Man it is so weird listening to Joe complain about how annoyingly pretentious everyone else is. The mental gymnastics this man must go through to ensure he doesn't have one ounce of self awareness must be just exhausting.
A glimpse into a serial killers mind, absence of self awareness is what allows them to do what they do 😂
You guessed the guy was rhys right?
Like he was the most obvious guess next to Kate.
@Bree Coward
Saw it coming from a mile away.
@UnofficialBeauty Queen Not everybody bro. A lot of serial killers are perfectly aware of what they do. But they have no conscience and isn't affected by their actions, they even get off on it. Joe here is delusional and has some sort of saviour complex, its different
''there are zero twists this season'' I think the second half balances this out
The second half has a bunch in the final 3 episodes
Literally. The second half made season 4 my favorite season of You.
The plot twist is insane (literally) 🤣
He needs to watch volume 2
It also kind of explains why everything Nadia said was the same fashion the murders ended up occurring in
Well, part 2 kinda settled it. Not gonna say anything too spoilery but this season's first part trolled us so hard into believeing Joe is some sort of detective now lmao.
I know right 😂😂
already spoiled by saying that mate
@Zee Nah, part 1 was so off-beat that everyone unconsciously would've picked up that there was something funky going on. The writers were cooking up a storm.
@dainluke Idk kept me guessing atleast. My mind went there just once but definitely didn't guess who the actual murderer was
honestly i think Rhys is the best character of this show, by far... his acting was so incredible, i was speecheless by his talent
Penn NEEDS an audiobook or something of the sort. His voice has definitely changed since the first season, in the best way.
he has a podcast
That vocal fry makes me want to rip my ears out.
@sim_sim_salabim yup, its too much
@sim_sim_salabim now after watching i thibk the change of the tone of his voice is intentional
I am actually surprised to see this interpretation of the season! I felt like Joe finally had to take a sip of his own medicine and is forced to reflect his behaviour, but fails to do so which clearly shows he is incapable of changing. Also I thought it was really refreshing to see how jumpy he gets now being the one who is stalked, yet at the same time not even realising he's been basically showing the same sick behaviour all the time.
Also, I really appreciated that his stalker apparently had a redemption arc, but it in the end it turns out he's just lied about it. Both are white men with a sense of false grandiosity, white knights, false saviours who cannot change a thing for the better, particularly because they're using violence. The stalker clearly mirrors Joe's behaviour and emphases that, no matter how he's lying to himself, is always gonna be a fake white knight and a psychopath. He might look like the sanest person compared to these rich sickos, but he's rotten to the core, too. Also, I liked the take on making this season's "You" not a love interest.
I really enjoyed it tbh. But I can totally understand y'all and your position nevertheless.
I hope You is a fluffy purry cat next season :)
this comment made me love this new season!
With all my respect, this is the best comment ive seen so far. Everyone is missing the point of this season which brings a new perspective, such as Joe being mirrored by a person exactly like him, forcing him to feel as the victims he hurt. He plays the hero role because he wants to be better, denying his true nature at the same time. He cant accept he s a monster because he s scared of monsters himself. If u pay attention, Joe likes innocent, pure people. As soon as he discovers damage in people he idolized, he would feel repulsed and become cold, avoidant, sceptic, the way he became with Love once he knew she s like him, a predator.
sorry, can you remind me about the stalker's redemption arc?
The way Joe told Kate what happened to Malcolm and then could twist the truth of his past in a way that still didn't make him lie but made it all make sense and kind of sound OKAY completely freaked me out ngl🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠 I honestly find him scarier this season
‼️Yeah I totally agree! And no one has mentioned that because the series is heavily based on literature that each season follows a lot of the tropes of a certain genre of fiction and then subverts them. The first season is subversion of the romantic comedy novel, the second season idr a lot about honestly, but I think it was more psychological with Joe dealing with himself and his past, a psychological thriller subversion. The third season was a take on the stepford housewives suburbia where everything looks perfect on the outside but everyone has secrets. And this fourth season is about you know the Agatha Christie who dun it detective novel. So far. I have a feeling since the mystery is solved now the second part of the season is going to become a play on the cat-and-mouse genre. I personally love this season so far! I like how Joe realistically jumps through mental hoops and the true to life portrayal of cognitive dissonance. He really believes he's NOTHING like Rhys. When in reality Rhys is a better person than him. Joe harms women who he is obsessed with and manipulates their lives. Controls and hurts them and those who they care about. While Rhys is harming terrible people who use their wealth to hurt those less fortunate. So Rhys is morally a better person than Joe. But as in real life bad people never believe they are bad people. They justify their horrifying actions in their own minds and really believe they are the good guys. EDIT: I HATED the end of the season. But I wonder if next season is going to be like a play on The Wolf of Wall Street genre. Rich guy uses wealth to get away with crimes. Who knows but I really didn't like how Rhys was all in his head the whole time 😭
He’s a master manipulator
Lol u should Wstch the new episode.. they came out like 3 days ago😅
@Omar Calvo I watched them all the first day they came and I’ll need therapy for at least 3 business months🤚🏼
@milk literally Ik joe was fucked but god damn😅
Dude walks around like he didn't cut off a toe.
