Upcycling a thrifted curtain // Nino Jacket sew along (free pattern for beginners)

  • Hi loves!
In this sew along I'm upcycling a thrifted curtain into a jacket. It's not a tutorial, just a little semi silent vlog where I sometimes talk about my findings, if that makes sense. I'm showing everything in this video: the good and the bad! Mostly the bad, lol, but I'm not striving for perfection.
When I look at other sewing videos I only see perfection and that can be quite demoralizing. I just want to be honest and show that I fail too and don't make perfect hems either. It's all good, as long as you're having fun!
    - FREE PATTERN // I'm using the Nino Jacket pattern by Fabrics Store, you can download it here:
    fabrics-store....
    I used size 4/6
Here is their blog with the instructions:

    02:29 Tools
    02:41 Preparation
    03:45 Getting ready to sew
    05:53 Sewing
    10:43 The result
15:13 Little pep talk for my fellow beginners
As I am a total nerd and felt horrified with the quality of the previous vlogs I just filmed this in 4K. A little extra, I know ;)
The next videos won't come out very quickly, but I'm having a lot of fun with learning making videos.
Thank you for watching and please let me know if you're going to make this jacket or have a question. Have fun sewing!
Thank you for your time ❤️

Hi Angelica, love the jacket and hefty is beautiful. Always test the material with your iron on a scrap that you used for the tension. I highly recommend a 50cm piece of washed silk organza as a pressing cloth for delicate fabrics and damp cotton followed by brown parcel paper for wool and wool mixes. Old tailors techniques. All the best, Angela.

Hi Angelica; fellow beginner sewist here. I noticed that you were using the sharper end of the seam ripper to unpick the seam. Not sure if you always do that or if it just happened to be this one time when you were filming, but that's not the best way to unpick. The pointier end often snags the fabric and can rip it. You want to use the pointer end only to get the first few bits of sewing unpicked; then you slide the shorter end with the ball point on it into the seam and use it to slice through all of the threads. The ball point separates the fabric for you to help prevent ripping the fabric. I apologize if you knew this already, and for the unsolicited advice.

Ahh I had no clue, thank you! I always thought the sharper end was the most easiest to get underneath the stitches, but it makes perfect sense to only use it for the first few parts! Thank you! I think you just made my life a bit easier :D

Hi new subscriber..from UK.. For the fraying have you considered trying a French Seam. Lots of tutorial on youtube. Very popular on historical costumes....

Hi! Ahh yes that’s a good one. I have often used a french seam and didn’t thinn of that, how simple it can be! Thank you! 😊

What a great idea to use old curtains for it! I really like how it turned out. Will definitely try my hands on the pattern 😊

Great make! And your sewing machine is so beautiful!! I printed the Nino pattern, but I have no idea how to pick a size. It is not on the pattern or on the blog. Am I missing something? Should I try and just cut one in the middle?

    • @angelicavis
      @angelicavis  Před rokem

Ahh yes that can be quite confusing! It works best with Acrobat Reader (the free version). It had multiple layers and every size had its own layer. It’s a bit of a hassle without Acrobat Reader so I would recommend downloading that if it’s not on your computer :)

Hav you seen the patterns for Japanese Rice bags, this fabric would be brilliant with contrast lining and drawstrings?

Oh I haven't, they look nice though! I think they would look great with this fabric yes! Great tip, thanks :)
