- In the last video, we talked about why you should not be a data scientist. If you still think that data science could be the right career path for you then this video is for you! In this video, we're going to flip it around and talk about why being a data scientist is awesome! Which I clearly think it is since I'm here talking to you still as a full time data scientist :)

About me
Hi, my name is Tina and I'm a data scientist at a FAANG company. I was pre-med studying pharmacology at the University of Toronto until I finally accepted that I would make a terrible doctor. I didn't know what to do with myself so I worked for a year as a research assistant for a bioinformatics lab where I learned how to code and became interested in data science. I then did a masters in computer science (MCIT) at the University of Pennsylvania before ending up at my current job in tech :)

I am an aspiring doctor, and you're gonna make me switch my career path for real to becoming a data scientist because of how cool you make it seem, lol I am questioning my existence now and whether my choice of medicine is the right one
Same here. Iâm an IMG and rn Iâm seriously considering data science
I started in nursing and ended up in data analytics lol Iâm thankful for the change
I'm a doctor who moved into data science
It's fine. Everyone changes directions when they start to think about their "why". DS is great not only to satisfy the inner "Mr. Krabs", but also because of the cool work type of work that tends to be both impactful and engaging and can go to various fields/industries.
This is me!! I based my entire schooling career around getting into medicine before realizing recently that it might not actually be for me. I know that my heart will always lie with statistics (lol thatâs a really weird thing to say). Thereâs just something immensely satisfying about the subject :) Super keen on data science now!
Yo! That indecisive career thing is happening in my life right now. Thanks, Tina for the insights.
Your videos are quite educational and informative. You have really good teaching skills. I won't be surprised if Tina becomes a Stanford prof in a few years from now :)
OH WOW that is incredibly flattering đŒâ€ïž

Ah as a fellow data scientist over in Sydney and small CZcamsr, completely agree with everything youâve shared - thanks for another great video Tina!!!
Great video - informative and entertaining! đđș
The ultimate back up career choice! :). I think the bit about discovering something new is probably the most important for me. If you do another video like this, could you please talk about the social side of working as a data scientist? I mean collaboration and friendships with colleagues
Thank you so much for these videos! I'm a high school English teacher with a masters degree and 9 years of experience and even by the time I retire, I won't be making as much as an entry level data scientist. I've been looking for a way out of teaching that would fulfill my love of lifelong learning and solving issues and working with numbers. I also love learning languages, and learning to code is basically that!
Everything you said in this video resonated with me super hard. đČ Thank you for sharing! I have always been interested in learning new things, but my problem is how the subject becomes dull once I develop an understanding of it, and then I want to move on to something else. I recently got back into coding and learned about data analysis/science (which has become a new obsession), but part of me is worried that it will get boring. WAS worried. Thanks to you, I'm feeling better about pursuing this new and ever-changing career interest! THANK YOU SO MUCH, TINA! Love your videos!
Hey Tina! I'm starting a CS master's for non-majors program just as you did and had a few questions about internships/recruiting. I sent the questions over LinkedIn. Thank you!
Thanks for this video- very easy to understand and personable!
Your videos are awesome and inspiring, guide me to the way of being a data scientist.
You're such good cheer to watch...taking away anxiety of the unknown and adding such positive vibes to people like myselfđđđ
by never get bored she means have so much work you often wont sleep on time and get paid in 'interest in the field' rather than real money like SWEs do.... Plus Data Science has a lot of coding nowadays
I watched most of your video what shows how sharp and clever person you are. Thankss aloot
Insightful video, Tina!
This is the exact thing I needed to hear! Data Science, here I come :)
Hi Tina! Iâm planning to apply for MCIT at UPenn and your videos are super helpful and informative. Thank you so much for your insights! â€ïž Iâve dropped a note to you on Linkedin and hoping to connect with you sometime there to discuss few questions regarding applications!
Hi, I really appreciate those edits, seems like you put a lot of effort into this video :)

wow!!! how many insights in a single vid!! thanks a lot :)
Very informative, I loved the edits!
You got a new sub! The indecisive thing did for me! I want to learn everything. I wanna go down rabbit holes. I'm in my 30s and only just growing up hehehe. Thanks for the amazing video
"Are you indecisive and can't figure out what you want to be when you grow up... even though you already might be grown up?"
That's me
Thanks! This was very helpful. As someone with a mild case of ADHD, I have had problems with boredom. I am older, but always enjoy learning new things and diving in where others fear to go. I enjoy new problems to solve. Searching for a career change, so I think I will try data science and follow my nose! đ€Ł Thanks again!!
I feel like I couldâve written this comment, though not that mild of adhd đ good luck!

