
Yeah that's a good point, I realised too late that I skipped over that bit
I've put off learning the build planner because I'm suspicious of change. But when I decided it would make my in-game life that much easier, I decided to come here. Another epic Splitsie tutorial...no detail left untold. Thanks for putting so much work into this video.
You do this WAY better and far more thorough than i did. Well done sir.
Thank you :)
On thing you missed. When withdrawing from an access port, if you middle mouse click twice it will pull from inventories other than the one you are currently pointed at.
If you mentioned this and I missed it, I apologize.
That's a good point, I don't believe I mentioned it :)
Thank you. This is what I wanted to know. Mostly I access stuff from connectors in hangars and they do not contain the items I need but are obviously in cargo pods.
i know it's an older video but it checks out ;)
thanks Splitsie... for some reason despite me doing all this in space engineers i completely forgot or something was wrong and i couldn't middle mouse etc to draw out components or transfer into a cargo.... and for the life of me my memory just wouldn't allow for any reason why... so first chance i got.... i instantly thought "hang on, Splitsie did a tutorial on pretty much everything SE" so here i am, so again Thank you Splitsie, you are a life saver, again! :)
Well, I've been using the build planner all wrong. Very helpful video!
Thanks, glad it was helpful :)
Finally...now I know how to use the build planner...love the tutorials. Always learn new things from your channel.
Keep up the good work
Thanks Heinrich, glad they've been useful :)
One tip is mmb on an inventory doesn't seem to work if items are stored in an inventory on a separate connected grid. You have to access the inventory and use the transfer button instead. Also, when there is more than one assembler on a grid, there does not seem to be a way to choose which assembler's build queue to use. Maybe turning off all but one assembler would do it, but I haven't tested this.
Great tutorial Splitse!
Interesting, I hadn't noticed that limitation with collecting from the inventory but there are so many permutations of things with the build planner it's really difficult to test it all :/
Good point about the assembler too, I guess it encourages the use of cooperative mode for the assemblers so you just need the one that gets the queued items
You've just improved my build time by a huge factor, thanks man.
This is excellent tutorial for build planner! It was massive quality of life improvement indeed, but even for experienced engineers not very intuitive. Learned few neat tricks. Thank you, sir!
You're very welcome, it took me a while to learn myself, which is why this tutorial is only coming out so long after the feature was added :P
Thanks for this tutorial. I did not realize how usefull this feature is.
You're very welcome, to Keen's credit their implementation is pretty dang good :)
@@Splitsie Yeah, I like it.
The part at 6:00 makes me glad that all our bases had sorters set to drain out the assembler components when they are done. Then you can just shift middle mouse on the cargo and middle mouse a few seconds later xD
It's always good to have some degree of organisation like that, too easy for things to get messy and for stuff to stop working
yay the tutorial series is back!
Yep, hoping to keep the tutorials and tests coming for a while :)
Doing some smaller and shorter topics should make it easier to keep them up even after I start my new single player series that I'm planning
Looking forward to it.
As always, a top notch tutorial.
Show this to Capn' Shack... he DESPERATELY needs it.
lol If I could get Shack to reliably remember to use things like this that would be a true achievement :D
3:00 is probably how I spend a good 50% of my time in SE
lol yep, it's even worse when you stream SE, more distractions means more trips to get what you keep forgetting :P
Dude! I've been playing with this for a while and I'm just amazed at the fact that I never read the tooltips in the inv screen! I could've been using this thing a lot better if I had. Thanks for the pointers!
You're very welcome :)
Thanks, the build-planner was a bit of a mystery to me until now.
Hopefully this'll let you get some good use out of it :)
holy shorts... you made it WAY more understandable... I guess I don't need Easy Inventory anymore... Thanks again Splitsie, keep up the fantastic work and I look forward to your future tutorials!
Thanks, glad it made things clearer :)
You can plan for an entire ship using build planner. When building a large ship i'll slap down a projector and que up all the materials to make it using build planner by gown down the projectors missing block list. It's so nice to know i have exactly what i need to build a ship before i lay down the first block.