He does limp but ive often see that he walks just fine like it's just an error for the actor lol
I doubt cutting off 1 toe will make you very instable. Probably in the beginning but you body might get used to it and find a way to walk
2 toes actually (on the same foot/left foot)
@Fr_g yeah, in Friends, Monica cut off Chandler’s toe by accidentally dropping a knife and he made the joke “that’s why for the next year everyone called me Sir Limps-A-Lot lol
I saw a theory that says Rhys is a figment of Joe's imagination (a la Fight Club) because Rhys always interacts with Joe, but never with anyone else. Basically, Rhys is a real person, but his relationship with Joe & the group is in his mind. That (plus the fact that he sees Rhys as "relatable") makes it an interesting possible plot twist.
That’s actually a really good twist! You could be onto something there
I could see that, but that’s almost as dumb as it being Rhys.
ahhhhh u were right (just finished p2)
Hey! Please after watching the second part, you should totally do another video of what you feel/think about what happens, I definitely think it’s a good twist on things, I enjoy what they have done with the series.
I just finished it and I literally couldn't close my jaw throughout the last 2 episodes😭😭😭
Part two was a whole roller coaster. My jaw dropped
its great ngl, but honestly the twist made me feel like its a Fight Club knockoff
@lenavis split personality doesnt belong to fight club
@lenavis or Mr robot...
YOU SHOULD'VE WAITED FOR PART 2 TO COME OUT BEFORE MAKING THIS VIDEO!!
Cause boy that EP6, I think, twist is CRAZY!!!!
FR. chills lmao they knew what they were doing by making two parts
I didn't think it was a twist at all. I already knew that was happening since the beginning of the season
@Lena Courtney cause u read the theories well done u arent special
@Lena Courtney can you please spoil me ? I dont want to watch the hole season
I actually liked that they changed the formula for this season.
Its interesting
Yeah the story is really interesting but somehow the other characters are boring af
@Arah Qurany I think it was intentional. To show how vain/hollow people are
Me too
@Arah Qurany yea they were flat and boring in the first part and I felt like I couldn't even relate to them, hate them or even like them, because they were just flat, but in the second part, I saw a lot of character development, especially with pheobe, kate, roalhd, and phoebe's husband
Ironically the blinds thing is the most believable aspect of You for me, cause my old roommate NEVER closed hers and would actively open the patio ones completely so you just saw direct access to the entire apartment. Our neighbor in the next building also did the same thing, and when I moved for college I noticed that people in dorms and in off campus housing do it left and right. I feel like such a creep sometimes cause I’m not purposely trying to see your entire apartment but bro why are your windows bare????
Exactly! It’s baffling.. get some blinds or something, I feel like it’s definitely a British thing
@Who’s That Chick nah, I think it’s just a white people thing in general, cause that’s been the only common factor I’ve seen here in the US
that aspect always baffles me as well, just get some blinds or curtains ESPECIALLY if you have windows so close to another building. I live in Europe and everyone has curtains and blinds, there might be some exceptions if the window is facing a field/forest/place with no houses and roads around, but in general if it's possible for people to look inside, be it from other buildings or roads/paths and such we simply put up curtains and once the sun sets blinds. it's such a common sense thing that I don't understand how all those folks never thought of it.
Tbh blinds if they’re not included with your house/apartment are so expensive 😭 I get why some nsu not have them, especially college students or those who move frequently. But at least get curtains!
I get that Joe being surrounded by horrifically unlikeable people is kind of the point but then they take up so much of the screen time that you don’t actually want to spend any more time with them. All the characters in this new season are annoying and unlikeable to an intolerable degree.
So were all the characters in season 3, except for Marienne. Suburbian hell vs. posh British hell.
They're supposed to be like that
Like in every season tbh
thing is the show is meant to show you things through Joe's eyes until around Season 3 when perspective shifted to Love but only briefly, so you're annoyance to the characters is also meant to be Joe's annoyance to them. granted we as the audience are able to say that he's a creep bcs we all know he's bein one but it's also kind of like how as a normal person you tend to focus on others more than yourself
What about Kate ? She is obviously unlikeable but she is an interesting character and I like her relationship to Joe so far
I think this season is brilliant. It’s somewhat contributing to the audience one step further to understand Joe. Human’s major problems are boredom and discipline. Joe is well educated from books, but boredom is on Joe’s front door all the time. And all the trauma he got over with. As you can see, he just wants love. He doesn’t kill irrationally like Love. Or mindlessly and soullessly like the elites. His perspective and his reading is the amazing thing to keep the audience engaged in what they’re spending time on. I think the writer and the show want to tell you that there’s the good in the bad and there’s the bad in the good. Anyhow, Joe is a horrible human. He knows it. At least he’s not a hypocrite. I think I understand and sympathize with him more in this season. The restraint, the will power, the control, the emotion, the fear, just so you can see how basic of a human being he is.