Iâm in grad school now for DS but my background is in philosophy. Iâve been concerned about how that will impact my prospects for internships/careers but Iâm happy to have what Iâve seen validated in terms of the flexibility of the role from someone who knows. Thank you! Your videos are all really great.
I'm guessing by background you mean undergrad? How did you get into DS for grad school? (Genuinely curious) thanks!!
@@discharger61 Yes, I was a Philosophy major in undergrad. In summary, I always wanted to do analytics of some sort, so when I found DS I knew it was right. It's not as big of a leap as it seems. They're both analytical, it's just quantitative vs. qualitative. If you're asking how I got accepted, DS falls under information science so there aren't math or tech req's, and my credentials were well above average.
How is the transition from phil to DS going? Do you feel like understanding philosophy helps you in any way in the new area? I'm about to do a similar move. I've got a undergraduate degree in phil, and now i'm about to start both a master degree in epistemology and an undergraduate course in statistics.
hey, can go into detail about how you got into grad school for data science, it would really be insightful to me because i am a physics major and i have been wanting to switch to data science for my masters.
@@ianbotti7345 Phil to DS is honestly fine. Taking logic helped lol
Data scientistsâ responsibilities lie at the intersection between business analysis and data engineering, focusing on analytics and data technology.

There's literally no such thing as "entry level" for Data Scientist and Data Analyst job listings. Unless you mean listings that require expert SQL w/3-5 yrs Python exp.
True me doing Masterâs from one of the top 10 Comp Sci uni in NA and I still have no job and additionally experience needed is at least 3 years and more likely work experience rather academic. I think like 3-4 years ago the market was still new and didnât have much competition but now itâs not a good field in terms of job perspective.
@@Ms123kill I watched a number of Data Analysis/Scientist Influencers (that's basically what these vids are) touting Google's Data Analytics Certificate. That's another waste of time, effort and money that gets one nowhere.

Hi Tina! Have a great week ahead. Love from India
I'm in my senior year of college and even though I don't plan on going to grad school in another 2-3 years, I want to get my MS in data science!
Very informative and well explained
So, weirdly enough, all of this is interesting to me - like, the bad-side video, and the good-side video. Super cool!
"hey guys how's it going?" Never stop saying this. i love this part the most
I wanted to become a DS because i didn't want to do web development, that is what I was doing at the moment. Couldn't do IOS dev had my reasons), Android dev didn't excite me.

Thank you so much! If i saw this later i think i would mess up my career path. đ Now i know what should i go
Its been a long time since I commented (or had time for youtube, still don't but trying to distract myself from panicking over my Discrete math class), but if I recall, when I last commented I was still working on my associates. I finished that right as covid hit, took a year off, and am now a Junior studying Data Science. Right now in Statistics (easy A so far), some nonsense Liberal Arts class (forced to take it, has nothing to do with D.S.), Discrete (halp.) and intro to java (Most fun I've ever had in school). Your videos are what inspired me to pursue this major/career path, Thank You so Much! Its the perfect fit for me, a healthy mix of computer programming and math, with a dash of whatever I'm interested in for fun (physics, engineering, stats/combinatorics, even political theory and philosophy (thought that might be a bit of a stretch as far as how it relates to D.S., i think i can make it work)). Again, Thank You for introducing me to this wonder field!!!
If you don't mind can I know where are you studying?
thank you Tina! â€
Thanks! This was helpful!
just like always, it's an awesome video. very informative. tnx
Thank you for inspiration â
Love your videos đ
Hey Tina ! I love your videos and I became interested in them for the study techniques for technical topics.
I never expected this video to spike my interest in becoming a data scientist but it did so much ! Besides your video on the negative sides of being a data scientist, can you recommend ressources for people like me who would like to know if data science is for them ?
You should do a video about the computer you use to work as data scientist! :))
Yes, the boredom of my current position is exactly the reason why Iâm looking into Data Scientist positions. Plus I like learning new concepts and skills. I have a Bachelorâs in Finance and Accounting as well as a MBA in Finance, also 8 years of experience as a Data Analyst so hopefully I can gain entry in the Data Scientist role.
Hey!ñ wondering why you arenât happy with a data analyst role? What would be different if you become a data scientist instead?
@@nataliam7029 More analytical work, way better paycheck, better work options, etc
Hey Connie I want to be a data Analyst and started working on it. Can please guide me what major skills are required? Thanks in advance..
thanks a lot...was in need of motivation
Thanks! Idk I want to not starve and be left alone. I don't know who I want to be. But lots of these points are very attractive!
In terms of salary shouldnât we do an internal rate of return on the median investment required to get into a data science position. And index that investment along with the area of employment to find the real dollar value of what the return is on becoming a data scientist.
Love your videos
Very inspiring and knowledgeable
Thanks Tina !! I am a biologist, and i am thinking to migrate to the data science area, let's see what will happen
I am a very indecisive person. I let my parents to decide my education and job. Currently very much want to quit my current job. I have finished Google Data Analytics certification. But I pretty much lacked the portfolio to apply for analytics job. Still not confident with my technical skills too.
I hope you're right that data science is fit for indecisive person like me. On the other hand I wish I can pursue my hobby in music and sport.
Get a your degree in data science first , then work at a company like google making 120,000 a year , then purse your hobbies in music and sport. That way you have money to purse your hobbies fully. Just my advice and what I am doing right now.
Very informative.đđđ
4:00 Bioinformatics, Woohoo! Thatâs true, we never get bored but may possibly get overwhelmed! :)
Yesss haha đđââŹ
Data Scientist entry skillset is higher than for software engineer... but the difference between junior to mid-level to senior to staff engineer is so high that the pay grows fast.
Both careers are ridiculously well paid though so that should be the last thing to think about when choosing between the two :p
I like your sense of humor đ
Ah the rabbit hole is definitely what I'm feeling rn đ .. Alright no more perfectionism gonna submit anyway ! Also absolutely LOVED the editing Tina ! The lighting thing - as funny and doomy as it was :3 - also showed how much time and effort you put in these videos â€ïž

