Award-winning filmmaker Antoine Allen had dreams like any other kid growing up, and it was those same dreams that allowed him to break through every obstacle in his path. Despite growing up poor in Jamaica, Queens, Allen was already rich with potential. Refusing to let this define his future, he moved forward with a passion, drive, and tireless dedication that has now become synonymous with the Antoine Allen brand. Allen began his career in the music industry, successfully managing hip-hop artists for many years. During that time, he had several experiences that opened his eyes to the fact that he had more to offer. It was at this time that the phrase “dream big or don’t dream at all” really hit hard. Forgoing the traditional film school route, he began educating himself on all creative, technical, and business aspects of the process and never looked back. Allen transformed himself into a successful writer, director, filmmaker and producer. He sold his first screenplay, No Where Land an animated feature film in 2008. As an award-winning director, Allen has gone on to be involved in a variety of film and music video projects. In the summer of 2010, Allen made his directorial debut with Split Decision a narrative short film exploring love, rejection and motivation, which he also wrote and produced. He took promotions into his own hands, launching a highly successful social media campaign. The trailer alone received over twenty-one thousand views on CZcams and countless ‘Likes’ on Facebook, all culminating in the Split Decision world premiere. The opening screening in New York City sold out. This should have come as no surprise since Allen sold out a premiere to a 3-minute music video that he had previously directed. On a personal level, the film allowed him to draw from his own experiences of beating the odds when life got tough, and was an experience that brought Allen full circle. His most recent project, a full-length feature film Life Is Too Short (2015) premiered to another crop of sold out audiences and has been honored with multiple awards and film festivals selections.

Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

Here is our full interview with Antoine - czcams.com/video/jT0DwEP-VN0/video.html
On being frustrated by people not appreciating or recognizing your work or not being given a break,Tyler Perry said..." Sometimes you're supposed to be hidden you're not supposed to be seen yet but your time will come"
Wow
👍 👍
When you build your own table, the food tastes better. Well said 🔥
How do bulid ur own table?
@@marvinmediafilmmaker Make the movies you want to watch.. and don’t go along to get along. Out of 100, probably 30 will love your vision, but it’s your vision, your passionate about it and it will show in your work.
@@KeiaJohn4-15 💥 boom
I remember hearing Tyler Perry tell the story about spending his entire tax return on his 1st play & it bombed. At the time I heard that story I thought an experience like that would destroy any motivation to press on. Fast forward to the project I'm working on now and I sacrificed my bucket list trip to Hawaii in order to finish the project. Go on vacation... or make a movie?
Regardless of the outcome, I do not regret finally stepping out of my comfort zone in order to 'build my own table'.
Nice bro! Your movie will come out great, I’m in the process of making my own movie right no while going through a rough patch with money. But hey I’ll meet you in Hawaii, when we finish our great project
@@carlosrodriguesoficial Haha appreciate you for sending your support! We'll discuss future collaborations & genre crossover ideas on the beach then.

“When you build your own table the food tastes better” Spot on. 👍 Wise words.
This is a great follow up to the previous video with Houston Howard. They're both saying "Don't wait. Built your own".
So true 100!
Boom
Oscar Micheaux is who Antoine was thinking of. Made a ton of films with all-Black casts. I think he might’ve been a contemporary of D.W. Griffith. But yeah, in a sense, Micheaux was the “first Tyler Perry.”
Thank you so much for watching
@@lolafeaturefilm1637 thank you
I wonder where are thouse films today, and who owns them.
This why I said no to sell the rights to my book series. I P is priceless.
Yes. So glad I saw this video. I'm planning a graphic novel so I will make sure to keep my IP.
People can say what they want about Tyler Perry, but what they can't say is that he isn't good at business.
If you insist on filmmaking being a “business.”
@@aaronsanders6162 Well it it a "Show-Business"
@@aaronsanders6162 the folks who don't realize it's a business are either fans or the artists being screwed for their work and talent.
everything is a business. Just Being talented isn't what makes you successful.
Ownership, exclusivity, talent,
To have ownership that's a part of the business aspect because you need to learn your rights and keep your rights.

