  • Moen Cartridge Puller. I use easily accessible steel pipe to make a full length puller. Not very difficult to make; Not very many tools needed.

    Thank you!!! I have a dozen of family owned rentals to manage and fix whatever fails. Really like this video to put together a tool that actually works to make things easier in my life. Plumbing as I am learning has so many quirks and how to's. I am a retired industrial electrician.

    Good job! I have a complete machine shop with a lathe and milling machine in my garage. A few years ago with the same concept I turned and milled one of each of those tools out of aluminum for 1222 & 1225 cartridges. I don’t have to use set screws as they perfectly mount on the valve’s body. Instead of using a long 10-24 threaded rod, I center drilled and tapped 10-24 on a 1/2” threaded rod and installed a stainless steel 10-24 screw which protrudes an inch. As you know, sometimes those cartridges are so badly stuck that the stem breaks off. I also made some special tools and a tap to facilitate the removal of stuck cartridges.

      That is excellent. You have a puller for each, and a way to extract the barrel if it gets stuck in the valve. I am not a plumber, but if the barrel ever gets stuck, I will be rigging up some type of tool to grab onto the plastic barrel to pull it out.. Thank You for watching my video and commnenting.

    That is brilliant! For the homeowner that can't justify spending two hundred dollars on the commercial professional puller this is the way to go !
    I have subscribed to your channel based on this bit of genius alone! Thankyou !

      Just replaced two 1225 cartridges with the puller tool. It costs $16 at HD as someone else commented. It worked great. You just have to make sure you use it correctly. The tool is worth the $16. Makes the job a 15 minute job.

      The HD puller is merely a handle and is not a puller that uses mechanical adavntage. If the cartridge rubber folds over internally as they sometimes do the HD puller (handle) is useless for this job. What this fellow is showing how to do is build an actual puller that extracts with mechanical adavantage.

      @@kenny-Poo the puller I've had for years seems to be the same kind he demos. And it's not just a handle. That is why I say you have to use it correctly. There are several YT videos that show you the right way to use it. It does pull the cartridge out mechanically when you turn the nut on the puller with a channel lock wrench. You keep turning it with the wrench long enough where you can feel the cartridge unstick. Only at that point do you grab the handle, twist it back and forth and slowly pull out the cartridge. I've done it four times and it's worked every time. Very simple. No need to make a special tool. The other trick with this tool is to unscrew the screw at the top of the handle as much as possible without unscrewing completely. Again, there are YT videos that show you how best to use this tool.

    Clever design! However, you should note that before installing the new cartridge installers should lubricate it with the lubricant supplied by the manufacturer.

    Very nice. I did something similar 15 years or so ago when I replaced a 1222. Darn Danco puller didn't allow the nut to do the job so I had to make a socket like adaptor with two slots like you had in your pipe, that went between the Danco and the valve body. My 1222 was really stuck in there due to sharp edges on the valve body that caused the rubber pieces on the valve cartridge to get lodged in there really badly.

    Great job thanks. I have taken these out before without a puller and it can be difficult, good to see the right way to do it.

    I have pulled several Cartridges & a few that have been very hard..One thing I will add is get the Cartridge able to rotate to start, either add WD40 or Penetrating oil, after the Cartridge starts to rotate you know it will pull much easier..Also the pullers you make are awesome but the Moen Puller works well & if the outer part of Cartridge sticks tap inside to 1/2” thread, use 5”piece of 1/2” all thread through 3/4” socket with back up nut & wamo you have a decent puller device..The pullers you make are great but the average Joe doesn’t have the ability or skill to make..just my $0.02 Ken in AZ🌵

      The Moen pulller, and the Danco puller I bought are not full length pullers and basically are just a T handle requiring the operator to pull the cartridge out by tugging on it. That doesn't cut it if something is really stuck in there like happened to me with my 1222 that was in a valve body with sharp edges that cut into the rubber pads on the cartridge lodging them in firmly. I had to fabricate something like he did here. Just my 2c.

      Thanks for watching and commenting. If you purchase an inexpensive drill, tap set, and grinder, you can make your own. And you can re-use these tools around the house. Grinder to cut old pad locks that you may have lost the key. Drill to secure doors, and cabinets, etc.. And the satisfaction of D.I.Y. (do-it-yourself)

    All the vids on this Fail to talk about how important it is to get the outer part of the valve rotating to make it loose . Then it will almost fall out.

    No need for this ugly complication. Just use a screwdriver or pry bar for leverage lifting against a screw and washer in the stem, with a wood wedge or stacked wood blocks for fulcrum.

    • @RichardKinch
      @RichardKinch Před rokem +1

      @@danarello2563 Moen original screw is #10-24 x 5/8 pan head Phillips drive stainless-304. So just a shorter #10-24 x 3/8 of any type, with a #10 fender washer, would make a suitable pry cap.