Hey, Tina! As a new subscriber, I dont know much about your career path. Are there any videos on that? :)
I love this video!!!!
Looks like exactly what I need.
Good for you âșïž
What worries me about the Data Scientist role is that there isn't that much entrepreneurial potential. Software engineers can build things from nothing, Electricians can start their own business, but what can a Data Scientist do other than work for an employer?
Was Steve jobs a software engineer or electrician? I think you got the jest.
He was a legendary entrepreneur who had a knack for solving real-world problems. I think that's the entrepreneurial spirit you are looking for and anyone can become an entrepreneur irrespective of the job they are doing right now.
i mean can t you build anything by analyzing data? Software engineers can only code a website (and not every SE knows how to make a website or an app)
@@luxraider5384 Coding a website is not so big stuff nowadays. After watching an udemy course, anyone can build a basic website. Startup requires different skills and it is a different ball game altogether.
@@rocknroll7967 yeah but generally people often think being a SE can make you an entrepreneur by making apps and websites where it s just a fragment of what you have to do
@@luxraider5384 I totally get it what you are trying to say. Entrepreneurs have the builders mindset which overlap with software engineers.
Data scientist also builds ML model to solve real world problems and they tend to have very specific domain knowledge(lets say healthcare).
So you might start a billion dollar startup in health care because you would already know the pain points in that industry.
Coding is awesome with ppl like you I like all of your videos...
Thanks, Iâm a software dev and considering to change my career to IT after the video.

Awesome video! I'm trying to gain as much knowledge and direction as possible considering I've just discovered DS and want to know if I would "qualify" to be one. I just graduated with a BS in Marketing and got accepted into grad school for an MS in Marketing Analytics. Will this educational background cut it? It seems most people have degrees in science/math based subjects.
After watching this video, I realized: I want to be a data scientist. Thanks, Tina.

I have some questions!
1. I'm very interested in math.
but I've not used math for very long time.
Are strong math skills crutial to
survive as a data scientist?
2. Do you think that the work which data scientists do is creative?
Hay Tina, make a video about how DS can be helpful in art , like graphic design
Hi,
Thank you for your videos! I've been learning a lot from them! I had a quick question. I am currently pursuing a masters in data analytics but my current tech background is non existent basically. So for someone who doesn't come from a strong tech background, but is hoping to build it up by the end of the masters, is an entry level data scientist role feasible to earn or would I have to advance my way up to a data scientist by starting at a data analyst or another role first? Hopefully that made sense.
I can relate about being easily bored and loving to learn new things.
Oh my goodness can I just say that the Mr. Krabz interview HAD ME IN TEARS.... I shouldn't have laugh as hard as I did
I am a masters in Mathematics. Studying Data Science now. Hoping to work with Google soon.
Awesome!!
Ok she mentioned Cali so that can also add to why the pay is high. Most SWE and Data science position are in the six figure range because of the cost of living is much higher. To make that kind of money over lets say Virginia, Maryland you will need experience that is a must. So the glassdoor number is not to be taken seriously unless, like she said you live in a area where the cost of living is much higher. The average salary for someone with a Data Science( Education) on the west coast with a masters 77k to 89k this is assuming you get hired directly from school. The higher the salary usually commensurates with experience. I have also heard that some employers will look at where you previously worked and how much you were paid. To get an idea if the position would be suited for the pedigree assuming you came from Cali might could be a good thing or a bad thing.
LMFAO at the Mr. Krabs clip! While that's not the only reason I got into this field, it's a nice perk
Research division ftw. Don't have to worry too much about production, that's the jack of all trades' problem. We also get to use the superior language that is R.

hi! I'm a sophomore in high school, and I'm interested in data science because I've always been good at math and I loveee math, I love analysing stuff in english and thinking deeply about topics as well, so i was thinking "is there a job that would pay me to think a LOT and deeply, and also have math involved.. maybe computer science?" and then i found data science AA it feels like the perfect career for me, but I'm just scared I won't be that good at comp sci ):
I'm basing my junior and senior years around being able to be a computer science undergraduate, because I'm okay at math and I'm okay at writing, so computer science would be the thing I need to work on the most! I hope this thing goes well I'm so scared I'm gonna regret this in the future ;-;