May I ask what do you think ...now? 😂😂😭😭
@тут было смешное название that he is bat sh*t crazy
@тут было смешное название he's genuinely insane and i guess nobody should be shocked but man, i was really disappointed when he killed nadia's boyfriend (forgot his name) i guess i get the whole "rhys was actually all in his head" plot but him killing her bf was so heartless.
Now look, i'm not mad about the fact that "YOU" wasn't another woman he was obsessed with. I like that they tried to do something different with the story so that wouldn't be repetitive
I cannot believe the lengths people go to explain how Love deserved what happened to her because she was a psycho but at the same time rooting for Joe to get away with all his shit lmao wtf is going on
I actually liked this season I like how they make every season feel like a different story
These takes aged not quite as well as one may have hoped. Turns out the writers room at you are actually pretty great
I fail to see how. The show constantly repeats itself. Second season was just the first in that Joe gets a new obsession, Delilah is the non-white woman he has a short-lived relationship with, just like Kate/Karen, whatever her name was, and Jenna Ortega’s character just being a different take on Paco in that they’re both meant to humanize Joe and be the troubled kid for him to look out for. Heck, the guy abusing Paco’s mom and the guy that was targeting Delilah’s sister were the exact same character, role-wise. The white guy that's abusing or planning to abuse a non-white female character.
The show then repeats itself again by doing the “who killed Delilah” story all over again. Only this time, it’s some guy in his apartment. Add on top the third season getting extremely liberal (tell me a story, don’t preach to me) and I found it pretty damn lame, to be honest. They use the same story in the first season and add little changes to it for the second and third. That’s not intelligent writing. That demonstrates a lack of creativity and a fear of taking risks. It's the same thing over and over, how is that a sign of great writing?
And Beck was an idiot. She made herself way too easy to stalk. No curtains, not even when she has men over, didn’t lock her electronics, very easily manipulated by her friends. It was hard to believe.
In my opinion, the show’s extremely stupid. I’ll never watch it again.
@Equestrian Midnight how was the third season "getting too liberal" lmfao
Joe getting a professorial position without a publication record and connections out the wazoo is just amazing... He would be lucky to get a two term position as a substitute lecturer.
Remember he used to restore old books and even faked a label on a bottle of wine so it seemed expensive… he easily could have forged all of that
Apparently he can also forge references at other universities, who the hiring department would absolutely call to vet him
maybe his fake identity has previous experience? i havent watched the show yet so idk
Joe moved up the ranks higher than Beck ever did and ever could have if she lived
@Jacqueline Miller Forging a label is a bit easier than faking real life connections lmao
Duuuude, I kinda felt the same, even if I liked their take on it. But THEN, I watched the second part, and... oh man, I won't spoil anything, but I think it will satisfy every concern you had about this part (especially if you say you relate to Joe). Great video !
The last few comments you made is what everyone felt at the end of part 1, underwhelmed basically and disappointed. But it's actually pretty clever to keep us waiting a month to introduce the real story in part 2.
I just want to say that I really dig your animations. Your vocal presentation is good as it is, but those animations - some a few frames short, others more complex and detailed - really complete the job and truly gives your content the finish it deserves. Great job, I'm a fan!
I actually liked the fact that this season, Joe is on the other side, like he's the one being stalked. But yeah that twist was incredibly predictable and I really wish there is gonna be some more plot in the second half.
I love how you mentioned the pee jar because that's NEVER MENTIONED AGAIN.
Three Small Things I Just Hated Most About You S3:
- Pee Jar is never mentioned again...
- What happened to Ellie from S2?
- WHAT did Joe say to Phoebe (that thing she kept saying CHANGED HER LIFE or whatever)?
Three Big Things I Just Hated Most About You S3:
- Finding Marianne has no buildup
- I saw the 'big twist' coming about Joe and who actually did it
- Joe falls for this boring business lady that doesn't want a relationship? CHEMISTRY WHERE?! And she's BORING.
P.S. I'd love to see you cover the second half, AND discuss the spoiler content (and just put a disclaimer for spoilers for your fans at the beginning)!
joe’s voice gets deeper and raspier in every scene💀
no fr🤨 like I don't remember his voice ever sounding that annoying
it was getting so hard to watch like atp all I’m hearing is grumbling 💀
Literally, bro has that "throat cancer" voice
it’s called getting older
and i love him for that.
I do think that part 2 really saved the season because of the cinematic appeal. Also I’ve always loved joe and love so I love season 2 and 3. And season one is just so iconic. So even with it’s pretty stupid parts I still really enjoy it.
I really loved season 4. It was a complete twist of events. I loved how the writers turned joe around. To me it’s one of the best season so far! Maybe it’s the European’s charm!!!
