  • I occasionally have to flatten large slabs of wood and so I have put together a jig that I can construct, dismantle and store quickly. There are many designs for slab flattening jigs available but most of them require a backing board. This takes up space. The steel channels that are used are stored under my storage cabinets. The simple slides are made from left over scraps of flooring laminate. This is remarkably strong and glides easily over the steel channel.
The steel channel is widely available in the UK and is relatively inexpensive. I use it for a range of different jigs that can be built and dismantled quickly. It is very versatile and quite strong. I get mine from Direct Channel Support Systems Ltd (directchannel..... It is similar to the brand-leading Unistrut but much less expensive.
The jig shown here can be used for slabs up to 1m x 2m (36 inches x 72 inches) but this can be made larger or smaller depending on the project.
I use a Trend router and TREND 37/12X1/2TC TENON CUTTER 50.8MM DIA X 20MM CUT. It leaves a remarkably smooth finish that can be sanded to an excellent finish in just a few minutes.