11:23 may I add here that Spielberg was on his 6th movie, the first 5 were all successful, and the studios were still rejecting him; 'don't listen to the industry' could turn out to be true.

I disagree with about 3% of what this guy is saying but everything else is just inspiring: "When you build your own table, everything tastes better." Goddamn, that's captivating.

I appreciate and value Antoine’s perspective. There are too many options not to make your film. The only thing stopping you is you. Period.
This interview was so inspiring. I, too, am a huge Tyler Perry fan and a mentee that he doesn’t even know exists. I have watched all of his videos and followed him for years, and I am about to as he can say, “Green Light, my own opportunities“. He also said, “Stop waiting for people to invite you to a seat at their table. Build your own table.“ with free social media advertising. There is so much opportunity today. If you don’t take advantage of it, that’s just on you. My entire life and world is about to take off. Thanks for the inspiration. I loved it. 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
really loving these behind the scenes of the business side of film making
Yes
Great interview. I dig a lot of what he’s saying. As he apparently cones from the music industry, it makes sense that he would apply similar sensibilities and tactics on his film journey. I like that a lot. Ownership of one’s work on a Tyler Perry level is a lofty goal but I believe it’s doable. Definitely going to look into this person more. 👍🏾
I like this guy! I want to know more about his films. I can relate to him. All the power to you!
bro said, "they can't do what he do. it's in his DNA. the hu$$le is sold seperately." I fvcks with that message. @ the 9:05 mark.
I direct and write too and was nearly homeless as a kid and in my early twenties... thank god for my mother allowing me to stay with her. This video is greatly needed... thank you Antoine Allen for your creative services!
Bless you, Antoine. Great discussion.
This should have thousands of views. He's dropping gems!

Great tips. Watching from Kenya
Love these videos! Keep 'em coming :)
More to come!
M Night also owns his own films. He also finances it himself. It’s crazy
Yesss brother
Thanks for sharing.
Cheers John!
“Hustle Sold Separate!!!” That’ Merch!!!!
I'm walking this same path. I plan to have my own motion picture studio to be built here in Dubuque, Iowa where racism existed a number of years, and still does to a certain degree today. To me? This will do two things. 1. Open doors to black people that are not afforded opportunities to act in movie or use their own creative outlet and 2. stick a middle finger up to the bigots that continue to think we are not good enough! 💯 God bless!!
GEMS 💎
Thanks for sharing your ways with me much appreciated very insightful your awesome
This is classic
In other words, you can find all the excuses you want, if you're looking for reasons to not do something, but in the end, especially in this day and age, there are no valid excuses (or very few) to not get up and do something, anything, just your own thing; you can't peg any of your failings on others.
THIS VIDEO IS AMAZING 🙌🏾. I’m living this right now…it takes patience, money, and REAL hustle but it is POSSIBLE. Better Days The Movie out now on Amazon Prime and CZcams. Believe in You

What did you like about this video?
The end where you were asking him more or less, “What do you do when the gatekeepers come around and finally want you?” I think he made the point earlier: It’s all about ownership. It’s not empowering to be “included” to sit at the table. What’s empowering is when you’ve made a table that they feel is equal and want to sit at it as well. Or if you’re invited to take equal ownership (and responsibility) of the table, not just invited to sit at their table. His focus on ownership is the lesson.
Great comment, thank you for posting!
@@filmcourage You're welcome. Guess what: This video inspired me to make public an unlisted video I made months ago. A reflection on Do the Right Thing, but with a twist. Relates to the points above. I'd appreciate your thoughts: czcams.com/video/apO213If8Yw/video.html
Ownership is key.
I like that he says really true things like ownership and hard work. But I’d like to know how do I get ownership? Do I own the characters or the screenplay or the whole franchise?
this guY is deep! I've only Known Him through this Channel
If you can't make a whole film at once, film parts of it at a time. Find the simple parts with few sets. And don't make the biggest mistake of them all: less than great actors. Get the best actors you can afford and let them act.
I respect Tyler Perry from that aspect as well. You cant buy that kind of drive, rich parents cant give you that either, thats pure MUD BUILDING!
When you build your own table thee food taste better. Fire!
Oscar Devereaux Micheaux black filmmaker, producer, author born in Metropolis, Illinois on January 2, 1884. Died in Charlotte, North Carolina on March 25, 1951.
9:00 -- I don't want to bust anyone's bubble but I was editing at a post house in Hollywood, in the edit bay directly across the hall from me was Power... 50 wasn't there one single time in the months they had it there (at least M-F). The other producers were. I think he was more of a 'name' to get that show going.
I’m about to make my first feature as a writer-director. For those more experienced, how do I keep ownership of a film for future return? In the UK we often receive funding from companies like BBC, BFI and Film4. If I make it under my production company , I assume that wouldn’t be enough to say I own it if I work with one of these bigger film companies. What should I be reading/watching to learn more about IP of a film before working with these companies? Thanks
Amen🙏🏼🙌🏼📚
“The only gatekeeper is the person in the mirror” 💡
Since he mentioned that LOLA 2 was the first of his films which was wholly funded externally, I wonder what, if any, creative compromises he ended up having to make
This all is just common sense to me..I've always thought like this..I've never wanted to be a industry dude. My films are my babies and they are not for sale.
I heard. TD Jakes in a interview say he invested in Tyler Perry plays , not sure he helped in any other way ,, but this was after Tyler Perry had the plays started ,,