That curtains thing made me laugh. I was literally just talking about this the other week with my councilor. Saying how I often lost what was going on in films and snows because I would be sat questioning why yet another person who can clearly afford a really nice place to live can't seem to afford curtains or blinds or at the very least work out how to use the ones they actually do have in place.
I love this show. I’m excited for the rest of season 4 I think there’s going to be more twists than we expect. With each season of YOU we know that they always use the books that are shown on the show to foreshadow certain events or leave us clues.
I totally agree with you. It felt like Joe had no autonomy this season and he was just getting pushed around by the plot. This season was a lot less compelling than previous seasons to me.
The ending to season 3 was a perfect way to end the series. Leaving us with Joes complete delusion of being able to track down a woman in London and us wondering if he is able because he is indeed that crazy.
Not the ending yet, it was only part 1. part 2 comes out march 9.. then we'll see the true ending
@LiterallyWhatDoIPutHere you got confused they’re talking about season 3 the season we’re watching right now is season 4
Yeah, his kid is free from monster parents and his psycho wife was gone along with his life in the states. It could have easily ended there with just the implication "Joe will never change"
Its either gonna be a repeating cycle until he dies or ends up in jail since the point isnt about finding someone who loves him since he subconsciously enjoys the hunt
@Andrea Gamez to bw fair they said London instead of Paris which is what we were left with in season 3
put a sock in it!
I actually liked that it did a self aware paint by number genre beat while still keeping its cynical wit and social commentary. I don't think it's bad just because something is a trope. Just like there are only so many songs, there are only so many stories to tell. How many times have you watched a Hero's Journey? An Anti-Hero's struggle to integrity. We've seen it. The art is in the nuance; in what you can do with the given medium. And although I hated some of the characters, I enjoyed hating all of them.
I mean, I think this season has been great so far. Sure, it is a tad linear, and the twists have been fairly predictable, but the story has some meat to it. I enjoy seeing Joe in constant terror for stuff he hasn’t even done (even though amidst these things he kills again and again). And the identity part happened BEFORE he became a professor so very likely that identity has some background to it that are making him getting that job easier. And the entire time, in all of the seasons, there is a huge point to the ironic standpoint Joe has on life. He is an incredible sociopath and narcissist. He gives himself excuses for the things he does and the way he acts even though he literally does the things he despises or judges others for. That is the bit. He’s still psycho Joe. At no point should you feel bad for him, all the torture mentally & physically he experiences is valid.
Listen, I was born and raised in New York City and the sheer amount of people who live in high-traffic, touristy areas and do not use shades/blinds/curtains is actually ridiculously large. TO BE FAIR, I think it's very much a narcissistic transplant kinda thing, people who moved here and want to be *seen* living here by any means possible. I honestly believe that there are people like that in every major city, who thrive on the idea of being looked at while they're at home because it feels like some measure of success or something.
I totally feel the "I'm disappointed where it goes because I love the show so much"-argument. Season 4 was not bad for itself. But being the 4th season of YOU...
Idk.
I really hope there will be some twist in the second part of the season.
Thank you so much for your video. I love your content ♡
Hearing once again how Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is the example of the main caracter getting to do whatever they want has my eye twitching
Honestly sounds about right, people hiring teachers with no background information….sounds like every teacher at public high school
it's a friggin university, that ain't no high school lol you don't just go there like hey yey I wanna be a professor lmao there's a ladder you gotta climb ans that shit takes yyyyeeears and years
Isn't it like fucking Oxford?
but he got a resumé saying he graduated from some prestigious university
If only it was that easy to be a HS teacher 🙄
This guy is talking about high schoo not university guys so stop correcting them lol I'm sure they know what they meant
This season for me was actually refreshing! The first 3 seasons were very similar and it would have gotten boring if this was another iteration of that. It also shows a little character growth with Joe trying to change FOR ONCE and is kinda forced to since he is the one being preyed upon in a way.
Part 2 is peak, that shit was INSANE.
I genuinely loved this season and I was a little sad that you were disappointed with it Alex. Still enjoyed the video and hope the second half of the season is better for you ☺️
Honestly I very much liked this season. Thing is, not every season can have the same tone because the whole premise of the show is that hes different, hes a creep and much his actions have dire consequences so he constantly has to change and run.
My all time favourite season was the 2nd, because we sed him in a new world, where he has to learn all the rules and get to know all the people from scrap, similar to season 4, but very unlike season 1 and 3 where he already has some roots and somewhat of a wiggle room. We see Joe in a this new world where he not only has to adapt to it, but adapt his psychosis to this world and make his "creepiness" work.
Unlike season 2, season 4 is obviously different because he's trying to quit that sort of life. The means of adapting to this new world is him trying to remove what makes him weird and psychotic. As he says in the beginning "this is my european vacation". He's trying to stay as far away he can from his past life. Does that mean he should be forgiven? Of course not, but this isn't about redemption, its all about the evolution of a man who suffers from a severe mental illnesses.