It's even more useful when you first start because materials are scarce in the beginning so being able to que up exactly what you want and nothing more or less saves on ingots and energy.
Build planner, like airtightness, was one of those features i didn't know the game needed until it was there and now i wonder how i ever managed before without it.
Right click with welder was exactly what I needed, also works with Projected blocks. Thanks!
Oh cool, hadn't tested that before
10:28 The very reason I don't use the BP queuing system. It is to easy to forget that you have items in the queue and will produce the components for those in the queue when you are trying to order up something entirely different. Besides. using the welder to get the components is by far the quickest way.
Agreed, and the welder method fits in so nicely with the most common build style that people who've played for a while would be used to
Nice one! I only just looked your channel up yesterday thinking it's been a while. Didn't know about the middlemouse thing!
I'm glad, was a bit worried this was going to be so late it wouldn't be that useful :P
Thanks for all the tutorials I would’ve given up on Space engineers long ago if it wasn’t for your help
You're very welcome, glad I've been able to keep you interested :)
A very helpfull tutorial. Thanks for putting it together for us. As much as many people stillt stick to easy inventory, the buiildplaner is atleast as good as the mod and really makes an engineer's life much easier.
Thanks Dirk :)
Since I struggle again and again with the buildplanner, this is heaven sent.
Plus: now I know what sputtered in my game.
Glad I could help :)
Been a long time since a tutorial video(very helpful five stars)
I did do a little one on how to build the folding ramp from Escape Unlikely last week, but I know what you mean. They should be back more regularly now as I've got a new approach which fits in better around the other things I do :)
There’s one thing you kind of missed splits, if you have a block in hand and middle mouse a container that has the components needed available it will automatically withdraw everything and remove the block from the build planner allowing you to keep middle mousing with other blocks and adding the components until you run out of room In your inventory. This is particularly helpful with things like planning structures as you can grab the large grid light armour block and quickly fill your inventory with steel plate by rapidly clicking.
That's true, I got distracted from talking about that while I talked about why it doesn't work like Easy Inventory except for when you have the items available :(
Splitsie I figured it was just a oversight in the edit as I’m pretty sure I picked that trick up from watching you do it in the unlikely series lol.
Glad you made this vid though as I see so many veteran players dismiss build planner because they cut their teeth on easy inventory. For newer players like me though all I’ve ever felt the need for was the build planner.
As an experienced player who almost never used Easy Inventory I agree, the build planner really does the job well enough not to need EI :)
thx 4 the explanation... trying out the game in the middle of the night and being tired wasnt the best idea. this video helped afterwards ;-)
Glad I could help!
One of the best new features Space Engineer got. :)
Absolutely, Keen did a good job on it :)
Another enjoyable and easy to understand tutorial! Well done Splitsie!!!
Thank you :)
man, you explain so nice and good! thanks for the videos!
Thanks :)
This stuff should be explained through in-game tutorial, devs are lazy and continue to rely on such awesome youtubers! That you for sharing this lifehack
They've tried with their tutorials, but they just don't quite hit the mark. Hopefully one day they'll take me up on my offer to consult with them on development of tutorials :)
Excellent tutorial Splitsie, learned a few tricks I did not already know!
Thanks, glad it was handy :)
Good choice splitsie. Im still using easy inventory my self - must make the transition.
A good thing to note would be a convenient selection of blocks that gives you all the starting components for all blocks.. eg steel plate, interior plate, construction components, girders. These are the components I tend to load my inventory down with when laying down blocks for a design - and then using BOB or a welding ship to finish the job.
Honestly after watching the video I think im still going to stick with easy inventory while its available - it just seems less clunky to me.
Thanks Bigol, yeah I suspect it may become more necessary in the future if Easy inventory doesn't continue to be supported by the modders :/
Oh one thing I think that might be worth adding is that when you have a lot of components scattered throughout a complex conveyor system things can get weird. You sometimes have to issue multiple middle clicks to draw components from say the connector you're directly tapping and then again to pull more from another container further down the chain that has the rest. I also had an experience the other day while producing a large number of components where it would refuse to pull components that I know were available in a storage container. It has something to do with the way SE issues pull requests from conveyor systems.
