    The Monkey King traveled across half the world to discover the secret to immortality and sure enough, he did! Along with several other magic powers and abilities. But while the Monkey King might have become immortal, that wasn't good enough for him. The Monkey King wouldn't be satisfied until he had ALL of the immortality. It turns out, that kind of thing stacks. And boy howdy, will it stack along with all of the trouble Monkey King was causing.

      Swords, arrows, spears, chains, guillotines, heavenly fire, divine thunder - they tried everything. They even tried throwing him into Laozu's furnace that he used to make those immortality pills - a furnace so hot that it would reduce anything in creation to its purest, basest form. And they didn't just throw him in there - they threw him in and LEFT HIM int there, for FORTY NINE DAYS.
      But no. It wasn't hot enough. All it did was temper his body into a tougher state - curing his eyes into a rapturous golden color and making him EVEN MORE IMMORTAL.

      Not really a "show off". That seems mistranslated. The Monkey King is supposed to be a legendary nuisance and menace. While never acting from evil intent, his high-jinks oft disturb the order and balance of existence, causing a lot of messes for the other agents of heaven to clean up.
      It would be 500 years before Wukong would be freed by Xuanzang, to aid him in his Journey to the West, who will eventually teach Wukong humility, patience, and restraint. With a little help from Guanyin's Cursed Golden Circlet of Consequential Cranium Constriction +20, of course.

    The many versions of the story I've heard, the pillar from the ocean palace Sun Wu Kong took is the actual pillar holding up the ocean. Taking that pillar caused major issues. The ocean was ravaged by deadly storms and coastal areas by tsunami. They had to quickly make a silver pillar replacement to stabilize the world's oceans.
    Also, in all version of the story I've heard, the mountain the Buddha trapped Wu Kong never existed until the Buddha slapped Wu Kong back down to Earth. The mountain was formed from the Buddha's actual hand in this epic slap. Because of the shape, people call that mountain the Five Fingers Mountain (in Chinese thumbs and fingers are not distinguished).

Like how the Monkey King went to heaven looking to be made a god, so the gods tried to trick him into being their stable boy which lead to MK starting a stampede, fleeing to back to earth and demanding to be called great sage equal to heaven. Kind of an important plot point.

  • @alanepithet2931
    @alanepithet2931 Před 4 lety +3

    There's a lot of cool (and important) things missing from this story.
    Like how the original job Heaven offered the Monkey King was basically 'stable boy' and when he found out, Sun Wukong stormed out in a huff and declared himself Great Sage Equal to Heaven.
    Or how the reason the Dragon was willing to part with his treasure was that the Dragon King was literally terrified of Sun Wukong.
    Honestly, this fails to capture one his most important character traits: Impulsiveness. The Handsome Monkey King does not think things through. He eats all the peaches of immortality because he was hungry. He goes to the party because he thinks it'll be fun. He drinks most of the wine at the party because he can and he's drunk. He's not greedy, he's just impulsive.
    And it's worth noting that Sun Wukong couldn't escape the mountain explicitly because of a powerful seal. At that point he could literally bench press the thing without the seal on him, or transform to a literally mountainous size. The only reason he gets out is basically because the Buddha needs him for a job.

    • @ReikaSensei
      @ReikaSensei Před 4 lety

      It's nice to see another take on it, but I have to admit I prefer Red's take on it much better. Unfortunately I think it takes a long time for her to make each episode, so we have to be patient until the next one. It's so good though and I know she's sourcing her material from not just the unabridged version of the book (the pile of 4 volumes she had in the screenshot in the first ep), but also her love from her childhood, so it's worth the wait.
      But like also, I'm a huge Journey to the West fan and read the unabridged version myself for fun when I was younger and own it because I'm a nerd. My grandfather also had a collection of a bunch of Chinese classic novels in Chinese and I took that one along with my other favorite novel Fengshen Yanyi. I'm not really literate in Chinese, but I use it to reference with the unabridged version and know enough characters to fumble my way around the comparison. I also watch several TV show, animations, and just general depictions of the tale and I can be super picky about Monkey portrayals because some people don't get it right. EC's is actually passable in that at there might be one or two details that I think are a little funky, but overall it's okay because they have a decent narrative and depiction of Monkey's personality so far.
      OSP's though is excellent and it's because she knows the source material and the allegory and symbolism so well. There's only one other version that I love just as much and it's a mid-90s Hong Kong drama starring Dicky Cheung Wai Kin. That role made him famous though and it was so good and on point for Monkey's personality, but the actor had a falling out with the production company and they got a different person to play him for the second season. Dicky was a producer on the first season as well, so he was able to like make sure the story beats stuck to the heart of the novel even if they made some changes for comedic effect. When Benny took over for season 2, he was too soft and not as impetuous and I think some of the producers were trying to make a more modern spin that also turned it into a kind of travesty because they tried to write in romantic overtones into it, which is wrong. A) It's a Buddhist story and Buddhist monks are those who have left the family and thus don't have relationships, B) Monkey literally says in the book in the first quarter of the novel to one demon lady family trying to pull the wool over their eyes and also trying to get them to marry them that he would be a horrible husband and doesn't know much about romance, C) it takes away from Monkey's impetuous nature and the arc of his part of the allegory. I actually get really pissed and drop series when I see them try to throw romance into Monkey's life because it means the creators missed the point of the story. So that second season I hate, and then also a early 2000s short series where Dicky came back to play him but they decided to give him a romance with the Bone Demon for some reason so I dropped that after one episode, and then this one Japanese one where they tried to make Monkey into a horny teenager. Hate all of those, but also love the Gensoumaden Saiyuki anime even though they screwed with a whole lot of the story because they aren't trying to tell the actual story and the character relationships and personalities are relatively the same even though Hakkai and Gojyo's are switched and Sanzo smokes and has a gun.

Then when he sees the giant pillar (which is holding down part of the ocean) and starts waving it around the dragon doesn't ask him to leave because he's annoyed, but rather because he's scared shit-less of this monkey swinging something too heavy for even him and his siblings combined to lift, likes its nothing.