Obviously this season has had some not that great points, the detective just handing him a new identity was a somewhat deus ex machina, but other smaller similar stuff like that, overall its a great season so far and highly enjoyable.
i feel like they might reveal that joe is the serial killer & he hallucinated Rhys' involvement in part 2.
He's always tried to justify his actions as consequences of him being cornered, having no other choice, the better good etc. So him hallucinating a killer manipulating him is kinda on-point, that way he can still believe he is the hero of the story. His meaningful interactions with Rhys have always been when they were alone, the texts from the killer disappears,...
That's exactly what happens...
@Electric well, i did post that comment before the 2nd part of S4 was released
I actually really like this season. It is a bit formulaic to the "who dunnit" trope, but I prefer this little change up to them basically doing season 1 over and over again with slight variations
Im glad i have someone else who enjoys it. I really enjoyed the plot and was gripped all the way through!!😊
I enjoyed it too! I thought it was kinda refreshing l, but still had elements from the past few seasons that made Joe still feel like the first guy from season 1
I think every season was pretty unique. First season was more stalking a new girl, 2nd season was falling for a new girl but new girl also turns out to be murder, 3rd season Joe wants to be a happy family but is angry with his wife fucking things up for him, 4th season Joe wants to start over but someone wants to frame him for murder and it's a who dunnit. Every season is pretty unique imo. Maybe 5th season is going to be more about the police having found out about Joe's murders and he now has to appear in court.
I’m enjoying it too it feels like his character have evolved in my opinion
I also loved it
I honestly like the change of pace, there's only so many times you can see the same plot over and over again, I'm glad they changed it up on season 4, and making it a whodunit was such a great idea. Also, it really shows Joe changing, he never liked killing, and obsession doesn't always have to involve a woman.
I just started watching this show and was wondering how they kept it up for 4 seasons. I find Dexter a bit more sympathetic and self-aware than Joe. So far it mainly seems to be Joe vs. Himself, cause nearly everything he's protecting the girl from is stuff he does.
Other than the hottness factor, I will never understand how this show is popular and NEVER received any backlash for how it glorifies stalking
Every season has a unique take and is different but still along the same storyline makes it enjoyable
idk if i’ve just been watching too many of your old videos and not enough of your new ones but damn ur animations gotten a lot better recently- like it’s always been great but it’s getting even greater
Dan really went nuts after everything with Blair and Serena
Yk what, I too like to think Dan and Joe are the same people. They might as well be considering the way GG ended 🤷🏾♀️.
@Oseremhen Penn Badgley actually talked about this in an interview, same character, different eras.
LMAO
Love this comment hahaha
Serena is supposed to be representative of me
Its still a good show to raise awareness on how stalkers think, joe doesnt even realize hes messed up lol
Would like to hear your opinion now that the whole season's out!! :D
Anyone else cant believe they got rid of Love? I feel like they struck gold with her. I wouldn't have complained if she replaced Joe or something.
I loved seasons 1-3 because there was tension and surprises and interesting characters. This season so far seems to be lacking all of those. The reveal of who is texting Joe is disappointing and expected. Plus I personally don’t invest enough into any of these new characters to care if they died or not. I know they can’t have the same formula as the last three seasons and they need to mix it up a bit, but they’ve taken a complete different direction and it just doesn’t work for me. It’s not as suspenseful or shocking. I hope the second part changes this opinion and we actually get some surprises because at the moment it’s a little predictable. I’m with Alex, this is one of my favourite shows and I’m disappointed with the direction it’s going in.
Honestly... all the rich characters felt super unrealistic to me. Like, making almost every character an unrealistically cruel and detached sociopath sort of just made every character even worse than Joe and kept me from caring about any of them except for Kate and (a little) Phoebe. All these people went around screaming "We don't care if peasants die! F*ck democracy! Money!" and they ended up as caricatures. I swear, the words "privilege" and "rich" show up a billion times throughout this season and it's all Joe's narration (which feels like it's gotten lazier; it's less of a witty addition and more of a crutch to show us things we can figure out on our own). And maybe this is weird but I felt like Joe was way too progressive to be the psychopath that he is. It sort of reminded me of all the times Patrick Bateman made really socially conscious comments in American Psycho and then proceeded to butcher women-just one of his many faces and not at all in earnest because he doesn't care. But it seemed like Joe really meant it, and that makes it feel like the writers are trying to endear him to the audience even more, while already making him the good guy this season because he's trying to STOP the murderers and SAVE the rich people he hates even though he hates them and even though they're caricatures of WASPs. Idk, it was a really weird season. Don't get me wrong, it's still a pretty good show, but I agree with Alex that it's lazy writing to explain to us all the points of the whodunit formula and then follow them perfectly. The whole show was about keeping you guessing, and this season they tell us a formula?
Also, side note: it was super easy to figure out who the killer was. It's always the one you least suspect, right?