I've been running into issues like this on a survival server as I scale up my base that has 20 refineries and I don't have a good sorting system so during production with distributed assemblers things can get spread out. I gotta work on that. Exactly how push requests work confuses me a little too as I had an incident last week with my large scale ice mining running out of storage and then gleefully filling up every connector and cargo container on the entire base with ice. I learned how to use sorters real quick after that!
Jake Heuft Look into Issy’s Inventory Managment script on the Workshop. I cannot play without it now. It manages all inventory, can manage refineries, assemblers, and much more.
I've experienced similar problems, it seems to not perfectly deal with connected and complex inventories, but as I wasn't able to properly replicate that to find the root cause I wasn't confident to put it in the video, it's worth noting though (which is why I like having these comments so people who want to know more can read them) :)
Thank you again, trying to get back into the game after the survival update and trying to figure out what the heck all the controls were for this (when it turns out they're all listed under "help" and not "controls"...) was turning into a nightmare. Cheers, amazing and to-the-point tutorial as always :D
Glad to help, this was a topic I'd wanted to cover for ages but it took me longer than expected to get comfortable enough with it that I think I did this almost 4 months after the patch that added it :P
@@Splitsie It's got some wonky quirks and somehow manages to be less flexible than EasyInventory despite being an obvious rip :P
Still, a really nice feature to have in vanilla. Now I just need to drum up the patience to deal with the several hours it takes to get past all the hand-drilling and shuttling stone....
Thank you for the tutorial. This is what I needed. :)
You're welcome :)
Capac as an indicator?! Lol 😂😂😂 you made my day, mate. Love it.
Thanks, I thought it would be a fun and very effective way to highlight things :)
Thank you for making these awesome tutorials!
You're very welcome :)
I remeber useing phone to take pictures when i first got the game, imagine building small cargo without one...then basicly i found your chanel and tutorial videos and here I am 500 hours latter bulding space rockets replicas, thx dude !
Thanks, glad I could help you get through those early days :)
It turns out I had no idea how to use Build Planner. Thanks Splitsie.
Glad to help :)
Yod dont know how much u helped me learning the game i would be so lost without u
Thanks, very happy to have helped :)
Thanks for the tips Splirsie.😁
You're very welcome :)
This is changed my life. No joke. 3000 hours ingame and I only just learned this
Glad I could help you save some time :)
Very helpful. Thank you for making this.
You're very welcome :)
Gotta love the Capac-pointer 9:29.
He does grab attention rather effectively :)
So true Splitsie, i don't know anyone who hasn't had to deal with forgetting what they needed within a 6 second interval. lol
It's sad how true that is :P
Especially when there's an orange suited distraction hanging around
@@Splitsie lol
This is so incredibly useful, thank you!!
You're very welcome :)
178 hrs on record. This is the 1st I hear of build planner. Oooofeeeeeesh
That's not too bad, they added it to the game after I had over 2000 hours :P
Phenomenal tutorial once again
Thank you :)
I do use the build planner with right click a lot, but the retrieve item for block in hand I need to remember that one.
Also 13:13: Mind the ga.... cliff
Typed space engineers welding ship build planner. Looks for tutorial. Sees a Splitsie vid. "oh thank god..."
lol I hope it helped :)
Also note, depending on how you have your conveyors set up, it might take a few clicks to withdraw everything. So if there is an inventory that is smaller than your plan between you and the items your withdrawal will be limited by it's size. Especially likely if you have personal inventory set to 10x but haven't changed other inventory multipliers.
That's a good point, and it doesn't work well across split grids (dragging stuff out of a connected ship for example)
Keen should give you commission. I want that wood texture because of this vid.
lol apologies for the teaser, I just love doing weird things with my builds in these tutorials :P
Thank you! I haven’t been able to fully figure this out yet.