Hi 👋
I watched the whole interview and heard bro talk about Jay-Z and other people but he speak nothing about how he even start thinking about business and music where he first started. I WAS HIS ONLY ARTIST FIRST MAN TO TAKE HIM TO A STUDIO AND LET HIM START LEARNING MUSIC AND THINKING ABOUT ALL THIS KINDA BUSINESS, I STILL HAVE THE PHOTOS, VIDEO OF US PERFORMING LIVE AND THE CONTRACTS.. BUT OK ANTOINE... I SEE YOU BRO
Once again jewels found only in a treasure chest........
So how do you go about it, because if you pitch your film to a studio and say, so by the way I want to own what I direct or produce. They will laugh you out of the building.
Because as far as I understand it you have to make an independent company and do it yourself.
Sounds like its best to thrive as an independent filmmaker and make the studios pursue you.
Basically don’t rely on a studio. Be your own studio.
@@dissolution how
@@wonderfullymademedia how to start , just make a film today ?, rent a theatre and put film in what would be best way to start , or even crowdfund

George Lucas??
Not the same. He didn't (and does not) own his own IP. He used studio money to make Star Wars and negotiated to keep merchandising rights, when the movie was a surprise hit those rights were the key to him cashing in on $4 billion. Tyler Perry owns his IP and entire catalog, not just a piece of it or certain rights.

Same dash helped perry. And he ripped off dame.
What i learned about Tyler Perry is that you can make money from shit... fertilizer
I want to do same own my films besides being an Entrepreneur /Film director. I have passion for films. I'm an proud Tyler Perry fan I dream of meeting him. When I was in Atlanta before Covid I was looking for Tyler Perry & his studio I was hoping I ran into him so we can talk business I want an film career, I never audition for acting roles in my life. I never been in acting classes. I want to learn filmmaking, theatre, entrepreneur, & Animation. I want to do the Opposite of Tyler Perry & Other Film Directors. My long term goal having my own company , my own studio & going on tour. I'm refocusing on my high school diploma 🎓 I want to relearn acting I want to get to know people better accept Trump Supporters. I'm not an Donald Trump fan nor supporter I hated that Evil racist Dictator. I don't want to meet Trump Supporters I don't want them in my films & plays no ma'am no sir. I hope to meet Tyler Perry I want to learn from him
Let's be honest. Tyler Perry doesn’t own his either. Lion Gate still owns his films.
Lion Gate distribute his films, Tyler owns the IP. Get your facts straight.
Why do you people like lying he own IP of all his work
Title: What Tyler Perry Taught Me About The Film Business. First question: Have you ever met Tyler Perry? Answer: No. Maybe “What I learned about the Film Business from studying Tyler Perry’s Success” would have been a more appropriate title. Whadduya think?
Nah. The title the title works. You can learn from someone without meeting them.
"Taught" not in the sense of directly, personally, but indirectly through his story. I guess you could read it as "What Tyler Perry's success story taught me ..."
I understand. But he own 100% of nothing