Alex can NEVER disappoint
I feel some repressed feelings In that teacher bit hehe
@Mr Meseeks Someone makes a compliment and you go: "behind the compliment you have some real big life issues" 🤨 Like what the heck are you doing mate? Come back on earth
@Mr Meseeks "Alex can NEVER disappoint" - that's literally the comment and then you came and replied with "well I think you hide repressed stuff behind your nice compliment, harumpf!"
How on earth do you think anyone would react to your reply? 🤨🤣
@Qui rogat, non errat(Latin."Praying never hurts") bro, read my first reply to this comment please, and then think about it
Sad story time : in France, public schools struggle finding substitute teachers so much, they don't even have to produce a diploma or certificate during the interview or have any training before being hired and teaching a class of students. I had a substitute English teacher who barely spoke French or English. Not sure it's as bad in the UK but I wouldn't be surprised.
For schools it probably is happening more nowadays due to teachers getting terrible pay, but lecturers z would have to go through intense vetting
it’s funny when Joe gives that crazy look to the person he loves when he tries to explain to them that he did it for them, everything he did was for them. 😫
Season 3 felt like a finale. 4 is just doing as they say the most.
I've been a subscriber for years now and I haven't checked in in a hot min but WOW THE ANIMATION DUDE GOOD JOB! Crazy how much you've grown as an artist!!
Season 4 is what hooked me back to the series-- Season 1 was the only interesting season for me while Season 2 and 3 felt like repeats (with some twists and turns). Season 4, in my eyes, now feels like Joe really wanting to retire and find "redemption" (at least, attempting to). *MAJOR SPOILERS for S4 Pt1 and speculation for 2* Episode 1's classroom scene shows the overarching theme: redemption. They are discussing a story about a deeply flawed and evil man whose lover died and went to heaven and now he must redeem himself so he could be with her. A student makes a point about the man not really after redemption if all he wants is the benefits and Joe brushes off the girl's comments a bit. I think that foreshadows the ending of S4 and a new development in Joe's self-perception-- how to redeem himself and why he should seek after it... or maybe simply what redemption entails for him personally. The Whodunnit mystery-formula, while having no twists as of now, is still personally enjoyable. I will admit I love whodunnits and having a literal serial killer as the detective is nice. The fan theory I ascribe to right now is that Joe is just imagining that Rhys being the killer and he is actually the true culprit in a Jekyll and Hyde fashion-twist is surely predictable but the development of Joe as a character is what I am most interested in. Will he finally see himself as a truly twisted man like all the rest of the people he's been judging or will he continue to indulge himself in delusion? My personal hope is that at the end of this season (or at least the series) is that he'll finally face the music of actions and accept the consequences as the start (or end) of his redemption.
Overall, You S4 is just fun to watch for me compared to S2 and S3.
Seasons 1-3 were very similar imo, they took a complete 180 with season 4 and I'm a fan. It follows a lot of the same themes but in a completely different environment and I thought it was refreshing. I knew after finishing people weren't gonna like it but I'm honestly not mad at it, how they finish it out with the next 5 episodes will be interesting though.
I completely agree. It would get boring very fast if it was just him obsessing over a girl over and over again. Instead, they made him the prey and seeing Joe have to be the one being stalked instead is genius
Yeah, same. I really enjoyed it.
I also did! I thought it was a great season, I wouldn't have watched it if it was just about another girl
@kaneywaney Its also simple. They didn't overdo anything it was a simple plot line that was easy enough to follow but also had enough twists to keep us from knowing the ending in episode one.
I am so glad they decided to rework the show for this season because Season 3 just felt like the most ridiculous direction you could take the concept and while it was entertaining, it was also really hard to take seriously and it made a lot of people hate even Love by the end of it
Last season I already felt like it should have ended with season 2. Season 1 was the idea for a show, which was a very good idea. Everything after that is just kinda tacked on. The stuff he gets away with just gets sillier and sillier.
I honestly never expected another season, to me season 3 wrapped up the story - I was just confused about what they were gonna do in another one.
I think this deserves a part 2 to discuss the wackadoo plot twists
It is a divergence from the other seasons, but I kinda like that Joe has to use his evil powers for good. I do want that to turn on its head in the second half though and have it get so much worse so quickly. Where he's met with the option of killing like a huge group of people all at once or letting himself get caught. it would be interesting to bring back marienne in the second half, although to have another Love character would be too much and I swear to god if nadia isn't the big bad who killed malcolm I'm going to rage.
As a person from the UK I can confirm that we in fact are paying £3000 just to live in our bathtubs and our Landlords are brilliant god I love this place.
If Joe doesn't get what he deserves by the time the show ends I'm gonna be so maaaaaad
I bet he will walk into the sunset scott free, although i agree he should be arrested
@Sigal i dont want it to end, i love when joe thinks stuff like "why does this keep happening to me?" So i can shout at him "because you wont call the police you psycho!" Lol great times
Why do you watch a show where you dislike the main character and what he does?