Hope it helped :)
Two Thumbs Up; If I could! Love the Capac Clippy (Clappy? Clipac? Clappic? Cappy?) C:\Users\***\Favorites\Space Engineers\Splitsie\Build Planner - Space Engineers Tutorial (DONE). I knew there was much more to the planner then I knew how to do... Thank you for taking the time to explain how and why the planner works the way it does. It will take some time for the SE veteran in me to pick up on these new fangled key strokes but that part about trying to remember what the heck and how many of what I wanted hits home so often. 13:01 10 points for Tree Kill. I would have given you 100 Bonus points if you had nailed the second one. LOL at the end 13:13 Low Fuel (Ya Think?) I just updated my portable to the newest build and have started a new (SS ET) Solar System Earth Type world so if you care to make a tutorial on how to import mods to work offline that would be awesome... The new Online/Offline save file directories are a pain.
Maybe Clipac? :P
Hopefully at least the right click with the welder aspect of it will fit nicely in without having to change much about your approach, that's the aspect of it I use the most and somehow even manage to use when playing multiplayer :)
Thanks for the tutorial. I was having trouble with using this thing, but this video helps!
Glad to help :)
yaaaay another splitsie tutorial
Hope it was helpful :)
@@Splitsie i've actually been trying to figure out how to do that stuff lol
been playing some 2 and a half years and no clue XD
bravo :) this cleared up something i needed to test, CTRL+MMB to withdraw 10x of a block's components, nice :)
Glad it was helpful Marc :)
I liked the crash at the end of the video.
Thanks, I do like to have fun with the endings when inspiration strikes me :)
Finally, a tutorial Wasted and the bunch can learn from
We can only hope :P
do a video on contracts!
What a fun video!!!
That outro was gold
Lol thanks 🙂
I should give this a try. But I'm so used to eazy inventory.
It's worth learning as there are some elements of it which work more nicely, even if the block in hand behaviour is very different :/
Personally, I prefer Easy Inclventory for most stuff, it I still use the Build Planner for a few things.
Great tutorial Splitsie, even like the ending :)
Thanks Jim :)
Where can we find a list of these hotkeys? I have looked everywhere for these! Alright, F1, advanced controls, thanks so much! Starting out in this game has been grueling so far, the learning curve is steep. Thanks for the help!
I've bought the game and started playing after seeing most of the videos on your channel, but the shortcuts were never explicit, I really love the game thanks to you!
Glad I put that bit in about F1 then, happy it helped :)
Thank you for this tutorial, very useful!
My favorite feature with the build planner is using it to load up ship welders.
One point you forgot to mention is when loading up a ship using the build planner, you have to exit the cockpit to add to build planner, then reenter cockpit to transfer each time.
If there is a way to add to build planner from a cockpit, that would be really great, but I haven't found one. It is frustrating to keep going in and out of the cockpit to add stuff to the build planner.
One more thing: the build planner has a max capacity of 8 items...this SUCKS!
I guess they really didn't want to put a scroll bar in the G menu screen :/
Really a component construction planner, build planner brings a completely different vision to mind, and I still need a build planner better then colored pencils and a grid paper.
But yes the SE build planner is very useful, none of the manually calculating how components of each kind you need as you build your project, but you are limited to eight active items at once, unless you know what you are building and queue them up in the assembler by clicking on the items you need and then the assembler builds the components in order, then you pull the components out with build planner, then it helps to build in the same order as you queued up the items. If you are not having that problem then you have been hoarding far too many components in your dozen cargo pods, and you probably haven’t been playing the game, rather just mining and making components instead of building cool things, I know as I have been down that rabbit hole too many times, why do I need 50 Mkg of iron, I should have been to all the planets by now.
Another method of making things run smoother is to use something like Isy's Inventory Manager script to auto-craft a set number of components so you've always got a reasonable stockpile :)
The Build Planner is a great tool, but it's very annoying that it changes the size of the block you held in hand to large when going to a large port to click MMB. However, it's by far better than getting all the stuff by hand. Again a great video, thank you.
It's something that I think is unlikely to be changed as it would also cause frustration if the grid size didn't change when you're trying to place blocks (at least for people used to the current behaviour)
@@Splitsie That's right. Maybe they bring back the 'change block size' binding. Would be a good compromise for me.
That's a good point, I completely forgot that we used to have a separate binding for that :P
Hahaha the ending was funny! *crashes* "Fuel... low"
It was quite the good timing :P
Awesome video as usual. Is there a updated survival maybe world added to the workshop yet as i would love to explore the base myself.
No there isn't, I've been totally slack and I forgot to post it. Keep reminding me if you don't see it up this week :)
@@Splitsie ok thankyou that will be awsome to see it cant wait
Thx for the video it helped clear up a lot of things now I can finally use the build planner rather than the modded one :)
You're very welcome :)
Another super helpful video for a noob like me.
Thanks glad it was useful :)
Splitsie, Scourge of Trees!
I cannot rest while there are still some standing!
I didn't touched the Buildplanner but now I'll try
It's worth it as it does add a fair bit of convenience :)
thank you for explaining the build Planner,I always have problems with it.
You're very welcome :)
It works Ok, it really needs a dump queue short cut though
Completely agree, that would be very handy
I've been watching your Wrong way up series and I kept seeing you go up to a thing and pulling multiples for a block in hand but nothing in the planner and it was driving me nuts trying to figure out how you do that. Is that part of the MMB + block in hand shortcut?
Ah, explains a few things. Also, totally cool rover.
Thank you, I built it for something that I didn't end up doing so figured I'd take advantage of it for any tutorials that need a wheeled vehicle stand in :)
Very very useful
Can't wait for that plenty more to be survival maybe S2 :D
You shouldn't have to wait too much longer :)
I feel like a damn genius. I actually figured all this out on my own. Watched this video to see if I missed something about it. Surprisingly I didn't.
More tutorials yay even for and old player they are usefull
Thanks :)
I love how you give tutorials, I was curious if you could create a tutorial on how to create a functional store block?, as in others are able to buy the items/components from the store block you have created/added. I am at the end of my rope here. 897hrs and I am struggling with how to set the bugger up. BTW, I am going to request from others as well. Dan2D3D responded to my steam forum post, but not seeing the video mentioning store blocks, only contract blocks. I am able to create a working contract block. Just not a working Store block.Thank you for any help
I'm hoping to find some time soon to take a closer look at the blocks from the economy update, I started with the safe zone block, but it's incredibly buggy so I'm hoping for something more consistent in its behaviour which may come with the next update that's due out soon :)
@@Splitsie Thank you for your response. I am looking forward to it as well. I am able to make a functional Vending machine if you need help with that. Same name no spaces on steam. I believe I can create step by step instructions on how to create a vending machine. If you need it.
If anyone sees this... can I shift+mmb to add the build planar to the production queue? Or do I have to click the button in the inventory screen that says "add planar to production queue"? Thanks in advance if anyone replies.
i really hope that KSH will make it so medkits and powerkits stay in personal inventory after alt+MMB, you would think that that would be a givin.
Agreed, maybe it was an oversight. I would imagine there's just a list of exclusions somewhere that items could be added to
I never knew, it can be used with the inventories of connected grids. Thanks.
You're welcome, it's funny, when I make these tutorials I often learn more about the topic than I ever knew beforehand (hadn't ever thought of doing that until I was doing some tests for this) :)
Wood grain, all the wood grain. Seriously Nice tutorial. :D
So much beautiful, beautiful fake wood ;)
not even 3mins in and I learned something sweet
My work here is done :)
Perfect ending 👌
Always like to have a bit of something weird/destructive at the end of these videos :)
The problem with production from buildplanner is that is u have more assamblers the production assambler change.
A VOICE VID NOICE MY DUDE
thx à lot for this tutorial :)
You're very welcome :)