I like that they did something different this season. Joe has always seen himself as a good guy and he thinks all the murdering is justified or nessesary. But when other people do it, for example Love in season two, he is disgusted by them. So in this season I like that someone just as bad as Joe is calling him out and he is the one being stalked.
So I've read all three books and I'll read the fourth one when it comes out (yes, the author is making a fourth one). I've said this for a while, but the closest thing to the books was the first season. There were some differences, but they weren't intrusive. The second season is not even close to the book, neither is the third season. I've honestly just assumed they don't know what to do at this point because the book isn't out when the next season is in production.
i must be the only person who absolutely loved this first half of the season. to each their own I guess because I had so much fun watching this.
Can't watch this right now because I'm not caught up on the show, but adding it to my Water Later! If you're looking for a new show to discuss, Lockwood and Co is a really fun show that came out end of January that needs to be renewed by Netflix! It's being described as one of the best book-to-screen adaptations, and it's just great in general
Hey, Alex, now that the full season is out, please make another "You" video 🙏 the writers adressed a lot of your concerns about the first half in the second half 😂
This might sound weird but I’m just watching to see Joe suffer from Karma. Here’s to hoping his ending is like Beck’s to bring things full circle.
Totally agree
As long as he doesn't get "caught" for a crime he didn't commit. If he tracks down the blackmailer and he dies or gets caught trying to take him/her down, it would make no sense that he's smart enough to get away with those murders but not this one, and would just mean the story ends with the blackmailer just being a better version of him.
Me too! Ugh. I hate Joe so much. Book Joe is EVEN worse.
Me too!! I just want to see Joe rotting in prison for his crimes, and for all of his victims to finally get their resolution.
If this show ends with him getting away again- I would throw my remote at the wall.
I do hope they bring the PI investigating Peach‘s death as well as the cop who loved the reporter lady from season 2 back into the deal, and anyone who is able to testify against him.
I personally love all you seasons. I'm excited for part 2 on March 9th.
The show is from Joe's perspective, and we see Joe the way Joe sees Joe until the pivotal moments where we don't. I like to see it as there are three Joe's, the Joe that Joe sees which Is what we usually see, the Joe other people see which is the persona he puts up, and then the REAL Joe where we see what's in his box and see the more subconscious genuinely terrifying and disturbing individual he can be. I think a season where Joe genuinely believes himself to be the good guy, and not a bad guy trying to be better is an interesting twist. While the murder mystery is a bit cliche, I think the idea of serial killers trying to catch each other is pretty fun. The most interesting aspect to me is that the "You" of this show isn't someone Joe is enfatuated with, in fact in this season Joe ISNT enfatuated with anyone, even Kate. It sets this season apart, and seems like a natural trajectory after the events of season 3. Still prefer the other seasons so far, but who knows where I'll stand once this one is finished.
bros animation skills are expanding, I mean look at those perspectives. inspiring.
They can easily end show with two seasons without getting senseless but they still do
And we still watch
Highly highly agree I really hope the next season is the last. It’s already dragging as is
Right? Same thing every time. See girl, want her, get her, kill for her, she escapes or he kills her. Yawn.
@Ash ʕ ᴖᴥᴖ ʔ did we watch the same show
I’m just watching bc I’m invested in the story. I don’t mind the nonsense. Pen Badgley could play a fork and I’ll be sit
The season 3 finale was literally one of the best episodes. It would have been a perfect hill for the show to die on, but nooooo. We need to turn it into the next Vampire Diaries
Oh man, can’t wait to see you review the second half. (I really hope you do!)
Patiently waiting for your review of part 2 of this season 😊
Alex, do you often (or ever) get asked why all the dead characters are saying "rosebud" ? 😆
I was confused by the claim that this season was formulaic without twists until I realized it was only a review of the first half lol- episode 7 hit me like a freight train
“There are no twists”
Bro had NO IDEAAA
Maybe this is a dumb basic storyline, but I actually would've liked this season to go back to the shows roots of having Joe obsess over a girl, have her have insane chemistry with him that we feel like we're rooting for them, but then have her be a cop or her sibling be a cop and ending up investigating him which leads to his eventual downfall and when all seems like it's going perfect for him, he falls, ends up in jail or dead, the end
That would have been a pretty predictable storyline. It dosent sound like a bad idea but I don’t think people would like itn
@Amon
But then it’d just feel repetitive. Sure it’s a stronger storyline than what we got, but it wouldn’t be interesting because the show’s already done that kind of thing many times before.
Sounds very similar to dexter new blood
also if they did this they would have to make sure its planned ahead of time, as well as actually plant hints. Otherwise it'll just feel like an asspull after people bitched about it being the same thing.
but in theory its a good idea
If you like this then listen to the books on audible. They don’t follow the same storyline but they have the same Joel obsessing over women. The first season is based off of the first book and it follows it pretty similarly
Your videos always make my day, thanks so much keep up the great work😃
The writing for season 1 was so good...that's what got me hooked and now it's like the writers for Emily in Paris are writing this show and I hate it!! I guess you can't really ruin something that has already horrible for the past 2 seasons...you can only make it worse.
Probably shoulda waited until the 2nd part aired because it really made this one of the wildest seasons
This season took a turn like I didn’t expect it to go the way it did honestly
Second half of the season addresses pretty much every complaint you have about the first half, so I assume you liked the second half a lot more. Might be a good idea to post some sort of follow-up.
I'm not gonna lie, I'm enjoying Joe's dark academia outfits. I cant believe he is wearing tweed jackets and making it work. Love and Marienne deserved better though.
Nah love was a psycho
@Ahnaf Chowdhury yeah but like, so is Joe, and she didn’t go all psycho until Joe gave her reasons to. 😂 it wasn’t that hard to just be loyal and live a happy life, but because Joe is so psychotic and dissatisfied he couldn’t do that. He literally kills Love and still justified his every action afterwards, showing he is kinda worse.
@UnofficialBeauty Queen she was crazy way before he came in, Joe mostly kills people that somewhat deserves it, while love kills mostly undeserved people for her own selfish needs. He was being loyal at first, yes he did almost full-on cheat but he contained himself and didn't. Whereas Love full-on cheats on him and after he finds out, he didn't wanna be with her anymore and with someone else. He wanted a divorce first but love had other plans, he mostly just countered her tactics and killed her. Both of them don't deserve good things but love definitely deserved what she got.
@Ahnaf Chowdhury Joe rarely killed anyone who deserved it. His story is from his perspective that gives the readers the impression that they deserved it. Joe killed Beck, Elijah, whom of which didn’t really deserve to die. Even Peach, you could argue didn’t deserve to die despite her obsession with Beck. That was not Joe’s call to make. And he was not being loyal if he had intent to cheat. He literally fantasized about the cheating first 😭 Love only ever killed for Joe’s sake is what you’re not realizing. And yes, even though Joe refrained from going through with the full sexual act, they still kissed, he still cheated emotionally and physically. Love didn’t cheat until she discovered Joe did, and that Joe didn’t love her anymore. Yes, they’re both terrible people, but Joe is most definitely top tier bad.
Had he been faithful and accepted her as his better twisted half, things would have went different.
@UnofficialBeauty Queen Joe mostly killed people that deserved it like Beck's bf, his neighbour's bf, that gangster guy etc. Obviously there are people that didn't deserve it. Emotional cheating is not worse then literally cheating, he pulled himself back while she didn't. She didn't even give a single thought of talking with him before what she did, while he was willing to talk it through when she did it and not go full on killing. If your sole reason on why Joe is worse is because of emotional cheating, then Candace is the real villain.
Joe reminds me of those people I do my best to avoid because they are so depressing to be around.
i think youre gonna be surprised where part 2 goes!! remember this is only the first half of the season :')
In my opinion, this was a nice change of pace for a show that was really starting to feel like it had exhausted its concept by Season 3. Season 3 had so many bodies dropping left and right and the new characters are easily the dumbest the shows ever seen. Made it very hard to enjoy the show in an unironic way or take anything they were doing seriously. Season 4 is slightly more grounded even if the characters are still fairly wacky, they feel more consistent and grounded than in Season 3
I actually love this show so much and I think it's really great. But to each their own lol.
Can’t lie I really liked this season and honestly the jokes hit pretty well
I’m the last person to enjoy a show or movie following a formula so evidently. But somehow, I genuinely love this season. Even though they switched a totally predictable plot. Like they made the primary antagonist was pretty obvious, to me. I love that he is fixated on this opponent and not a woman and how he was able to genuinely fall in love without trying to manipulate her or becoming totally obsessed with her. I love how they are handling his duality this season! Just my opinion though 🤷🏽♀️
Totally agree! Binged it today and really enjoyed it.
can you explain how it’s predictable? I feel like I’m missing something lol
I’m actually liking this update to the formula. If it was just another obsession, it would get stale. The season so far is intriguing
I really enjoyed this season because Joe's delusion will never not be hilarious and entertaining to me💀. My boy literally just does Olympic level gymnastics to justify and validate himself and that is so funny to watch. Especailly when he is interacting witht the new killer and he cannot see how similar both of them are
I loved this season, we get to the point i think they're trying to make. It's that we are all rooting for a SERIAL KILLER WITH NO FEELINGS. The Rhys thing might have been cliche but we needed it since Joe was convincing us for the last three seasons that he's "good" but now he knows he's bad, we know.
Right? Season one was fantastic because they had a book to follow, they veered off in season 2 and mostly it was ok. Season 3 is when things started to snooze off for me, and season 4 is just a complete veer off of what made it good. I'd give anything to watch season 1 for the first time again 🥺
